“We’ve passed on all we know. A thousand generations live in you now. But this is your fight.” The Star Wars sequel trilogy will reach its conclusion with “Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker,” whose title and teaser trailer were revealed today at the Star Wars Celebration event in Chicago.
After handing off the reins to Rian Johnson for “The Last Jedi,” “The Force Awakens” director J.J. Abrams returns, as does the main cast of Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver. They will be joined by Star Wars newcomers Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, and Naomi Ackie. Mark Hamill reportedly will also come back as Luke Skywalker despite his character’s fate in “The Last Jedi,” while unused footage of the late Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa will be used in the film.
Finally, Billy Dee Williams will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian. And it appears a major antagonist from the original and prequel trilogies will make an appearance as well, as hinted by the end of the teaser.
This is the first poster for the film:
“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” arrives in theaters December 20.

If they say “Just kidding, Rey is actually a Skywalker,” that’ll be pretty fucking stupid.
I’m one of the very few who enjoyed the last jedi immensely. looking forward to this
Very few? It had great reviews, a great Cinemascore, and great box office. It was a very popular film.
See I am with you on Last Jedi, which is kinda why I am not so much looking forward to this, they are selling it as “yeah okay we are going to go back on the last jedi because we know you didn’t like it” when in fact I think the majority did, it was just a very vocal minority ruining things for everyone.
This.
The 2016 Oscars were odious in that the best director of 2015 was shanghaied into presenting an inferior peer with the Best Director award of 2015. Not to mention the successful conning of the Academy membership into believing Mad Max Fury Road was better than TFA.
Force Awakens was better than MM:FR? I’m sorry, did you get some lens flare in your eyes?
ahahah listen dude. Mad Max was better than ANY star wars movie. Get your fanboyism off your eyes
Mad Max Fury Road is probably one of the top 100 films of all time, a pinacle in action genre, and also meaningful and deep.
The closest that Star Wars has come to deliver a masterpiece are episode V: Empire Strikes Back (thanks to one of the best retcons/twists in film history) and, oddly enough, Rogue One, which was a great film. Why A New Hope is film history, is because it changed the industry, and expanded the visual effects and technical side of the industry… but not because it was a masterpiece in filmmaking, by any means. It was a **** out of ***** film. For “meaty” franchises, just go to Star Trek or even better, for the modern take on “Battlestar Gallactica”.
OMG! This looks like the best movie ever! I can’t wait. I’m going to line up in early November for it, and so are all my friends. I’m also going to….oh shoot…,my mom’s calling me for dinner or else I’d write more.
Troll alert?
Uh oh. Chronic troll is getting huffy.
Trolls don’t smoke weed!
The trolls I know do.
Really? Laughing Buddha or Nine Pound Hammer?
I am hype
In JJ I trust. And we’re going to have TWO billion-dollar domestic grossing films this year. Bank it.
Its not going to do better box office than the force awakens – that is nothing to do with quality really its that the force awakens fed the world who hadn’t had a new Star Wars film in a long time a healthy dose of nostalgia so it made a lot of money. Since then we have been getting them constantly and rather than being fed with nostalgia many people are feeling a Star Wars fatigue so less people will show up. Regardless of quality this won’t make more money than the force awakens.
It’s quite clear from this that Abrams is back and is pushing the series back to what it was expected to be both visually and narratively.
And that is NOT a good thing
I agree, I like the force awakens, it’s a fun star wars film just not very inventive and doesn’t push any boundaries… Which is what I expect this to be… Coming from The Last Jedi which was a refreshing realisation that this series can bust boundaries and can do something new and get out of tired routine. Oh well, I will hold out hope for Johnson’s new trilogy!
So, Abrams has retconed Rey into a Skywalker.
As we most expected.
Yawn.
The Disney Star Wars so far…
