HBO unveil two high profile trailers at San Diego Comic Con today. First up, Damon Lindelof’s sequel to Watchmen, the famed Alan Moore / Dave Gibbons graphic novel. After watching this, my first thought was we should not count out Emmy and Oscar-winner Regina King in the Drama Actress 2020 Emmy race. She looks fantastic here, as she usually does. The supporting cast looks heavy with talent, including Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, and Jean Smart. Will this series serve as a strong awards follow-up to Game of Thrones? Or is this another Leftovers – acclaimed but all-but ignored by the Television Academy.
We’ll find out when Watchmen drops in October. Here’s the trailer.
And then there’s Westworld Season 3 or as they’re calling it Westworld III. It looks visually stunning, particularly the Nazi World section? I don’t know you’ll have to tell me. I bailed three episodes into Season 2.
Westworld III drops in 2020 – likely spring.
Marvel announced the first wave of Phase 4 and this is why you SHOULD get excited about the new direction(s) of the MCU (Feige is a genius).
– The real Mandarin is going to be appearing, will be played by Tony Leung, and it will be in Shang Chi… the first Chinese-aimed MCU film, expect it to blow b.o. records in China.
– Dr. Strange 2 will be a HORROR film with Scarlet Witch and Nightmare (one of the most cinematic villains in Marvel, think of Misterio x 1000) will be the nemesis. Plus it is named specifically it will be dealing with the Multiverse, plus you have to mix this up with…
– WandaVision the limited series in Disney+ which clearly can set up the “Avengers: Dissasembled” and “House of M” storylines, the easier way to get the mutants and Fantastic Four into the MCU
– 2 Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, is Blade. Wow
– Nathalie Portman IS Thor, directed by Taika Waititi. DOUBLE WOW.
– Eternals shapes up with a star-studded cast and will open new ways.
– Black Widow is back and still unclear if it is a prequel or an alternate reality film. I think, the second.
– What if? Being ANIMATED but voiced by the original actors.
– Even more interesting is what they didn’t show… no “Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3”, no “Black Panther 2”, no “Namor: The Submariner” and specifically hinted that soon there will be news about MCU mutants and Fantastic Four (which are already cleverly teased on “Spiderman: Far from Home”, so they are effectively fast-tracking them, expect them to be introduced even in August in Disney convention). It is in August when they seem to be releasing the potentially biggest bets with GotG, BP and Avengers upcoming films, that will be the highest bets by Marvel/Disney. I have to love how they’re not sleeping and actually reshaping and expanding in different ways. I hope also – fingers crossed – they save “The New Mutants” film. in all ways, they seem to be betting hard on the comic-book by releasing a new volume with probably one of the most interesting mix up of characters the franchise ever had.
So yeah, in Feige I trust.
Why is it (or is it me?) that all the Rorschachs in the Watchmen trailer look like they’re wearing Mr. Wrestling II masks?
