Teaser, The Last Airbender

Posted by Ryan Adams On June - 23 - 2009

ok, I confess to knowing zip about The Last Airbender, except that he’s based on Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. After seeing this trailer I’ve learned that he has impressive skills at blowing out candles. Seems to me that an armada of 500 aircraft carriers firing cruise missiles at Little Mr. Candle-Blower-Outer is overkill, but like I say, I know zip about his mythology or what else he might be threatening to blow out. Paramount has reserved July 2, 2010, for the opening so no doubt it’s important. ah, here we go:

The series follows the adventures of the main protagonist Aang and his friends, who must save the world by defeating the Fire Lord and ending the destructive war with the Fire Nation.

Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a fantasy world that is home to humans, fantastic animals, and spirits. Human civilization is divided into four nations: the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Air Nomads, and the Fire Nation. Each nation has its own natural element, on which it bases its society. Within each nation exists an order called “Benders” who have the ability to manipulate the eponymous element of their nation. The show’s creators assigned each Bending art its own style of martial arts, causing it to inherit the advantages and weaknesses of the martial arts it was assigned. The Bending types are Waterbending, Earthbending, Firebending, and Airbending

Cartoons are wonderful. This teaser looks fairly generic (the whole martial arts peformance is so Darth Maul) and the enemy ship reveal is total Troy trailer rip-off. That said, I`ve seen footage and picturs of Dev Patel as the antagonist prince Zuko and it pains me to say he looks ridiculous. They`ve done something to his eye-brows to make him look evil/scary and there`s no way in hell one can make Patel intimidating. Plus, he is the prince of the nation that is clearly Chinese in the cartoons (the names, clothes, dragons, chinese letters, etc), yet he is not Chinese. Unintentional laughs galore. Anyway, they were smart to keep him out of the teaser.

Shyamalan is getting worse and worse. This film looks like a cliched mess and the cast… well I think its right they left Patel out of the trailer, if he could not put in a good performance in a good film (Slumdog), then he is going to give a terrible performance in what looks like a terrible film.

  3. mrT June 23rd, 2009 at 10:15 am 3

I agree with ‘birdistheword’ this film looks like an all time low for Shyamalan. The special effects look bad and in this day and age if a film does not have passable special effects then that means the films going to suck so I think we have a contender for the 2011 Razzies. Possible nominations: Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Supporting for Patel..

Loved the cartoons, hated the teaser. Its Dragonball Evolution all over again…

  5. danny June 23rd, 2009 at 11:48 am 5

I didn’t think it was horrible. Not anything original, but still, who knows? I firmly believe Shyamalan didn’t just luck into the few movies he has made that were good. I still want him to keep trying. I’m doubtful this will be a comeback, but I don’t see why some people want him to fail (and before anyone that posted before me accuses me of accusing them, I wasn’t, I think your points were all valid.)

I love the show, but this…this…ugh.

  7. bambi June 23rd, 2009 at 12:37 pm 7

I don`t get why some people want Patel to fail. He was great in Slumdog and Skins. I just don`t think he`s the right actor for this role and as many fans of Airbender will point out, he would be a great Soka (goofy face and all). But, instead, they cast Jackson Rathbone who looks like a psycho (he also plays Jasper in Twilight series). This thing is miscast A-Z and I expected air-bending effect to be better than just smoke/wind/whatever that is. I mean, CGI is so developed now that I`m sure they could`ve put some creativity. Oh, well, it`s just a teaser, nothing really bad just unoriginal.

It’s probably going to blow. After The Happening I’ve given up hope for Shyamalan. He made three and a half very good films (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, half of The Village) and then lost his way somehow.

  9. Chance June 23rd, 2009 at 1:41 pm 9

Geez people…I liked it haha.. That’s all.

  10. Hans June 23rd, 2009 at 2:34 pm 10

Hmm, I always thought that Shyamalan tried to steer clear of CGI-driven films. I mean, come to think of it, I can’t really think of any special effects in his movies. It’s mostly been just make up, prosthetics, costumes, right?

That said, smart of Shyamalan to remove the word “Avatar” from the title. I always like the mythology of this series, with the four elements and all that cool stuff, so….we’ll see. If that martial arts thing at the beginning of the trailer was supposed to be impressive, however, it really…..wasn’t.

I think he will have made something very epic / cinematic. the teaser confirms this, remember he has been playing with the idea of making ‘mythological’ young adult fare before, he was offered harry potter, and life of pi … I think it is his destiny as a filmmaker to open up these doors in his career and he will create something special just like Alfonso Cauran did with Harry Potter 3… cant wait

is this direct to dvd? I’m so passing.

Why don’t they make live-action movies about the Nicktoons I grew up watching? Where’s the “Aaahh!!! Real Monsters” movie or one based on “Rocko’s Modern Life”?

  14. Ryan Adams June 23rd, 2009 at 4:09 pm 14

ha, you got Inspector Gadget, Diego. ;-)
and I think I remember a scene of somebody getting slimed in Shortbus.

Off topic (except if you file it under “How Unoriginal”), Coomingsoon.net just released first pictures of Blanchett in Robin Hood and, predictably, Marion is a warrior:

You would do well to actually watch the show. It is excellent and the next time you post you’ll actually *gasp* know what you’re talking about. That would be a change.

  19. Ryan Adams June 23rd, 2009 at 7:27 pm 19

I have too many things to watch that I’m more interested in, Matt. I posted this to open a place for anybody who cares about The Last Airbender to talk about it.

“I have just come from seeing Crazy Heart. I am always skeptical when it comes to award circles honoring veteran actors for a mediocre role, but in reality, it’s for their body of work. A sympathy vote. Before I saw Crazy Heart, Jeremy Renner clearly gave the best performance. I heard that Jeff Bridges’ character was a washed-up alcoholic country singer trying to clean his act up. Truly redundant and repulsive Oscar bait. I mean, that just reminds me of Robert Duvall winning for Tender Mercies! Alcoholics almost always guarantee an Oscar nomination, and perhaps even an Oscar! (Ray Milland in The Lost Weekend, Lee Marvin in Cat Ballou, Thomas Mitchell in Stagecoach, Nicolas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas). Now I’m not saying Jeff Bridges is a horrible actor. He’s a pretty good actor. I loved his earlier work, like The Last Picture Show and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. Even in Starman, I found him hilarious (weird, right?). So, from word of mouth, I figured Jeff Bridges would not be all that great. I was wrong.

Bridges put himself into this character so much, I almost forgot it was Jeff Bridges! I know, that’s hard to swallow, even for me! But he was on top of his game! Obviously, the movie had certain problems, but the movie was Jeff Bridges. Some may say his performance is subtle. True. It is a bit subtle. But it was just the little things Bridges does with his body movement, the way he speaks, his reaction to others, his singing (wow!), how he interacts with the little boy, how I looked deep into those tired blue eyes and saw the soul of this wrecked person. Bridges creates a character that you can believe. I mean, it IS easy to believe someone like Bridges playing this character, physically and otherwise. Along with my amazement Bad Blake come to life, I also pondered on the side of Bridges’ acting career as a whole, and put both the lives of Bridges and Blake and compared the two. The feeling was just too overwhelming.

If Jeff Bridges wins the Oscar (and after seeing his performance, I am pretty sure he will), it will not be a sympathy vote. Jeff Bridges brings a complex character to life with that special king of magic persona he shoots off the screen. I am for Jeff Bridges winning the Oscar.”
