Spring is in the air and we are nearing the first phase of Oscar watching, when the Cannes Film Fest rolls out. But April brings some interesting pics and we’ll shine a light on them in hopes of making Spring a slightly more interesting time of the year for awards watching.

April’s Must Sees:
Forbidden Kingdom
Shine a Light
Nim’s Island
Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden
Guilty Pleasures: The Ruins

May’s Must-Sees:
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

I mean, talk about your major blow out. No other movies in May. Period. Reader Cameron sends this in from Dark Horizons.

In English?!I’m confused; can’t tell if it’s going to big or a complete failure.
Also, is that the kid from Almost Famous,(and Will & Grace)? I’m thinking it might be erring more on the side of failure.
Well that’s a pretty crap selection to be honest. Last time I went to the cinema was to see TWBB, and that was after months in which I could barely get around to seeing everything I wanted to, even in the summer. Now it looks like I probably won’t be going back for a few months; I only want to see the Dark Knight and Wall E, and then ‘awards season’ will hopefully improve things; but am I completely wrong in thinking this year isn’t going to be as good as last year?

    2. McAllister March 21st, 2008 at 12:30 pm 2

In Bruges has been the only GREAT film of the year so far. I’ve enjoyed Cloverfield, Be Kind Rewind and La Misma Luna… but In Bruges is Oscar nomination worthy in a few categories. I’m looking forward to some good stuff finally coming out in the next couple months.

    3. Bernardo S March 21st, 2008 at 12:57 pm 3

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian is coming out on May. Part 1 garnered a few noms in 2005. Plus, I must be the only person in the world who prefers it to LOTR. :P (There, I said it. Don’t hit me.)

    4. jwright40 March 21st, 2008 at 1:15 pm 4

Well, I don’t know if I’d call them “must SEES”, Bob. 2008 looks to be rough going.

    5. SaltireFlower March 21st, 2008 at 2:14 pm 5

      LOL, Bernardo.
I’m looking forward to Prince Caspian, and though the actor they cast to play Caspian looks nothing like how I imagined, I still trust Andrew Adamson. Doesn’t Iron Man come out in May aswell?

    6. jk March 21st, 2008 at 2:33 pm 6

So is Cate Blanchett portraying Diablo Cody in the next Indiana Jones movie?

    7. Twindog March 21st, 2008 at 3:24 pm 7

iron man’s gonna kick some major butt at the B.O. in “May”. But it’s gonna be a close battle to see who wins that one. This year isn’t that good so far but the summer along with a few daring projects in the fall It could end up being kinda good but not as good as last year.

    8. Seankgallagher March 21st, 2008 at 3:37 pm 8

None of those April offerings are must see to me. As for the May movies, here’s another person looking forward to the new Narnia movie (though I do think the LOTR movies are more better). IRON MAN I’m not sure about, simply because I’m not sure about Favreau directing it. I’m also looking forward to REDBELT.

    9. Charles March 21st, 2008 at 3:47 pm 9

      jk-

      yes.

    10. Bill S. March 21st, 2008 at 4:00 pm 10

Really, no mention of Leatherheads? I have a weakness for screwball comedy, but Clooney, Zellweger, and Krasinski are something I’ve been waiting for since I heard about it last fall.

I’m not even going to mention what my guilty pleasure for April is — too many jaws dropped in sheer horror.

    11. Michelle March 21st, 2008 at 4:24 pm 11

Must see…The Life before Her Eyes. I saw it in Toronto…blew me away. Don’t let the crap title or the limited release dissuade you!
Best Uma in years, Best Evan and welcome Eva Amurri!

    12. ML March 21st, 2008 at 5:52 pm 12

something about the new indiana jones says “crap”

    13. Finn BV March 21st, 2008 at 7:32 pm 13

Bernardo — I’m with you. I love Narnia. I have had May 16 marked on my calendar ever since we knew the release date.

Saltire, I agree I imagined Caspian much more English-looking, but I quite like what they’ve done — envisioning all the Telmarines as Spanish descent because they were, as we know, originally pirates.

I just don’t get the Indiana Jones hype — could never get into them. Sorry. I know, I’m horrible. But they have never appealed to me and I have zero interest in seeing this upcoming one. That said, I’ll probably end up being dragged along by friends to see it anyway, but still…

    14. Proman March 21st, 2008 at 7:42 pm 14

Was there some hidden sarcasm I missed?

      April’s Must Sees????
      Forbidden Kingdom – No
      Shine a Light – Nah
Nim’s Island – Are you kidding me???
Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden – was curious at first but now NO!
Guilty Pleasures: The Ruins – Nopity

I know compared to Indy 4 everything pales (I’m counting seconds… to the Cannes premiere) but May does have Speed Racer which excites me a lot more than crapfest known as Narnia. Redbelt which will have a limited release is also a must see movie for me.

And Finn BV, how about you try to get into Indiana Jones is friggin awesome craze by actually watching the films? I’m sure you’ll dig them, babe ;) .

    15. Allen March 21st, 2008 at 10:40 pm 15

I think it’s completely stupid and short-sighted to leave Iron Man, Speed Racer and Caspian off the May list. At least a couple of commenters mentioned these movies. To be honest, I have no intention of ever seeing another Narnia movie since the first was so banal, unexciting and without urgency. But it’s idiotic to leave it off any list of May releases, as it will do well commercially and certainly has an opportunity to be nominated in tech categories. Similarly, Speed Racer should be eye candy, albeit the kind of light-and-fluffy eye candy that the Academy often ignores. Finally, if anyone on earth watched the Iron Man trailer and didn’t lock it in as one of their must-sees for the summer, they’re completely obtuse. Somebody mentioned the film as iffy because of Jon Favreau. Yeah, I hate guys that can come out of nowhere to make a family classic like Elf. Now he gets really interesting characters and story to work with, with a screenplay polished by two of the geniuses behind Children of Men, starring one of the finest actors of his generation (when not coked up) and featuring plenty of Oscar pedigree in supporting roles. Sounds like crap, for sure. Congratulations to the ignorant cur that posted this awesomely uninformed “Spring Preview.”

    16. alexg March 21st, 2008 at 10:41 pm 16

Too funny…I thought that was Diablo Cody at first too!

    17. Mike H. March 21st, 2008 at 11:08 pm 17

Some of y’all should lighten up a bit. I for one would rather see any of the April movies Sasha listed than any of the big May tentpoles. Ain’t nothing wrong with that.

    18. MarioBorroto March 22nd, 2008 at 12:44 am 18

      In Bruges? Great?

Anyway, this Spring looks dismal but at least we can look forward to Indiana Jones. There’s nothing in that April Must See list that is actually a “must see.”

    19. Alexander March 22nd, 2008 at 1:11 am 19

Forbidden Kingdom looks vaguely fun, though I’m not sold on it yet.

    20. Ladylurks March 22nd, 2008 at 4:23 am 20

My most anticipated films for March and April:

The Visitor (100% RT so far)
      Shine a Light
      Irina Palm
      Under the Same Moon
      My Blueberry Nights

    21. Tero Heikkinen March 22nd, 2008 at 8:05 am 21

Late US releases there. I have Irina Palm on DVD already and I think My Blueberry Nights is also out. They are definitely too old for Oscar consideration in 2009.

    22. Nick Plowman March 22nd, 2008 at 8:09 am 22

      Okay, mine are:

Shine A Light – I see it next Friday
      My Blueberry Nights
Indie Jones – only really interested in seeing Shia.
      In Bruges
      The Visitor
      IRINA PALM!!!!

      Maybe:

      Forbidden Kingdom
      Under The Same Moon

    23. Slavanova March 22nd, 2008 at 9:01 am 23

      You can’t stop what’s comin’.

    24. McAllister March 22nd, 2008 at 9:04 am 24

YES IN BRUGES IS GREAT!! GO SEE IT!

I’m also see THE BAND’S VISIT today which I expect to be one of the year’s best when all is said and done.

    25. Finn BV March 22nd, 2008 at 10:33 am 25

Proman, I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark — it was a few years ago, but I thought it was boring. Maybe I’ll take it out again before the new one comes out and see if it can renew any interest. Perhaps it’s just my dislike of all the hype Crystal Skull is getting for a series I didn’t think was all that great. But who knows — I’ll give it another shot.

    26. elessar March 22nd, 2008 at 1:38 pm 26

      April:

      Leatherheads
      Smart People
      My Blueberry Nights
      Married Life
Where in the World is Osama bin Laden?

      May:

Iron Man (Allen said it all)
Indiana Jones (after years of waiting)
Children of Huang Shi (nice bit of counterprogramming).

BTW, here’s the Children of Huang Shi trailer for anyone interested:

“While I’m obviously not ruling it out, I don’t think Avatar will win Best Picture, and the new preferential voting system is precisely why. Had they stuck with just having each member vote on their favorite of the nominees, it might have won, but something tells me that there are a lot of people within the Academy who are part of the backlash against the film, and will therefore place it at #10 on their ballots. You have to keep in mind that from now on, the movie with the most #1 votes is not necessarily the movie that wins. It’s easy to imagine Avatar will get a lot of #1 votes, but it’s equally easy to imagine it will get a lot of #10 votes as well, and that will really hurt it.

So you kind of have to think more along the lines of which movie will have the least against it, rather than the most for it. The Hurt Locker will undoubtedly get a lot of #1 votes as it is the frontrunner, and while I’m sure there will be those who put it at or near the bottom of their ballots, it seems to me that it will have a lot less low-end placements than Avatar will, and so The Hurt Locker easily has the edge over Avatar in that respect.

Inglourious Basterds also seems like the kind of movie that will split voters. It’ll get a lot of #1 and #2 votes, but probably also a lot of #9 and #10 votes. So I don’t think it’ll win (though again, I’m not ruling it out). Precious will probably get less 9’s and 10’s, but I frankly don’t think it will get enough 1’s and 2’s to pull off a win. I think it’ll get mostly mid-range votes. Same goes for Up in the Air, though I imagine even that will get more 1’s and 2’s than Precious will.

So to sum it up, I think The Hurt Locker, while not an absolute, no-turning-back lock, is still the clear frontrunner in this race. If we’re talking about a potential upset though, why not really factor in the new preferential voting system and try to imagine how much that could end up benefiting a film like, say, Up? While it might not get too many #1 votes, I can easily see it getting a lot of 2-4 votes, and who know? If the frontrunners all develop strong enough backlashes, then it could be that this year’s Best Picture will go not to the movie that is the most liked, but rather the movie that is the least DISliked. Just saying.”
