HBO drops the latest look at the third season of the much loved and maligned limited series.
True Detective has had a weird trajectory. The much heralded first season, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, was nominated for 13 Primetime Emmys, and it took home 5, including Directing for Cary Joji Fukanaga. The second…well…it had a weird orgy, shitty dialogue, and Vince Vaughn wandering through a desert being followed by hungry birds. It was even worse than it sounds, and everyone expected HBO to drop the show after it became Twitter’s punching bag. With Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali leading the third season, it does appear the show will make a return to its gritty, compelling roots.
The latest trailer does reveal that Ali’s Detective Wayne Hays is haunted by his final case when two boys in the Ozarks seemingly disappear without a trace. Carmen Ejogo, always a welcome presence, plays a schoolteacher alongside Ali, and Mamie Gummer is in full Amy Ryan Gone Baby Gone mode as a mother of one of the missing boys. Stephen Dorff plays Hays’ partner, Roland West.
The series was written by Nic Pizzolatto and directed by Jeremy Saulnier and Daniel Sackheim. The third season debuts on January 13, 2019 on HBO.
