Kafka’s matryoshka? Like a Russian nesting doll designed by Salvador Dali comes this poster from impawards.com via Cinematical.

In response to shiny, bigger, better American consumerism comes Cold Souls, a metaphysical comedy in which souls can be extracted and traded as commodities. Balancing on a tightrope between deadpan humor and pathos, and between reality and fantasy, the film presents Paul Giamatti as himself, agonizing over his interpretation of Uncle Vanya. Paralyzed with anxiety, he stumbles upon a solution via a New Yorker article about a high-tech company promising to alleviate suffering by deep-freezing souls. Giamatti enlists their services, intending to reinstate his soul once he survives the performance. But complications ensue… (IMDb)

With Dina Korzun, Emily Watson, David Strathairn & Lauren Ambrose. Cold Souls opens November 12.

didn’t find going xxl creppy at all. :)

and i wonder what emily watson’s gonna do ????

did you find that creepy ???? ; )

  2. Ryan Adams June 15th, 2009 at 1:35 pm 2

ha, glimmer. For some reason, seeing Paul Giamatti peering out over the hedgerow of his own beard chopped into stepped rice terraces struck me as creepy, but I guess I could’ve thought of a better word.

whatever Emily Watson does, I’m likely to love. The creepier the better.

Am I the only one who thinks this an ill-devised palimpsest of “Eternal Sunshine”?

  4. Ryan B June 15th, 2009 at 2:25 pm 4

I love this cast. Nice to see Lauren Ambrose in a film too.

  5. Joao Mattos June 15th, 2009 at 2:44 pm 5

Amazing poster! Yes, it resembles other posters, but is still cool. Giamatti is great. Saw “Hawk is Dying” last week. What a great actor.

    Wow, that’s a nice poster
No idea what the movie is about though, had never even heard of it, but the poster looks great and immediately got me excited.

  7. X-Men Origins: Alfredo June 15th, 2009 at 4:09 pm 7

Could someone be nominated for an Oscar playing himself??

  8. George June 15th, 2009 at 4:38 pm 8

I’m excited for it. I always enjoy these offbeat comedies.

  9. Austin Lee June 15th, 2009 at 4:38 pm 9

Mickey Rourke. Answer to the question above by X-Men Origins: Alfredo.

Not to say it wasn’t a deserving nomination.

  10. Kay June 15th, 2009 at 4:42 pm 10

Cold Souls will be the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind of 2004.

to #7, the answer is yes.

Hain S. Ngor almost played himself on The Killing Fields and won.

John Malkovich was probably considered for spoofing his persona on “Being John Malkovich”

And – don’t kill me – but I honestly think Jean-Claude Van Damme should have seen runner up to Mickey Rourke at every single lead actor award for his truly moving and gutsy performance in “JCVD”. Basically he goes to places Malkovich preferred not to touch… Malkovich created a fake Malkovich, Van Damme bares himself in a slightly deformed for artistic – and legal – purpouses recreation of himself.

This is a great poster, but why is Paul Giamatti always soul-searching?

  13. Matt Mazur June 15th, 2009 at 6:28 pm 13

I’ve been told by a source that has seen the film already that Watson’s role is very, very small, which is sad.

  14. Proman June 15th, 2009 at 6:41 pm 14

    Kafkaesque or Kaufmanesque?

Either way, this certainly is a unique poster for what sounds like a unique movie. Can’t wait to see the trailer.

By the way, this poster reminded of the classic (and Oscar nominated) short called, “Your Face”.

Check it out here (you may have to wait through a 10sec Russian commerical first but it’s worth it):

I saw it at SIFF ( Seattle International Film Fest ) it’s one of Giamatti’s best performances. It has a touch of something you may have seen before, but not so much that it takes away from it. Everybody is good. It’s darkly amusing.

“This is a great poster, but why is Paul Giamatti always soul-searching?”

Good question. Because I guess Hollywood figures that if you’re not good looking, what else should you do but find other reasons to be happy.

    Coolest poster of the year!

  19. Anthony June 16th, 2009 at 7:51 pm 19

I’m sure I dropped the ball on this one and came in a dollar short and a day late (gotta love a sentence composed of tired cliches)… but, Yahoo has a kind of “dangle in front of your face, then yank it away” first look film clip…

    Awesome poster!

Paul Giamatti is an amazing actor, I even loved him in Duets! ;)

Certainly instantly makes me think of Eternal Sunshine, Synecdoche NY & I heart Huckabees, but I do always enjoy those metaphysical dramedies. Even the pretentious ones. Usually.

Really looking forward to this. Paul paul paul Giamatti!!

“The first time I saw The Hurt Locker, I had forgotten who the director was. As the film unfolded I kept saying to myself, “Wow, whoever directed this really has a unique intellect and highly focused directorial vision.” I knew that this film was different, that it had a depth not usually seen in a film set during wartime — but I didn’t know exactly how or why I was experiencing this reaction. When the end credits rolled, my “aha!” moment arrived. “So it’s a woman!” I thought, “It all makes sense to me now.”

Yet, I believe that Bigelow won the DGA — and quite possibly will win the Oscar — not because she’s female but because she did excellent work. Some voters may choose her to make some kind of political or feminist statement, but Bigelow’s name wouldn’t be on that ballot unless she deserved to be there.

Some claim that the dearth of awards recognition for female directors is because there are so few good female directors. To me, a statement like that ignores the fact that bias has prevented more women from getting good material to direct.”
