have watched them every year since childhood scheduled air date fluctuates between late Feb/Early March since 2008 ish. mind you less than 3.5% of the US population actually watched the Oscars in 2021 as for Football season there’s 16 regular games 3 playoff games and Super bowl where as about 29% of the US population watched Super Bowl 55 on February 7th next years Oscars fall on the Closing night of the Winter Olympics in Beijing while the 56th Super Bowl is Scheduled for February 13th 2022 the 79th Golden Globes date hasn’t been announced yet and the 28th Screen Actors Guild Awards are set to air March 13th 2022
Now the Oscars will be televised with the presidential primaries so brave yourself
The Oscars should be a March thing and always a Monday. That’s how I remember it from the 90s
Is it just me of is Big Little Lies bad now?
Honestly, I think Season 1 was overrated as well.
I’m happy that the Academy has decided to stick to late February for at least the foreseeable future. However, I’m still cynical regarding what their plans for the 2023 (95th) ceremony are because I cannot tell if they only chose the late February date because they voluntarily did so or because of simply date logistics (aka going to February 12 in 2023).
If ABC and the Academy think they can goose up ratings by moving the date even earlier in the calendar, I have a bridge to sell to them. I know the NFL hoopla is way too powerful, but it is a bad idea for the Oscars to be held earlier in the year. You do not want to go up against the NFL playoffs (Disclaimer: The Golden Globes occur during the playoffs, but they are not as a bigger spectacle than the Oscars are). Oh, did I mention that Roger Goodell wants to add one more week to the NFL’s regular schedule? Although I think 18 weeks of NFL football is both ridiculous (and unhealthy to player’s health), the Academy would be served best by not trying to pick a fight with the NFL.
Honestly, my ideal date would be the first or second Sunday in March, but that final Sunday in February is a benefit for Oscar voters and general movie fans like me to see EVERY nominated film. That way the voters don’t make rushed decisions, and us general public can know who and what to root for.
I agree with all of this almost 100% they have had the Oscars first weekend of March a few times lately and I really do think it has helped to make sure voters saw films. Just think about the nominees 2 years ago (dinner moving back the awards also moved back nominations) – if the Oscars had been moved forward Phantom Thread (which was ignored everywhere else) wouldn’t have been seen enough and would’ve been ignored by Oscar too but instead the Oscars were late enough that it could be seen and processed and it did very well. Even if you don’t like Phantom Thread specifically (it was in my top 5 of the year) it can only be a good thing that the voters get time to see and process now films.
Same thing you said about Phantom Thread could be said about Martin Scorsese’s Silence. This already narrow time frame gives Oscar voters little time to make wise decisions.
By the way, unless you’re the Super Bowl, the Oscars (or any non-NFL event for that matter) aren’t getting sky high ratings like they did in the 70s-90s. Technology has changed all that.
If only people had taken notice of Silence back then, it really was such a disappointment that absolutely everyone ignored it apart from cinematographers.
