The Invention of Lying

Posted by Ryan Adams On June - 26 - 2009

Thanks to George at CinemaRewind for pointing us to the trailer for Ricky Gervais new comedy, The Invention of Lying, with Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, Tine Fey, and Jonah Hill. Opening September 25, it involves “a world where no one has ever lied, until a writer seizes the opportunity for personal gain.”

I like the sound of “Oscar-nominated screenwriter, Ricky Gervais.”

Funnier in 2 minutes than 2 hours of Whatever Works?
(Just asking. Haven’t seen Whatever Works.)

    cool.

I’ve been hearing great things about the script.
Although i’m wondering how much got changed from script to final film. The script had a clear R-rating in mind. Especially considering f@ck was uttered over 20 times.
But hopefully the language was all they changed to get it down to PG-13.

And they also changed the title. It was originally “This Side of the Truth”

But hopefully the language was all they changed to get it down to PG-13.

I’m assuming that’s the case. I’ve read an early draft, and language was the only thing R-rated about it.

Rob Lowe is at his best when in douchebag mode.

    Love Jen Garner.

And ugh… what does Rob Lowe do to age so well? Drink baby blood? He’s 45 for pete’s sakes..

I don’t like Jennifer Garner, though I did like her in JUNO, so I’ll give her a chance here. The trailer does look funny.

And Ryan, I saw WHATEVER WORKS. You’re not missing a lot, though Evan Rachel Wood and Patricia Clarkson are good.

Considering how much I loved Extras and the Office, I felt like Ghost Town was somewhat ho-hum (although Gervais didn’t write it)

Still, I have high hopes for this round.

“Ghost Town” is actually pretty darn good considering it was marketed terribly. Went completely under the radar despite getting pretty strong reviews.

  9. Ryan Adams June 26th, 2009 at 11:53 pm 9

yeah Jon, I thought Ghost Town was the most consistently funny movie of 2008. Pineapple Express had some great laughs — but then it turned into Another 48 Hours in the last half hour.

  10. Clayton June 27th, 2009 at 12:25 am 10

I loved Ghost Town; most pleasant surprise at the theater last year.

This movie looks fantastic. With a great premise and cast (and trailer), I don’t see how it could go wrong.

This is going to be brilliant. Even if it’s not as funny or hilarious as Extras or The Office, Gervais has this infectious ability to just make me smile.

And boy does Oscar Nominated Writer Ricky Gervais sound fantastic, but Oscar Winner Ricky Gervais sounds so much better.

Oof. So this is like the negative of a Jim Carrey reel? Is this a trilogy? I wanted to get into this, but it seems like I’ve seen this before. Kind of. Sort of. Just opposite.

  13. Marianne June 27th, 2009 at 1:37 am 13

Random thought: I can’t stand Jennifer Garner. Can’t remember any good movie she did. Yeah, that means I didn’t like Juno, before you ask. She’s so…yawn.
About Whatever Works: I gave up Woody Allen 15 years ago, and I don’t regret. In fact, I just hate myself for not taking this decision much earlier. Sorry, Woody lovers. ;)

  14. Ryan Adams June 27th, 2009 at 1:45 am 14

“So this is like the negative of a Jim Carrey reel?”

Yes, in the sense that it’s the opposite of unfunny.

  15. Ryan Adams June 27th, 2009 at 1:52 am 15

“it seems like I’ve seen this before. Kind of. Sort of. Just opposite.”

That’s like saying you can’t appreciate Green Acres because The Beverly Hillbillies is the pinnacle of fish-out-of-water sitcoms. Kind of. Sort of.

  16. Ivich June 27th, 2009 at 4:21 am 16

What’s the song in the trailer?

  17. Ivich June 27th, 2009 at 4:37 am 17

OK, I know the song in the latter half is Blue Sky. The one in the beginning?

  18. mike June 27th, 2009 at 5:04 am 18

my god jennifer garner is so underrated! so funny and natural in this trailer! she should have beeen nominated for juno…
I´m screaming allison janney(away we go) and jennifer garner for supporting!
though i must say that I´m a little disappointed in this trailer… hope there will be another one with more tina fey and jonah hill…

  19. friedl June 27th, 2009 at 5:56 am 19

    a ha ha ha

    ”I don’t understand why I’m homeless and you’re not”

that’s Ricky Gervais genius for you – dry laughs with a painful punch.

Premise sounded dodgy, but this Looks awesome.

Ricky Gervais & Tina Fey sharing a screen – bliss.!

  20. Casey June 27th, 2009 at 1:34 pm 20

Ricky is honestly, imo, the funniest guy out there right now. Easily! This looks great

  21. tmoves June 27th, 2009 at 6:40 pm 21

Yeah, Ryan, kind of, sort of.

I jest. No, I understand what you’re saying. Hell, I’ve seen enough to know that there is no such thing as original, it just struck me as odd. And don’t get me wrong, I am by no means calling that Jim Carrey vehicle or its spawn the pinnacle of anything. Nor would I even equate the two comedians’ style (HuJax’s sweaty chest/Johnny Depp’s cool allure), but it didn’t seem very Gervais to me. Odd, I know, but that’s what I got when I saw the trailer.

But I’m not the best with comedies anyway. You know me: heavy on the gravitas, maybe a sprinkle of gore, a little warm death, lots of crying, heaps of neuroses, and definitely absurdly uncomfortable moments that may or may not involve verging on unsexy nudity. [I was going to insert a comparison here, but everything read "alarming" rather than "funny" so I left it out. See? Told ya.]

  22. Yvette June 27th, 2009 at 8:08 pm 22

Was really excited about this till I saw Jonah Hill. He is a bit of a degenerate for my liking. Why do people cast him?

“While I’m obviously not ruling it out, I don’t think Avatar will win Best Picture, and the new preferential voting system is precisely why. Had they stuck with just having each member vote on their favorite of the nominees, it might have won, but something tells me that there are a lot of people within the Academy who are part of the backlash against the film, and will therefore place it at #10 on their ballots. You have to keep in mind that from now on, the movie with the most #1 votes is not necessarily the movie that wins. It’s easy to imagine Avatar will get a lot of #1 votes, but it’s equally easy to imagine it will get a lot of #10 votes as well, and that will really hurt it.

So you kind of have to think more along the lines of which movie will have the least against it, rather than the most for it. The Hurt Locker will undoubtedly get a lot of #1 votes as it is the frontrunner, and while I’m sure there will be those who put it at or near the bottom of their ballots, it seems to me that it will have a lot less low-end placements than Avatar will, and so The Hurt Locker easily has the edge over Avatar in that respect.

Inglourious Basterds also seems like the kind of movie that will split voters. It’ll get a lot of #1 and #2 votes, but probably also a lot of #9 and #10 votes. So I don’t think it’ll win (though again, I’m not ruling it out). Precious will probably get less 9’s and 10’s, but I frankly don’t think it will get enough 1’s and 2’s to pull off a win. I think it’ll get mostly mid-range votes. Same goes for Up in the Air, though I imagine even that will get more 1’s and 2’s than Precious will.

So to sum it up, I think The Hurt Locker, while not an absolute, no-turning-back lock, is still the clear frontrunner in this race. If we’re talking about a potential upset though, why not really factor in the new preferential voting system and try to imagine how much that could end up benefiting a film like, say, Up? While it might not get too many #1 votes, I can easily see it getting a lot of 2-4 votes, and who know? If the frontrunners all develop strong enough backlashes, then it could be that this year’s Best Picture will go not to the movie that is the most liked, but rather the movie that is the least DISliked. Just saying.”
