Quincy Jones who has made his mark today outside the TCL Chinese Theatre and I was there to witness Hollywood history.
Jones was honored today in front of his family and friends that included his daughter, Rashida Jones, Snoop Dogg, Usher, Dr. Dre, and basketball superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Snoop Dogg was first on the podium to celebrate Jones joking that this was usually the time Quincy was rolling into bed after partying and thanked everyone for “being on time for Uncle Quincy.” He called him a mentor, a friend and an inspiration.
Singer and songwriter Usher called Jones, “A true teacher and a truth seeker.” Of Jones legacy and influence on his own career, Usher said, “You tore that shit down. There are no barriers. I wouldn’t be the philanthropist that I am today if not for you.” He went on to say how Jones had stressed the importance of family with him and had learned to do everything with love because of Jones.
Before Quincy himself stepped up to the podium, daughter Rashida who filmed the documentary Quincy called her father “A true force of nature who put his stamp on every decade.” His career spans over six decades and the producer, composer, film producer, musician has won over 27 Grammy Awards.
Jones received a standing ovation as he gave his speech. He became the first composer to receive hand and footprints at the historic Chinese Theatre. He told the crowd that at age 15 he would skip school, pay 11 cents to buy a movie ticket and dream about composing film scores.
