More relevant stats – love it! First Man finally makes an appearance (as do The Favourite and BlacKkKlansman), and a consistent one, even though not in any of the major non-acting categories, unfortunately… At least the score got in. It would have been criminal to leave it out, as far as I’m concerned. I also like that Constance Wu was nominated, of the more unexpected ones (and of the performances I’ve seen, which definitely aren’t a majority, even among these nominees). ASIB getting in for screenplay should be a good thing for its BP chances. The editing nomination here isn’t particularly linked to winning BP, but indirectly it’s still a clue about what is likely to be nominated by AMPAS, so Green Book missing that one certainly is no achievement…
On the other hand, all of this love for A Quiet Place is not my favorite thing in the world, but there’s nothing to be done about it. 🙂 Hopefully (from my perspective), the Academy sticks to its biases on this one.
Does Roma’s International Film category count as a BP mention?
And last but not least, the early stats table (so far, based on the NBR top 10 – well, 11 – and the directing and screenplay nominees here) finally takes some shape – and, unsurprisingly, it’s precisely the four movies seen as the top favorites that have not missed anywhere statistically significant, and thus lead the way:
A Star Is Born 4 3
Green Book 4 3
If Beale Street Could Talk 4 3
Roma 4 3
A Quiet Place 3 2
BlacKkKlansman 3 2
Can You Ever Forgive Me? 3 2
Eighth Grade 3 2
First Reformed 3 2
The Favourite 3 2
Leave No Trace 2 1
The Death of Stalin 2 1
Black Panther 1 1
Mary Poppins Returns 1 1
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs 1 1
(The first number is points, the second is number of key nominations received out of the total possible 3. Beyond those, the order is alphabetical…)
What probably helps A Quiet Place a lot (and I must admit that I’m not a fan either) is that Paramount is pushing only A Quiet Place for any consideration, meaning they’ll be aggressive in their campaign for it
That explains a lot of it… Thanks!
Yeah, I found the second half of that movie mind-numbingly predictable… Beyond that, it was fine, even interesting, in many ways. But that aspect ruined it completely for me. Kind of like Alien: Covenant.
Jazz do you know when the actual ceremony takes place?
I just viewed Support the Girls and honestly gotta say, I had a smile on my face throughout the movie. And Regina Hall helped put it there.
I gotta ask, did anyone else here even see Nico 1988? I feel like I’m one of the only people on Earth who did. Good for Trine Dyrholm, though, she deserved it.
Pissed at the total lack of Blindspotting or Suspiria love, however.
Glad to see Collette nominated by Detroit. Up yours Satellite. All those slots and no room for the best performance of the year.
Watched it again last night. Every flipping scene is amazing.
Lot of love around here for the performance.
Wish Sasha and this site would push her more, I think more coverage would really help. Sasha or Ryan, did you not really love that performance?
Yesss Toni Collette is in for Detroit yesss just when the satellites pissed me off lol. We just need that globe nom next week and we are in

Seriously, no ASIB in the BP top 7 at all?
Is this a joke ? Where is Charlize Theron ? Her performance in Tully was heartbreaking fierce one of the best of the year, She should be in the top front they put Constance Wu , Trine Dryholm…. im sorry but incomparable to Theron performance, Satellite Awards are known to be a joke awards now they really confirm it.

Vice rises !
I love that Jesse Plemons nomination. Game Night is one of my favorite films this year.
Is Best Picture the only nomination for A Quiet Place?
Poor Jesse Plemons, he’s so good at acting that I can’t get myself to like him since his role on Breaking Bad.
Wow, First Reformed (2017) did well again (and McCarthy finally shows up), while:
– A Star Is Born (2018) missed Picture
– Green Book missed Director and Actor
– The Favourite missed Picture and Director
– If Beale Street Could Talk missed Picture, Director, and Screenplay
You had six comedy or musical actress nominations and you still left off Charlize Theron for “Tully”? Ya blew it.
While everybody is wetting themselves over what the critics are doing, you might want to pay attention to what the industry is saying after last night’s premiere of Mary Poppins Returns. You know, those people who actually vote for the Oscars, But then again, when have the Oscars ever mattered as much as what the Detroit critics and Satellite awards folk ever said. Silly me. Never mind, carry on.
What did they say?
https://ew.com/movies/2018/11/30/mary-poppins-returns-reactions/
You do know that these are critics/Oscar pundit-types, not Oscar voters, right?
In what universe is Eighth Grade a comedy?
The so-called supercluster of galaxies that
contains the Milky Way has been named “Laniakea,” which means “immense
heaven” in Hawaiian.
Strange that they nominate Hereditary in Best Drama, yet snub Toni Collette in a six strong Drama Actress lineup.
Yes how did this happen?
She’s far better than the film.
That snub hurts.
I keep hoping for Alex Wolff to appear somewhere too.
Now that Hawke is tracking to actually hit Best Actor, could that propel him into Adapted Screenplay for Blaze?
No.
No, and it shouldn’t. Director would be another matter, I actually found his direction quite accomplished in that.
“The Death of Stalin”? Now that’s a very good choice for Adapted screenplay. It’s so underrated.
It should be nominated (Oscar-wise) for:
Picture
Director (Armando Iannucci)
Supporting Actor (Simon Russell Beale)
Adapted Screenplay
Film Editing
Production Design
Costume
Score
Cinematography
Make Up
So far, it’s my number one film of the year. And I’ve already seen BKKKM and ASiB
It should get much more recognition that it has so far. But it definitely should be a major contender in screenplay.
there’s a precedent. Iannucci’s previous was nominated in the category, “In the Loop”. Also, my #1 film of 2009
Not only nominated but it should possibly win too? I don’t think it will because films have to strong across the board, especially in the major categories. But it should definitely be nominated, at least.
it has a snowball in hell’s chances to win anywhere. Too little seen and in competition with A Star is Born and BlackKklansman… no way it can win. Even if it should
Simon Russell Beale is so good.
I think “First Reformed” could be this year’s CMBYN. It could dominate its own screenplay category (original) and wins most critics awards for lead actor. I think it might be stronger and could get BD. The competition is falling apart at the moment. I only have three likely BD nominees: Cuaron, Jenkins and Cooper. I know Phantom doesn’t think Cooper will get BD but I think he might be underestimating how popular he is. He could miss but I wouldn’t predict that until he misses some major precursors.
The thing about Call Me by Your Name’s screenplay win was that Oscar-wise that category was a wasteland last year, First Reformed is in a notably more competetive category
True but it could still win majority of critics awards. And I going to the fact it could also win majority of lead actor too. Plus Schrader is similar to Ivory and could win late in his career. That’s how it feels at the moment but it’s still early and it’s critics awards.
Beale is the one in barren land this year and seems to have Adapted wrapped up.
Unless they want to give Spike Lee that Oscar…
Big awards are not just given. They will go for the strongest film. And Blackkklansman doesn’t even seem likely to be nominated. I don’t even remember the last a non-BP film won the screenplay. It’s still early days but Beale looks very strong and Blakkkalansmans doesn’t seem strong enough.
Unless surprise, BKKKM is an almost sure-fire nominee at Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay and Film Editing. Likely that Adam Driver gets the nom, also noms are possible for Costume, Make Up and Cinematography. It will depend on campaigning, but I still have it as the most likely winner when all is said and done… but we need something more than 7 Satellite noms to see it happening. The key BKKKM moments are going to be:
DGA – needs a nom here, and a win
PGA – needs to be nom’d. This is ASiB to lose, though.
GG – needs Director, Screenplay noms and a win in Director. Picture and some acting (Washington and / or Driver) would show it is a powerhouse for the win.
SAG – needs at least one of these 2 noms: Driver and Ensemble… if possible an Ensemble win, which is possible but not that likely
Be represented in the guilds in editing, costume, cinematography, art direction, make up, etc.
With that combo, I think BKKKM would arrive to Oscar night as a possible, viable winner. If it arrives with DGA + GG Director + PGA or SAG Ensemble, I’d say is unbeatable BP wise or at least is winning director and then losing BP to A Star is Born or Green Book
It could be but I am going on how it is positioned at the moment. GG could revive. I feel it needs something big to establish it as a serious contender. We shall see.
They do not always (or even typically) go for the “strongest film” in a category.
A win (or even a nomination) is determined by a variety of factors beyond quality: momentum, narrative, etc.
Those Detroit nominations are… confusing. They’re the first to bring Vice into the conversation, giving it Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, Screenplay, Ensemble. They shower ASIB with Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Breakthrough, Music. The Favourite has a solid showing with Actress, Supporting Actress x2, Screenplay, Ensemble. Yet they all miss out on BP in favor of A Quiet Place, which isn’t singled out anywhere else?? If it was one of the five best movies of the year, you’d think it would have one of the five best… something else. Directing? Performances? Writing? Ensembles? What exactly was it best in?
I think Best Director for Krasinski would have been a good call. The movie is fantastic and it’s very much down to how he directed it. I’m still happy the movie got a big mention.
Early critics awards only confirm things but never rule out anything. The biggest confirmation we have so far is that “First Reformed” is a big player and could win two awards, Original screenplay and lead actor. I said it was a big player and it might sweep screenplay and lead actor.
since the reviews flooded, I also thought “First Reformed” had everything to be the indie at the Oscar night.
I think Beale is stronger and much more up the Academy’s street but it is certainly a hit with the critics. That will push into a strong contender for screenplay and lead actor wins.
I think there’s room for both films at Best Picture and even at Best Director
I think so. I expect both of them to hit big and win at least one award if not multiple awards. Beale is stronger because it has tight grip on supporting actress and Adapted screenplay while Jenkins is big contender to win BD, after Cuaron and possibly as a pay for missing out last time for “Moonlight”. FR looks strong in Original and lead actor but it faces sterner tests than Beale.
For me those nominees actually express really well what I’m having trouble with this season: I look at the big contenders that I’ve seen and I think for example: “I can really get behind First Man’s score” or “I like the editing of BlacKkKlansman”, I can pick individual elements as noteworthy but as far as championing these movies for picture, I feel a little weird about doing it and instead root for these movies that were never even close (not necessarily the ones named here but still similar types of films). And this type of attitude is in my opinion being presented here as well
Yeah, really bizarre…
Reminds one of when the Academy thought Selma was one of the best movies of the year solely because of the song at the end… 🙂 (For me, and I imagine most others, it’s one of the best that year for many other reasons.)
Vice will be the Joy of this season, poor Adams.
It will be interesting to see who wins. The Satellites disagree with the Academy more often than not.
I don’t like these nominations as they seem pretty lame and not very adventurous. There is nothing which grabs the headline as a pointer. Disappointing!
WOW. The Satellites are actually respectable this year. And they kept every category to a tight six.
well they nominated 18 best pictures….
BREAKDOWN OF MAJOR NOMINATION LEADERS

ASIB got 11 nods, right? – not 9…
I’d say the films with Picture+Director+Acting+Editing noms are now locks for the Best Picture nomination at the Oscars: A Star is Born, Roma, If Beale Street could talk and BlackKklansman… next in line would be The Favourite (missed editing), First Man (missed director), Green Book (missed editing) and Widows. For the Best Picture win I would narrow more, looking at who has ALSO screenplay nom here… A Star is Born, Roma, If Beale Street could talk and BlackKklansman all check that one, too… out of the rest, The Favourite and Green Book also check that condition. So the race after the satellites changes to…
1. A Star is Born
2. Roma
3. If Beale Street could talk
4. BlackKklansman
5. The Favourite
6. Green Book
7. First Man
8. Widows
which makes pretty common sense to me… Bohemian Rhapsody was a no show beyond Malek, so I think it’s out. Mary Poppins Returns and Black Panther needed a stronger showing in main cathegories (no acting for BP I think it confirms it won’t have enough support, it doesn’t even get the adapted screenplay nom!) and I would say for a 9th position, it’s a fight between First Reformed and Eight Grade… which I would position over First Man and Widows… so, to me, these are the top 10 contenders
* denotes potential Best Picture winner
1. A Star is Born (locked) *
2. Roma (locked)
3. If Beale Street could talk (semi-locked) *
4. BlackKklansman (semi-locked) *
5. The Favourite (semi-locked) *
6. Green Book (semi-locked) *
7. First Reformed (likely)
8. Eight Grade (possible)
9. First Man (possible) *
10. Widows (longshot)
then,
11. Black Panther
12. Mary Poppins Returns
13. Can you ever forgive me?
14. Boy, erased
15. Mary, Queen of Scots
… now waiting for more critics and HFPA to speak out, then the guilds.
Question- has any director been nominated for picture, director, cinematography and editing before? I mean for Oscars.
Don’t mistake my question for taking the satellites seriously.
How can you nominate Hereditary without nominating Collette?
Wow this much nominees and they can only give adapted screenplay for The Death of Stalin. And not even 1 for Paddington.
So, BlackKklansman makes its first appearance with 7 noms, looking strong. The Satellites try to mirror the Globes who try to mirror the Oscars… if you want your film to compete strongly for the Best Picture Oscar, you have to look strong here… so anything with over 5 noms here, including Best Picture is a Best Picture threat to the Oscars… we’ve narrowed the scope a bit… who’s missing?
Whenever I see nominations from this group, I’m reminded of one thing:
YOU GET A CAR!
AND YOU GET A CAR!
AND YOU GET A CAR!
AND YOU GET A CAR!
(repeat as needed)
Yay! Everyone wins!
Yeah, wake me when the Globes / SAG are ready to announce.
Solid list of nominees. I especially love watching Viola Davis and Ben Foster on this list, I truly hope both of them can make it to The Oscars. First Man’s nominations fill me with joy as well… Where is Charlize though? She deserves everything for Tully.. Constance Wu? For real?
Always makes me smile to see Satellite award noms.
holy fuck like..What did they just copy the contender list from this site and pick a stopping point and call those “nominations”? They do this every year. Let’s not forget the year where they had twelve nominations in like one category. But I guess now to compensate they shrink it to six but make two different categories lol. Moving on…LA should be next right.. or is it DC?
Next week is:
Monday 12/3 – DC Critics Awards
Tuesday 12/4 – AFI Honorees
Thursday 12/6 – Golden Globe noms
Safe to assume Vice wasn’t seen?
Would say so
By my quick count:
A Star Is Born: 11
The Favourite: 9
Roma: 8
If Beale Street Could Talk: 7
BlacKKKlansman: 7
Black Panther: 7
First Man: 7
Mary Poppins Returns: 6
Green Book: 5
Boy Erased: 4
Leave No Trace: 3
First Reformed: 3
Can You Ever Forgive Me?: 3
I’m not looking forward to the day when Peter Farrelly gets a Best Director nomination, and Spike Lee doesn’t.
Don’t worry, neither of them will.
That’s the frustrating thing. While I think that BlacKkKlansman will under perform, Spike Lee does deserve a nomination for it. But, it’s a packed year without a front runner so it’s hard to say exactly who will get in.
Which would be your predicted five?
Cuaron
Cooper
Jenkins
Lanthimos
Would you include Chazelle or Schrader?
I would include McKay before either of them. I could still see Vice picking up a late surge like The Big Short. That movie didn’t really pop up anywhere until the Golden Globes and then it very nearly stole BP and earned McKay two noms and a win.
That director’s list looks like the ones vying for the five Oscar slots as well. I have a feeling we may see a surprise with Marshall for Mary Poppins Returns down the line so maybe add him to the list. So which two don’t make the cut at the Oscars?
Easy, Lee and Farrelly.
Psst! Marshall will get nominated and it will be much deserved.
At the Globes, almost assuredly. Oscar is another matter.
I think I’m most surprised that Ronan missed here.
Actually, one of their better lists ever. Usually they are a hot HOT mess. These list look pretty thorough to me.
Where is Charlize Theron in Tully one of the best bold performance of the year ? Such a shame
These are such a mess. So many categories and so many nominees per category, it’s basically anyone who’s even in the conversation for Oscar. Absolutely useless in terms of prognostication.
And yet they still managed to snub Chazelle.
I wouldn’t say that. Ronan missed. Julia Roberts missed. Toni Collette missed. All of them have been bandied about conversations.
Yay Rosamund! Finally she gets some recognition.
Exactly–such an underrated actress.
