Brothers

Posted by Ryan Adams On July - 3 - 2009

A young man comforts his older brother’s wife and children after he goes missing in Afghanistan. Based on Susanne Bier’s film, “Brothers”.

Thanks to amanda for sending me on a search for the Brothers trailer that showed up on ET this week. Holy whoa. Wasn’t expecting this level of intensity.

I need to give the original another chance. I like Connie Nielsen and Susanne Bier, but for some reason, the movie didn’t do it for me. This remake looks like it could go either way.

May not seem but it is a tough year for best actress and best actor. It’s difficult to see if the trailers stronger performances, Portman’s and Maguire’s, could make to a top 5. Strong competition. Even so, this a movie that involves a war and that normally doesnt do well at Oscars. But hey, In The Valley of Elah was about the war too and Tommy Lee Jones got surprisingly nominated… Anything can happen and i personally think Maguire is will have his first nomination soon and Portman, robbed in 2004, should get at least a second nomination, if not this year, later.

Judging from the trailer this seems to be almost exactly like the original but just with other actors. I wonder if Sheridan really is able to add something new to it. Else it would just be like seeing the same film but in a different language and with other people.

  4. George July 3rd, 2009 at 1:00 pm 4

So they basically showed the entire movie in the trailer…

  5. ORDINARY COW July 3rd, 2009 at 1:20 pm 5

that’s DISGUSTING. jim sheridan is not what he used to be (My left foot, In the name of the father), now he does this awful remakes. Go and watch the original film.

    doesnt look good

    Two things:

It shows you the whole movie indeed.

It’s not about the war, I think is more about the brothers and the relationships between characters, war is just an element.

Ehhh, just doesn’t particular move me despite the household name cast and director. Nonetheless it is nice to see Tobey Maguire back in a movie again. The man really is picky when it comes to making movies.

  9. andrew July 3rd, 2009 at 3:29 pm 9

Hmmm, I don’t know. Hated the use of The Fray in the trailer (but then again I just don’t like The Fray at all)

  10. MICHEL July 3rd, 2009 at 5:49 pm 10

Natalie looks ferosh. Shes always fierce. A Oscar please.

  11. Danilo July 3rd, 2009 at 6:00 pm 11

Portman might be great in this I don’t know, but I think it would be hard for me watching her without constantly comparing her performance to Connie Nielsen’s. And even if Portman’s performance ends up being really good I can’t imagine hers being better than Nielsen’s. So if Portman will end up being nominated I’ll just end up feeling Nielsen really got robbed, cause her performance was very Oscar worthy. But who knows Portman might be really good.

  12. MICHEL July 3rd, 2009 at 7:42 pm 12

Early test screening gave a excellant to PORTMAN´S performance

  13. haqyunus July 4th, 2009 at 12:08 am 13

but it looks more like a thriller/suspense sort of movie which is totally unlike the original. the original was minimalistic/realistic and very understated.

  14. Joao Mattos July 4th, 2009 at 1:10 am 14

I hate the original movie, and Tobey Maguire looks really bad. But, speaking about bad, weh have U2’s “Bad” on the trailer. So, because of that I will give the movie the benefit of the doubt. Not, it’s because Natalie Portman, which seems great on it.

  15. Barger July 4th, 2009 at 1:43 am 15

The original was equally intense and depressing. Scorsese was able to create his own film experience with his remake turned Oscar winner. Sheridan’s remake appears more literal and almost exactly copied form the source. English-only audiences will be blown away, no doubt. Critics may be bored with the story while still impressed with the performances.

I saw the trailer last night after seeing a disappointing PUBLIC ENEMIES. It seems quite a bit of the plot was unveiled, but I am a big fan of Blier’s original.

  18. anonimo July 4th, 2009 at 4:31 pm 18

    doesnt look good.

also, people believe that actors ‘crying out’ equals ‘great acting jobs’. this is sow sad.

  19. Bobby July 4th, 2009 at 8:41 pm 19

Honestly, this is one of those trailers where I feel like I’ve watched the entire movie just by watching the trailer. It’s just a matter of guessing what happens in the final 20 minutes of the movie.

  20. jorge July 4th, 2009 at 9:18 pm 20

PORTMAN ALMOST A SURE BET FOR THIS, THE AMPAS LOVES THAT KIND OR FEMALE PERFORMANCES AND ITS THE TIPICALLY WAR HISTORY, AND I THINK THIS YEAR THE STRONGEST COMPETITION TO GET A PLACE IS IN SUPPORTING ACTRESS

THERE ARENT FAVORITES ACTRESS FOR THIS YEAR IN LEADING , JUST MICHELLE AND HILLARY(BCS PEOPLE MERYL NOT GONNA MAKE IT THIS YEAR , BELIEVE ME) AND CAREY MULIGAN … NEITHER….

BESIDES PORTMAN WAS TERRIFIC IN CLOSER, THE ACADEMY STOLE HER OSCAR , I MEAN I DONT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH BLANCHETT SHE WAS AWESOME BUT PORTMAN WAS BETTER…

  21. tyler July 4th, 2009 at 11:58 pm 21

anyone have a link to the test screening reviews?

  22. MICHEL July 5th, 2009 at 7:05 am 22

THE TRUTH BLANCHETT WAS AWESOME BUT PORTMAN WAS BETTER…

  23. jennybee July 5th, 2009 at 8:37 am 23

I think the trailer looks pretty awful…I hate those clicheed trailer beats they always do and the way they tell too much of the story. I guess it works, marketingwise, but I’m not a fan.

I haven’t seen the original, much to my chagrin. I’ve loved Susanna Bier’s other films that I’ve seen (After the Wedding and Things We Lost in the Fire) and Brothers is supposedly her best.

I kind of like the grown-up mom look for Portman, but it made me a little wistful for the winsome child she was in things like The Professional and Everyone Says I Love You.

  24. Magaly Solier July 6th, 2009 at 9:42 am 24

..Guess I don’t have to see the film, considering its plot’s been covered in 2 minutes. Also, the trailer is very MTV.

  25. alan of montreal July 7th, 2009 at 3:55 pm 25

There appear to be a lot of resonances with the original, which I loved, and they left out just enough to not give everything away (though in doing so, they made it seem more like a thriller, which it certainly has elements of, rather than as a complex drama, which is really what it is). I was skeptical about the casting–I thought they were all too young–but perhaps I’ll give it a chance. It could be either another In America or another Get Rich or Die Tryin’.

“I caught The Hurt Locker again last night. What a great film. Kathryn Bigelow is probably the most deserving of the nominees. I think if Cameron does pull off the upset, I don’t think sexism will be the problem. I think box office receipts and a concern with AMPAS trying to be “relevant” with the general public will be the actual result. Which brings me to this issue:

I do not understand why some critics out there think that the Academy should pick films that are more mainstream? I heard a commentator the other day saying that the 2008 (No Country for Old Men) ceremony was one of the most boring telecasts in the Academy’s history. Yes, it had their lowest ratings ever. But even if this makes me come off as snobbish, that explanation is a bunch of horseshit. 2007 was a great year in movies, and if LCD (lowest common denominator) critics and audiences don’t like it, tough.

Since I consider myself a film buff, it doesn’t bother me when the Academy pick films that general audiences may have a problem with. Let us be honest, your average film goer usually does not have the greatest taste in the world. And “difficult” films are usually more profound and original.

On a side note, I finally got around to seeing Julie & Julia this morning. Meryl Streep SHOULD NOT win the Oscar this year. That performance was ok, but not her greatest. Her performance in Doubt was a lot better. Mulligan and Sidibe should be the two actresses vying for the award, but that certainly is not the case. Honestly, I think I will be disappointed if Streep or Bullock win this year. Neither performance was that spectacular, in relation to the competition.”
