Depp is Burton’s 3-D Mad Hatter (?)

Posted by Ryan Adams On July - 29 - 2008

Digital Spy has the morning tea party news:

Tim Burton has reportedly signed Johnny Depp for his forthcoming Alice In Wonderland adaptation. The film, which will be presented in Disney Digital 3-D, will feature Depp as The Mad Hatter, according to The Sun.  A source commented: “Tim has had designs on Alice In Wonderland since before he was famous.

Can the news of Helena Bonham Carter as The Queen of Hearts be far behind?  Through the looking glass in 3-D sounds like an 8-dollar 90-minute acid-trip.  In a good way.  Does this void Nolan’s Mad Hatter?

      This is shocking news.

I, for one, will be excited if this is true. I don’t care what people say, I love Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaborations. Add in Alice in Wonderland, and you have a winner.

Yep, I completely agree with “k” here. Anthing that weds Depp to Burton, especially in whimsical/fantasy ventures, seems to always be the winning chemistry. I say “yes” to your Helena-Bonham Carter query, although I would hold back on any comparative speculation on teh Nolan at this point.

Alice and Tim & JOHNNY: Classic material. I am certain it will be better than Tim’s LAST MOVIE.

Oh, have i stepped on some toes? Sorry, but…….we disagree.

      Cheer……to all.

I’m sure this will be enjoyable. As long as he doesn’t pull a Charlie & The Chocolate Factory and take the focus off Alice — like Charlie — and put it squarely on Depp’s antics. And even then, unlike most people, I had a good time with the Wonka remake.

Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and Lewis Carroll… somehow the combination seems TOO neat, TOO obvious. The whole endeavour makes me wary and I can’t pinpoint why.

Maybe because Burton hasn’t made a relevant film since 1994?

      Fingers crossed, though.

Depp/Burton/Carter seems quite assured these days, and unless they give us a PLANET OF THE APES remake disaster or blandness of BIG FISH…I say they continue if they desire, or if anyone is willing to shell out the bucks.

Though I am growing tired of Burton not branching out, he still makes amazing movies, especially the ones with Depp and I love HBC so it all works for now.

I’m always up for another Burton-Depp collaboration. I just hope his Mad Hatter is more in the vein of their darker work, and not Depp’s take on Michael Jackson like his Willy Wonka was.

I’ve been excited for this movie for a very long time, and I’ve always hoped for Depp and Bonhman Carter as the Mad Hatter and Queen of Hearts. Now it seems half of that dream has come true already, so this is great news!
Sweeney Todd last year (best movie of 2007, I don’t care what anyone says =P) re-confirmed for me that I should be excited for anything Tim and Johnny do together.

      AWEsome news…

johnny Depp as the mad hatter is obvious genius (is it really still genius then)?
How about we start betting on the likelihood of The Mad Hatter having a much-extended role?
Actually, a film from the MAd Hatter’s perspective would be pretty interesting.

But on relapse, I do agree with Guy Lodge up there – there’s something a bit too obvious & perfect about this. Possibly a bit boring almost? (wait I take that back.)

I would pay double to see a Chris Nolan version tho…
& if he casts Johnny Depp… & applies his patent realism, well, I’ll eat my hat.

Ditto. This is a boring casting choice. I wish Depp would pick a normal role for once. I dunno–some Xerox machine maintenance guy, a UPS delivery man. Just not the silly outfits already.

      GAH.
