The Central Park Five got a documentary a few years back, but now is coming to Netflix as a four-part limited scripted series co-written and directed by Ava DuVernay. Readers of this site will for sure know who DuVernay is, but if you don’t, she’s the first black woman nominated for a Golden Globe in directing and the first woman of color whose film was nominated for Best Picture. It’s hard to sum up all that DuVernay is and does — from launching a successful production company (Array) to the brilliant Queen Sugar television series on Own, the 13th Documentary, a Wrinkle in Time and on and on.
When They See Us will show on Netflix on May 31. You can find more info here. www.netflix.com/whentheyseeus
DuVernay says, “In 1989, five black and brown teen boys were wrongly accused of a crime they did not commit and branded The Central Park Five, a moniker that has followed them since that time. In 2019, our series gives the five men a platform to finally raise their voices and tell their full stories. In doing so, Korey, Antron, Raymond, Kevin and Yusef also tell the story of many young people of color unjustly ensnared in the criminal justice system. We wanted to reflect this perspective in our title, embracing the humanity of the men and not their politicized moniker.”
From the press release–
About When They See Us:
Based on a true story that gripped the country, When They See Us will chronicle the notorious case of five teenagers of color, labeled the Central Park Five, who were convicted of a rape they did not commit. The four part limited series will focus on the five teenagers from Harlem — Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise. Beginning in the spring of 1989, when the teenagers were first questioned about the incident, the series will span 25 years, highlighting their exoneration in 2002 and the settlement reached with the city of New York in 2014.
When They See Us was created by Ava DuVernay, who also co-wrote and directed the four parts. Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King from Participant Media, Oprah Winfrey from Harpo Films, and Jane Rosenthal, Berry Welsh and Robert De Niro from Tribeca Productions will executive produce the limited series alongside DuVernay through her banner, Forward Movement. In addition to DuVernay, Attica Locke, Robin Swicord, and Michael Starrbury also serve as writers on the limited series.
The series stars Emmy Award® Nominee Michael K. Williams, Academy Award® Nominee Vera Farmiga, Emmy Award® Winner John Leguizamo, Academy Award® Nominee and Emmy Award® Winner Felicity Huffman, Emmy Award® Nominee Niecy Nash, Emmy Award® Winner and two-time Golden Globe Nominee Blair Underwood, Emmy Award® and Grammy Award® Winner and Tony Award® Nominee Christopher Jackson, Joshua Jackson, Omar J. Dorsey, Adepero Oduye, Famke Janssen, Aurora Perrineau, William Sadler, Jharrel Jerome, Jovan Adepo, Aunjanue Ellis, Kylie Bunbury, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Storm Reid, Chris Chalk, Freddy Miyares, Justin Cunningham, Ethan Herisse, Caleel Harris, Marquis Rodriguez, and Asante Blackk.
I wonder how the drama will handle the testimony of Melonie/Melody Jackson (different articles give her a different first name) -I haven’t seen comments from her in the news since the original trial.

Wow! Limited Series is going to be a crowded field at the Emmys. Escape at Dannemora, Sharp Objects, Very English Scandal, True Detective, Fosse/Verdon, Catch-22, and now this. There are some great actors in When They See Us, can’t wait for this.
Guess racism can’t be solved by a good old fashioned “hugging it out”, eh?
Just kidding…just kidding.
I’m actually very glad the project exists, and frankly I’m amazed that in 2016 the fellow who became the titular President was allowed to skate on his part of that fiasco. In my mind that was one of the biggest tactical errors the Democratic nominee made, not even bothering to make that an issue.
CP5 was already made into a documentary. But in thinking about Netflix, it’s a 24 hour content service, and they need massive amounts of content. Netflix doesn’t have local news shows or national news shows, so it relies on “content”, so every producer and their family is going to Netflix.
“Netflix doesn’t have local news shows or national news shows”
Correct. Netflix doesn’t have wall-to-wall weather maps, high school football scores, and panels of jackasses yelling at each other all day long.
I LUV the weather channel.
