MrScreenAddict Just in case there’s a write-in winner, I guess. 😛 Christophe Cool! thatpj My predictions are going to look like I’m in La La Land. Wayman Wong I forget who coined this phrase, but it looks like it could be a ”La La Land’-slide … MrExcellent I have a hunch that LLL is going to lose Actor, Screenplay, Art Direction, Costumes, and Sound Editing. Pollyanna1972 When is the deadline for entering? Gustavo Dunno about Best Actor. To me, it’s a toss up. I used to think the idea of Denzel winning a third was ludicrous, but it obviously isn’t. He’s one of the most revered actors working today, more prolific and popular than Daniel Day-Lewis. No reason to doubt his chances, especially with the Oscars So White hashtag in the minds of liberal AMPAS voters. But Affleck won basically everything except SAG. (As a matter of opinion, I think Washington’s overbearing* in the movie, yet more interesting and able than mopey* Affleck). * Yes, I do realize Washington’s character is supposed to be overbearing, and Affleck’s is supposed to be mopey Picture: La La Land Director: Damien Chazelle Actor: Denzel Washington Actress: Emma Stone Supp. Actor: Mahershala Ali Supp. Actress: Viola Davis O. Bryce Forestieri Already did. While VENICE was going on! Getting all kinds of credit for it now. Christophe Congratulations! If I win the book on ‘La La Land’ (I won’t!), I want it to be sent to you so you can show the whole world, how much you love it! Brenda Frawley Going out on a limb and predicting Ryan Gosling to do an Adrien Brody as he gets swept up in La La Land love. It would be nice this year to have at least one surprise winner – the Oscars have become a smidge too predictable in recent years. Li The first confessions is out: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2017/02/01/confessions-of-an-oscar-voter-la-la-land-is-overrated-and-no-more-meryl-streep.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+thedailybeast%2Farticles+%28The+Daily+Beast+-+Latest+Articles%29&utm_content=Netvibes Koleś Dayum, it just occured to me that when Viola wins she’s just a Grammy away from an EGOT. I say Denzel wins. APMAS has never chosen a BAFTA winner (most likely Affleck) over a SAG winner. Denzel is liked. He directed it. It’s his passion project. Affleck in general is getting mostly lukewarm reactions from his public appearances, at least that’s my impression. The BP nod for Fences helps, a lot. The question is, are they going to go all the way and give a posthumous Oscar to August Wilson? IMHO that’s very possible. Moonlight looks like the obvious choice here, but right now it’s facing some stiff competition. A couple of weeks ago I’d say there’s no way Arrival can loose, that’s until Moonlight became an Adapted Screenplay contender. After the SAG win Hidden Figures also became a player. Fences also counts because of the fact that there is an opportunity to award a famous playwright 12 years after his demise and that’s very tempting. The WGA will tell us more, but not a lot, mostly because the obvious choice Moonlight is somewhere else. I have a sneaky feeling that Fences may pull off a surprise win over here. MEM totally agree about Fences winning Adapted Screenplay. I’d love to see it take Best Supp Actress, Lead Actor and BAS. How can it not!? Those scenes were bonafide master class because of the script and powerhouse performances. MEM Denzel and Viola, and August Wilson (posthumous) all take home Oscars! All well-deserved. It was the best acting of any movie in the last 15 years! It’s hard to see Viola and Denzel win without the script going with them, IMHO. Bryce Forestieri I’m not looking for material gains. Only recognition. And I’d rather read a book on The Room (Wiseau ’03) John Not going to vote in the contest jussssttttt yet. But I’m not thinking FULL sweep for La La Land at this point. Currently predicting LLL for 8. Feels low. But I don’t think that AMPAS wants to go for a sweep since that what the Globes did and it hasn’t really been considered a wonderful thing in retrospect. 8 wins: -Picture (seems inevtiable at this point) -Director (ditto) -Actress (unless they go Portman or Huppert, but Elle may not be loved) -Editing (I don’t see a viable 2nd place broad competitor) -Cinematography (ditto) -Production Design (ditto) -Sound Mixing (they love Musicals here) -Score (a-duh) Misses: -I see it missing Gosling (though, a win for him would be a fun Mark Rylance shocker) -Original Screenplay (AMPAS might go higher-brow and give something to Manchester, especially if they also go for Denzel) -Costumes (could go to Jackie) -Sound Editing (I feel like they’ll want to give Hacksaw something) -Songs (maybe Moana wins in a split between both heralded songs; unless consensus coalesces around City of Stars) Idle Time I see 8 is the LLL’s ceiling. thatpj Predicting 8 reminds me of the logic of predicting it for like 4 or 5 at Globes because Globes “spread the wealth”. Sweepers gonna sweep. MrScreenAddict And people said it wouldn’t tie the record for most nominations, either. Idk why people keep underestimating LLL’s potential at this point. It’s clear that it’s going to do tremendously well. I see 10 or 11 wins for it, easy. thatpj Outliers are gonna outlie Idle Time I’m not underestimating LLL. Winning 8 is huge these days. With expanded BPs and screeners availability, sweeps are unlikely. I’m being realistic. Predicting sweeps is living in La La Land. Idle Time GG is a bunch of ass-kissing whores. Derek Richmond I’m hoping Arrival takes editing just so it gets SOMETHING! And it probably is it’s strongest bet. But it could go to either and I’d be ok with it… I’d prefer HoHW but that’s just because it’s my fav. Derek Richmond I’m thinking 9-10… I’m a fan of it, but it definitely doesn’t deserve to tie or break the record. It SHOULD miss Actor, Costumes, SE, Screenplay and possibly editing. All those would make it 8. Derek Richmond Which most of them do. Lolz. Pollyanna1972 That person just sounds like he or she wants to bitch about everything. Derek Richmond I definitely think that if Denzel wins his 3rd for Fences it largely in part to the fact that it’s HIS movie all around. It’d be a way of giving him BA, BD and BP without really needing to do so because his 3 timers club membership would be worth as much or more than actually winning those other prizes. Idle Time Except that Fences the screenplay has the stigma of being a carbon copy of the original play. And Wilson had won the Tony and Pulitzer for that achievement already. Idle Time The most interesting thing about this person is that he/she is an actor yet not loving LLL. Koleś Editing I think is a done deal and LLL gets it. Although I would love if Arrival would win this. However I do believe that Cinematography can go a lot of ways. In fact only Prieto seems to be te only one who’ll surely not win. Laxton being nominated may not be exacly a shocker, because he did get nominated by the ASC, but the Oscars could have gone so many other ways (Hacksaw, Jackie) and Moonlight was the most vulnerable. But they did stick with it, so I guess that says something. Young and Fraser were both nominated for the first time, but certainly not the last. They’ve been delivering wonderful work over the years and represent the new and tallented new wave of cinematographers. I actually do believe either Fraser or Young can win here. Of course LLL is the frontrunner and will likely get it, especially if it wins the ASC, but if it doesn’t… well, it’s still the frontrunner :), but something might happen over here, I can feel it. Joseoh I see LLL getting Picture Director Actress Production design Cinematography Film editing Original score Original song-city of stars Claudiu Cristian Dobre It’s not losing song, in my opinion. I like your reasoning for the other misses, though. Mike Williams Mendes Win Viola wins I hope she just walks up and says Thank You.. her speeches use to be inspirational and meaningful but now it’s to the point where you know she’s gonna get all dramatic and make it this “moment” and basically make it an overstatement on something. You don’t always have to prove you are class and thoughtful act and that you can act. By now we know the storyline and frankly its predictable, boring and annoying. She is a fantastic actress but this role was not a stretch for her. Also Jonalle Monae should be nominated of Octavia (played this part before and did it well but OW.) I would had nominated Kevin Costner, Taraji, and Jonalle even Kirsten Dunst (who should had been nominated for Midnight Special) before nominating Octavia in that cast. Dominik I sense potential for a minor surprise in the Best Actress-category and go with Isabelle Huppert. Would be great to see “I am not your negro” winning Best Doc, but I´m pretty sure OJ has this in the bag. Crossing my fingers for Toni Erdmann! Jack Mahanes I don’t think Isabelle Huppert will win. Her film was snubbed in the Foreign Language Film category, that didn’t help Marion Cotillard two years ago. No one has ever won a lead acting Oscar without a SAG nomination. Huppert also was snubbed at the BAFTA. Just ask Stallone who last year won a Golden Globe but didn’t receive a SAG or BAFTA nomination, and we all know how that turned out. I believe Emma Stone has it all sealed up, and the BAFTA will be the cherry on top tomorrow going into the Oscars. Dominik It´s a risky pick, for sure. Emma Stone will probably win, but I have a gut feeling they might award Huppert instead. Cotillard had won before and her role in “Deux jours, une nuit” wasn´t a critics sensation like Huppert´s performance. And Stallone… well, he has never been considered a great actor, has he? If you take a look at Huppert´s body of work it feels strange that she has not a couple of Oscars in her bag (the only reason for that is that she played in foreign language films). joris-karl huysmans What’s the deadline? I’ll be seeing the three Oscar shorts programs and Toni Erdmann (finally!) this weekend. I’m tempted to predict Ryan Gosling for Best Actor – ain’t agin’ it but I’d vote for Casey. I’m also predicting La La Land and Hidden Figures for the Screenplay awards. – to the sound of great gnashing of teeth. So, will they go GG and all-in for La La Land, or BAFTA and spread the wealth? Aku Max whatever you predict, don’t forget Ryan Gosling is going to win… Aaron B I mostly agree, but I’m not sure it gets editing. Spencer Shannon NOT GETTING PREDIX SENT BACK TO INBOX??? CherryValance I need to be reminded of the changes to the Academy membership. It was how many new people and are they definitely from diverse backgrounds or was that just what people assumed would happen? Huh You sure?
