Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

I think the important question for this: “If Roma wins foreign, will people also want to vote for it in best picture” idea is that if someone chooses to vote for something else than Roma in best picture because of that, will they rank it second. Thus votes would pack for it in second place and it could gain from more rounds and actually be helped by the preferential ballot
And I agree with Alex and aroncido, this was a phenomenal podcast
Leaving aside our differing opinions on The Favourite (I absolutely love it) I hadn’t realised how similar the films I mention every year are to Sasha! The English language non documentary films I always end up mentioning are first reformed, first man and eighth grade (particularly eighth grade).
And the way Sasha talks about Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book and A Star is Born as these aren’t exceptional movies, they are to differing extents fun little movies that have no place being here but that people can love for their own reasons. As I say the only place that I really differ here is The Favourite which is my favourite of the picture nominees (but it’s still below first man and particularly eighth grade for me and first reformed and hereditary and Shoplifters and Free Solo and Happy As Lazzaro).
In saying that you talked about the times when the Oscars were the intersection of v Critics and audiences which left me thinking what are the films where critics and audiences intersect this year:
A Star is Born and Black Panther are the obvious 2, A Quiet Place would make sense, maybe rounded out with Incredibles 2 and MI Fallout. Maybe Spiderverse would make that list? I leave out Bohemian Rhapsody and Infinity war because the critical reviews weren’t really good enough (infinity war was decent but not amazing)… To be fair that would leave a good image of where cinema is these days but it certainly wouldn’t be a list of the best films of the year.
Regardless great podcast! I have to second what Aroncido said this was a really great discussion of this year in film and the Oscar race, hopefully people actually listen to what you say and stop making ridiculous assumptions about your thoughts on a lot of these films – especially when you are talking about Green Book since what you have to say about that movie makes a lot of sense!
“I hadn’t realised how similar the films I mention every year are to Sasha!”
I realized it a long time ago. 🙂 From the very start, really. (The year of 12 Years a Slave, my #1, when that and The Wolf of Wall Street – and Frozen – were my favorites, and also the movies Sasha seemed to have liked the most. Definitely Wolf, which I think was her #1, and 12 Years she was at least championing hard throughout, as was I. The biggest similarities were in the Arrival year and this year, with First Man. There are other movies both of us love in each of those years, but I think those were also Sasha’s #1’s, not just mine, which is the most striking similarity.) I have reasons to point it out every year. (How similar MY tastes are to Sasha’s.) And I usually do.
Makes sense, since our tastes (mine and yours) are also quite similar.
Thank you for this exceptionally great podcast! I love to hear your thoughts in such great detail about each of the films and the Best Picture race itself. It’s hard to really talk about this beast of a season in articles or comments, and even previous podcasts tended to focus more on one film than about all of them and the race in general. I think this is my favourite piece on this site this year. So thanks again for that.
Also, it should be a good listen for anyone who have been accusing you with all kinds of bias because of writing or not writing a specific thing in the articles. You clearly state your relationships to all the movies which shuts down all the undeserved criticism about this.
We appreciate the kind words, especially near the end of what has been a very trying and wearying awards season for all of us. Thank you!
