Dashing from stage to stage, from the Tonys to the Emmys, Neil Patrick Harris has a cummerbund busier than Hugh Jackman’s. EW all but confirms this morning’s Variety rumor.
Multiple sources are now confirming that the legen…dary How I Met Your Mother cad has formally signed on to emcee the 61st annual ceremony, which airs Sept. 20 on CBS. An official announcement is expected early next week.
Harris, meanwhile, is coming off of a rapturously received Tony hosting stint. He’s also one of CBS’ biggest stars, so the cross-promotional possibilities with HIMYM (which kicks off its new season the night after the Emmys) are endless.

Yea, I think the fact that he’s hosting will increase his chances of winning. I know the nominations aren’t annouced yet, but c’mon, he will be nominated. How I Met Your Mother is one of my favorite shows and I think it’s time for Jeremy Piven’s winning streak to end.

AWESOME!!!! I love Neil Patrick Harris, he was great at the Tonys and I hope he finally wins because he is the best part of HIMYM and the whole show is amazing, it should be nominated for more stuff.

Outstanding choice. Hopefully this gives him enough juice with the Academy to actually win a (long overdue) trophy himself.
Been hoping he will win for 4yrs now, at least we have him hosting to look forward to, if nothing else.
Yay! Love NPH! Strangely, I`ve never sene him in that show that made him famous when he was a kid. My first brush with him was Starship Troopers, one of my favorite movies ever. And then Harold&Kumar movies and HIMYM. He`s all kinds of awesome and should do a great hosting job.
After that horrendous choice of getting five reality TV shows host the Emmy’s last year, a piece of rock hosting would be a step up. But NPH is a wonderful and inspired choice. He’s insanely engaging, superbly talented, and a TV “icon” in his own way.
So bravo to the Emmy organizers. I was this close to not watching, but with NPH as host, how could I not?
I’m pretty sure him hosting the Oscars would make for the funniest show ever.
