Ah, my year just a whole lot better as Ricky Gervais has been announced as the host of the Golden Globes. I really love this and I would urge the Academy to invite Gervais at some point. What the hive mind that flips out about Oscar hosts needs is a host who DOES NOT GIVE A F*ck about the controversies that bubble up and that person is Ricky Gervais. He has a tough skin, a healthy perspective and is one of the funniest humans on the planet. BUT it is really his devotion towards animals that is his most redeeming feature, among other things. Yes, HFPA. Nice move!
COMEDY SUPERSTAR RETURNS FOR FIFTH TIME TO HOST
77TH ANNUAL GOLDEN GLOBE® AWARDS, SET FOR SUNDAY, JAN. 5 ON NBC
“Hollywood’s Party of the Year®” Brings TV and Film’s Best and Brightest to The Beverly Hilton for Unforgettable Three-Hour Live Telecast
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. (November 12, 2019) – Global comedy superstar Ricky Gervais, in his unique and legendary fashion, will resume hosting duties for a record fifth time at the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards. The three-hour telecast will air live on NBC coast to coast Sunday, January 5, 2020 at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif.
The Golden Globes serve as the official kickoff to the 2020 awards season. 25 categories — 14 in film and 11 in television — are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
“Once again, they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse. But this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening,” said Gervais.
“There is always a palpable electricity in the room when Ricky takes the Globes stage. His return as master of ceremonies at the Golden Globes is much anticipated,” said Paul Telegdy, Chairman, NBC Entertainment. “It is sure to make for an unexpected evening. We can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve.”
“When Ricky Gervais is at the helm of the Golden Globes Awards, we can always expect the unexpected,” said President of the HFPA Lorenzo Soria. “We’re excited to see it all unfold on Jan. 5!”
“In a world where many award shows are opting to go the no host route, the Golden Globes are going all in! It’s going to be a great night,” added Mike Mahan, CEO, dick clark productions.
Last January’s NBC telecast of “The 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards” averaged 18.6 million viewers in “live plus same day” Nielsens, delivering the biggest audience for a primetime telecast, excluding news and sports, in 10 months, since the prior March’s Academy Awards. The Jan. 6 “Golden Globes” coverage also generated a year-to-year increase in the key adults 18-49 demographic, with a 5.2 rating vs. a 5.0. That 5.2 more than quadrupled NBC’s non-sports 18-49 average in the timeslot the previous season and the audience of 18.6 million was up 13.5 million persons versus the prior season’s average.
Creator and star of “The Office” and “Extras,” Ricky Gervais has won three Golden Globes, two Primetime Emmys and seven BAFTAS. “The Office” is the most successful British comedy of all time, shown in more than 90 countries with seven remakes. The NBC version is the most successful U.S. remake of a British show in more than 30 years.
Gervais hosted the Golden Globes in 2010-12 and returned for a fourth time in 2016.
Considered the most influential British comedian since Charlie Chaplin, Gervais is an award-winning stand-up comedian, with five international tours to date. His live stand up show “Fame” became the fastest selling UK stand-up show in history.
Gervais can most recently be seen in the dark comedy “After Life,” which he created, directs, stars in and executive produced. The series premiered March 8 worldwide on Netflix and will return for a second season in 2020.
In 2017, Gervais toured worldwide with his first stand-up special in seven years. “Humanity,” which was also recorded as a Netflix special, takes aim at human behavior with his trademark wit. He recently embarked on his follow up tour, “SuperNature,” which will also be released on Netflix.
Gervais is featured in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the most downloaded Internet show of all time. He was named in Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World and awarded the Sir Peter Ustinov Comedy Award from the Banff World Television Festival.
The Golden Globe Awards, often referred to as “Hollywood’s Party of the Year,” is one of the biggest nights on the calendar for live viewing. It’s also one of the few awards shows that combine the honorees of both film and television. The 2019 Golden Globe Awards telecast averaged a 5.2 rating in adults 18-49 and 18.6 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research.
Produced by dick clark productions in association with the HFPA, the Golden Globe Awards are viewed in more than 210 territories worldwide. Lorenzo Soria is President of the HFPA. Mike Mahan, CEO of dick clark productions and Barry Adelman, Executive VP of Television at dick clark productions will serve as executive producers.
Glad to have a comedian who doesn’t pander back hosting.
I’d rather have no host than a transphobic host, but can’t win them all I guess….
Okay can we be done with this BS. My approach to “bad taste” comedy is to look at who the person making it is and whether the joke is actually doing any damage. At the globes what he said wasn’t even transphobic it was just a joke about the stereotype of women not being able to drive that mentioned Jenner – there really wasn’t anything transphobic about it. Sure he went a bit further in his stand up special but it was put in a way that was clearly meant as humour not intended to be taken seriously. Square that with Gervais as a person: he campaigned for marriage equality, he constantly fundraises for human and animal rights causes and often uses his twitter platform to highlight injustices in the world – especially as it relates to animal and environmental causes but human causes too.
Yes he tells jokes that are dark but square that with him as a person and he more than makes up for it. Also the Caitlyn Jenner joke was funny and clever, regardless of your view of trans rights and to be entirely clear he has gone after Jenner and Blaire White because they have used their status as trans people to spread their shitty alt righty views and they deserve to be attacked for that. I say this as a gay man really heavily involved in the queer community in my city and I know plenty of trans people who will back me up on this.
The only ways you can take his “I identify as a chimp” bit are him saying “I think trans people are mentally ill” or “I think trans people are lying about their gender identity” or “I don’t care about trans people” or maybe all of the above. He frequently notes that the concept of listing ones pronouns is something to be ridiculed. He doesn’t care about trans people. Not really sure how else to see it. Keep going though.
I really hope the Oscars have a host this year! Whoever it is…
CRINGE. His roast comedy style is so 10 years ago.
Its so easy to make fun of celebrities’ flop careers and face-lifts and be nasty. How edgy. Besides hollywood’s already run itself to the ground, and struggling for relevance, so what is there left to roast? Maybe he’s the final nail?
I wish they find a new young comedian with new style and materials and give them opportunities instead of throwbacks.
Wonderful news. Just what we need in this period of Puritan nitpicking and Film Twitter taking itself very seriously.
Praise be!!! Best news ever!!!
I’m only on board if and only if…
…he goes too far.
Doesn’t they have 5 or 10 sec delay in case someone goes too far? I stopped watching these shows long time ago but I kind of remember something like that.
They do but they certainly didn’t use it when he made fun of closet cases Tom Cruise and John Travolta. The stars in the room found the joke both hilarious and offensive. This is a moment the Oscars could only dream of having. Haha.
I have nothing again Ricky but I actually prefer when these shows go hostless
YES ! I can’t wait to see him roast the entire industry once again, always on point, always outrageously hilarious and we sure af could use some of that nowadays.
it’s too bad we don’t have a live telecast of the Globes on Portuguese TV. I have yet to find a stream of it, sadly. This is one of those shows you really want to see live

Bingo. If shows have mostly comedians doing little sketches as they hand out the awards anyway, you don’t really need a host on top of everything else.

“What the hive mind that flips out about Oscar hosts needs is a host who DOES NOT GIVE A F*ck about the controversies that bubble up and that person is Ricky Gervais.”
What is interesting is that lately the Oscars have become quite very political, potentially alienating some conservative viewers. What’s left are more liberal voters, some of whom are exactly part of the “woke twitter” that creates the controversies and would potentially not tune in if the host was not to their liking. So if the Oscars pick a host “woke twitter” doesn’t like, they lose both conservative and liberal viewers, and I’m not sure they can afford that.
