My word! The ISA this year overlaps with all my favourites this year while non of BP nominees are in my top five and only might make my top ten. My two absolute favourites are recognised but they should have won bigger awards. Still, this is much improvement on the Oscars.
Good job Spirit Awards! Finally some much deserved love for the masterpiece that is If Beale Street Could Talk.
Beale St., Richard E. Grant and Eighth Grade! I’m very happy.
This is a fanboy question that may ruin my astonishing record of elaborated and entirely intellectual comments on this site, but who is this beautiful actress that announces “Roma” being the winner for Best International Feature?
Honestly, wow..!
Probably Gemma Chan.
Thanks, I guess you´re probably right!

yep yep.
Gemma and Tessa. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/d8fde12af9345544626f450d55cdc988e3db33a5a6906d2877c58d159014717a.jpg
[note to myself: Putting “Crazy Rich Asians”, this most criminally overlooked film of the award season – replacing “First Reformed” for that title – on my list of “must see-films” right behind Free Solo]
Gemma looked priddy at the SAG awards too.

Damn, delicious!
I’m really disappointed that ”Crazy Rich Asians” got skunked by the Oscars. I really thought it had a shot at Adapted Screenplay, Costumes and Supporting Actress. Oh, well, at least Michelle Yeoh is reportedly a presenter tonight.
Crazy Rich Asians had the best looking cast ever.
These are not bad. They’re a little safe but they’re solid choices
Tonight will be a triumph for foreign language auteur cinema – prepare yourself! 😉
And it will be the end of moviemaking as we knew it. It will be catastrophic. And once Netflix’s, er, Pandora’s Box is opened, there’s no way to stuff it back into that box.
And Roma winning best picture is going to do that how exactly? Are voters going to say: “I hated Netflix but now that Roma has won best picture, it’s better than anything else”?
He doesn’t know, he’s here literally every day announcing that Roma is the literal death of cinema. Maybe Cuaron fucked his girlfriend or something:
Oh fuck the hell off already. You say the same motherfucking thing on every goddamn article you fucking idiot.
Fuck off yourself, dickhead scum.
Fuck off yourself, dickhead scum.
Did Cuaron fuck your girlfriend or something?
For those of you who don’t have the time or envy to go to church this Sunday morning, the coven comes to you!

Reminds me of Francesco Trueba´s acceptance speech (for Belle Epoque, I guess) where he pointed out that he would like to believe in God in order to thank him, but he only believes in Billy Wilder! 🙂
Richard E. Grant’s speech was PERFECTION. I truly hope he pulls off a major upset tomorrow night at The Oscars. I don’t think or predict he will but I’ll be over the moon if he does. He seems like a genuinely nice and fascinating person and he gave an absolutely brilliant performance in Can You Ever Forgive Me? Mahershala is as exceptional as ever in Green Book but if I had to choose between the two performances, I’d personally choose Richard’s. He absolutely floored me with his deliciously colorful work.
Really, really happy for his win. Deserved to say the least.
I was so thrilled he won, his speech was so amazing and he was so filled with joy!
Ethan Hawke couldn´t attend, so Amanda Seyfried accepted for him. I´ll post it here, cause Hawke´s performance was so amazing and “First Reformed” is clearly one of those criminally overlooked films of the season.

For you cinematography buffs out there: Sayombhu Mukdeeprom won for ”Suspiria” and it’s his 2nd Spirit Award. Last year, Mukdeeprom won this prize for his beautiful lensing of ”Call Me by Your Name.”
He really should’ve at least been nominated for the Oscar last year. He literally created summer.
”Call Me by Your Name” deserved twice as many Oscar nominations that it got: a measly 4. Should’ve been up for Cinematography, Direction, Hammer and Stuhlbarg, too.
The camera panned to Toni Collette when Glenn Close was making her speech. She didn’t look happy.
Well she could have campaigned. She could have turned up to the Gothams.
Toni who? 🙂
I’d really like to see Richard E. Grant’s complete acceptance speech. I can find many of the other Spirit winners’ clips online, but not his (so far). He reportedly paid tribute to Sam Rockwell and Chris O’Dowd, who at various times were supposed to play his role in ”Can You Ever Forgive Me?” Grant also saluted Marielle Heller and Melissa McCarthy, and emotionally called their film ”an homage” to the generation of men who were wiped out by AIDS. … Grant has said he fully expects Mahershala Ali to win Sunday, but Grant deserves a prize for being such a good sport who’s been having a blast this awards season.

Thanks, Pauleta!
Had this speech happened at Golden Globes, he would have been the frontrunner this season.
If Ali won the Globe for ”Moonlight,” the Foreign Press might’ve been more open to give it to Grant. Instead, this was (to me) an IOU for Ali and category fraud.
Aubrey’s opening was the best that was done since Ricky Gervais’s at the Globes. Seriously, she was amazing.
Paul Schrader is strapping the barb wire to himself.
Harsh. But plausible.
For the record, I definitely think Grant could win tomorrow, even if the stats mostly don’t support it…
All that matters is that Oscar voters DO support it!
Of course. Seems like it might be the case. But the stats say it likely won’t be, and, in these cases, the stats usually prevail. But not always, which (coupled with the output from the anonymous ballots) is why I can see it.
I don’t see how Beale Street is being overlooked in these awards shows. It was Almost perfection and made a strong statement about the prison system. A little slow in parts, but Barry made his point. Very relevant for today. Oh well….instead we get the (dreadful) BlackKK leading the discussion and Beale Str. is buried.
Is it just me or Thomasin McKenzie looks like young Jodie Foster?

A tall Jody Foster
Which of the Oscar BP contenders were ineligible for Best Feature here?
Most all of them, I think the Spirits have a requirement that films be under a certain budget.
Nothing up 15 million dollars
20 million, to be exact
My Indie Spirit voting record is intact. For the 3rd year I’ve voted for exactly 3 winners. This year it was Close and the 2 for Can You Ever Forgive Me. I voted for Leave No Trace in all the categories If Beale Street (a film I pretty much dislike) won. Well, at least I got a lot of great screeners.
I am a indie spirit voter . I voted for the winner in 6 of 13 catogories I can vote on.
If Beale street could talk was better than 7 of the 8 best picture Oscar nominations.
I did not vote for Glenn Close she is a wonderful actor but The Wife was a dreadful film . She did give an Oscar performance. When she wins tomorrow it will be a life achievement award.
It will be remembered as one of the less egregious ‘lifetime achievement awards’ if at all, because she is actually great in the movie.
Glenn Close’s performance was one of the stronger ones this year and is good enough to be winning awards.
You must be a Gaga groupie.
I got 4 wrong only my best ever was 3 wrong, so happy with winners and Aubrey plaza did great and she is crazy!
I love Aubrey Plaza! Was considering watching this just for her… But too busy, in the end.
Glenn Close is nominated for her performance in the film. She is not the director, writer, producer.
I voted for 5 of the winners but I skipped documentary and editing due to not being able/having time to see American Animals, Mid90s, On Her Shoulders and Of Fathers and Sons and You Were Never Really Here would have been my vote in editing if I had voted so I guess we’ve got quite similar amounts of winning votes
When’s the last time none of the Spirit Awards best picture nominees matched those of the Oscars.
2008 I believe.
Exactly. A long damn time. BTW, are you an architect, an importer/exporter or a marine biologist?
Spirits > Oscars
Can you ever forgive me and Beale street could talk could walk away with an award tomorrow at
Barry Jenkins is a fine fine man 🙂
How I would love to see Toni Collette win!
Let’s hope Grant repeats tomorrow!
Now these are fabbo film awards 🙂
Stream? 🙁
Facebook one isn’t working :-((
And they all wonder why there is no interest in their films and low ratings etc.
If I tell you where to find a stream, will you come back here to talk about what you see? Please? 🙂

We’ll post clips of the winners here on the site, after the show.
Found it myself, that’s why I was gone for 2hrs. And I did post a comment right after 🙂
Good man! 🙂
Richard E. Grant is so gracious and appreciative. I won’t care much if he wins tomorrow.
Which trait, incidentally, might be the very reason he wins tomorrow.
i know, what a lovely presence he has been this Oscar season, just loving it all and coming across as really genuine!
