Oscar Winner Jonathan Demme Dies

Indiewire reported this morning that the Oscar winning director of Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, Stop Making Sense, Married to the Mob and other beloved films has died of cancer and other complications. Demme’s work on Silence remains unmatched, though it birthed many genres of true crime on film and television. Demme’s extraordinary work in Silence is remembered by his style of having his characters talk directly to the camera so that one feels fully immersed. It remains one of the best films to ever win Best Picture, winning all of the top Oscars – Picture, Actor, Actress, Director and Screenplay. He will be missed.

I loved the film so much I saw it twice in the theater, then told my friends about it and brought them to see it for a third time that same night. It was the first time that the Oscars had any impact on me because they gave the prize to the film I thought deserved it. Demme was a rare talent…
