The National Society of Film Critics gathered in New York to vote on the best of the year. Turns out, their choices? A lot like everyone else’s choices. There is a uniformity to the critics awards this year that is kind of bizarre. I’ve never understood why the consensus is the consensus, but some years it’s more extreme than others. Part of it is that the same people vote across different groups. But part is it has to be human nature – we just want to belong! Either way, this is how it went down:
Best Picture: Moonlight
Best Director: Barry Jenkins, Moonlight
Screenplay: Manchester by the Sea
Best Actor: Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea
Best Actress: Isabelle Huppert, Elle
Best Supporting Actress: Michelle Williams, Manchester by the Sea
Best Supporting Actor: Mahershala Ali, Moonlight
Cinematography: Moonlight
Foreign Language Film: Toni Erdmann
Non-Fiction Film: O.J.: Made in America
