    (Awaits Afrika to diss Penelope)
    anyway it looks great.

  2. vcb July 3rd, 2009 at 2:34 pm 2

    i’m about to sob…

  3. Afrika July 3rd, 2009 at 2:43 pm 3

telenovela penelopela Cruz is simply nothing but a cinema theatre video vixen. Her acting skills range from looking orgasmic while pouting her lips to, well, looking orgasmic while pouting her lips. A toast to Cruz falling prey to the best supporting actress oscar winner curse. I’ll be skipping out on this movie and I hope AMPAS does the same. BLAH!

  4. Awards Daily Origins: Alfredo July 3rd, 2009 at 3:06 pm 4

Shut up Mookie! You just don’t make sense you know. You are like a robot programmed to respond to something even without knowing why. Look is Penelope Cruz oh oh I have to talk crap.
One sincere question, without even joking. Do you think your behavior is normal? or are you doing it just to piss people off?

  5. Afrika July 3rd, 2009 at 3:10 pm 5

    Alfredo
This is such a fine weekend to pick a fight with you so I refuse to succumb to your argument-prone urges. If you don’t like what I wrote, scroll past it. I think Telenovela Cruz is an awful actress who doesn’t deserve to be called Oscar award winner. That’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it. Sue me!!

I’m officially ignoring you after this comment so bish! you are dead in my book. Bye! bye!

  6. Kay July 3rd, 2009 at 3:22 pm 6

Afrika, you only hate Penelope Cruz because she’s actually talented and can do something with her life. Her Oscar was deserved for Vicky Cristina Barcelona. You’re probably against comedic performances and think they can’t win Oscars. Oh & and SHE WILL get nominated next year for an Oscar most likely. Critics have been full of praise for her in Embraces and she has the Tony award winning role in Nine. Your hate for Penelope and other female actors(Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Hudson, Amy Adams) is very weird.

  7. andrew July 3rd, 2009 at 3:26 pm 7

I find it astonishing that even though you dislike the ravishing Penelope Cruz, you’re going to skip out on the entire film itself. How pathetic.

  8. Afrika July 3rd, 2009 at 3:29 pm 8

Please focus on the movie and it’s actors and stop talking about me. Thanks!!!

  9. Kay July 3rd, 2009 at 3:33 pm 9

Well then stop dissing the actors and the movie(you haven’t even seen it) and we won’t talk about you. If you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say it and also stop making racist comments about Penelope’s name because that is direspectful to other Spaniards everywhere. How would you feel if I said BET Beyonce or something? It’s just mean.

  10. Afrika July 3rd, 2009 at 3:43 pm 10

Pedro almodovar should cast Salma Hayek as lead in one of his movies; he’ll notice the difference.

  11. Awards Daily Origins: Alfredo July 3rd, 2009 at 4:14 pm 11

Now you have to be joking. Hahahahah!! Salma Hayek over Penelope?? My god first Beyonce now Hayek.
You have the right to have an opinion the problem is that you feel the need to have your little rants everytime you want. Hell, the real problem is that you’re annoying and you know it! Even Ryan and Sasha have asked you to stop but you continue!
You didn’t answer the question I did, do you think your behavior is normal or are you doing it just to piss people off? Answer and be a man. (I’m beginning to doubt you are one, you’re too girlie)

  12. Jesus Alonso July 3rd, 2009 at 4:20 pm 12

saw the movie ages ago… not well received on Spain – no wonder – but I thought it’s one of Almodovar’s really good ones. Cruz steals the show, Oscar-deserving performance. Like Woody’s, is written for her, to let her show-off all the talent that sometimes is strangled on movies that limit her range. There’s a sequence in which they play with her looks in which she’s becoming several legendary film screens on a row and in which the cinephile eye can testify it’s an Almodovar rendez-vous to Cruz. Oscar clips galore for her in the movie, too.

  13. dela July 3rd, 2009 at 4:32 pm 13

Jesus, I could see they were channeling several movie stars. Her Audrey Hepburn look is a real winner. She looks stunning in this as well as Nine trailer. Academy will find it hard to ignore so much beauty. And she truly blossoms when she does Spanish films.

  14. iggy July 3rd, 2009 at 4:34 pm 14

    Interesting…

I found the first trailer more haunting than this one, but maybe it’s just because I’m seeing this one after having seen the movie.

Anyway, I find it a bit misleading (though it’s more clear, plotwise). Seeing this, one would expect Cruz to be in every single scene. She’s the center of the story, but she isn’t the same kind of lead as in Volver (I’m trying hard not to spoil anything). Her performance is also quite different, it’s not such a clear acting showcase as Volver, which is why I don’t think she’ll get awards attention unless there’s some residual love for her (it seems it’s not the case :) ).

Anyway, I loved the film and would recommend it to anyone. I think it’s even recomendable for non Almodóvar fans.

  15. glimmer July 3rd, 2009 at 5:13 pm 15

think this the same. so no click through…

  16. Kay July 3rd, 2009 at 5:21 pm 16

She really does look like Audrey Hepburn.

  17. David Casademunt izquierdo July 3rd, 2009 at 5:24 pm 17

I have seen BROKEN EMBRACES three times…it’s a MASTERPIECE.

And Pe deserves all the awards in the world.

  18. Rob Y July 3rd, 2009 at 5:32 pm 18

I didn’t know about this Almadovar film. I saw the pic and said to myself, that looks very Almadovar–very Women on the Verge.

  19. Marcus July 3rd, 2009 at 5:37 pm 19

Does anyone know the name of the Cat Power song used in the trailer?

  20. Sally in Chicago July 3rd, 2009 at 5:39 pm 20

Damn it’s in spanish. Sorry folks, but I avoid “foreign” language movies? You know why? The doggone subtitles pass so quickly, and I can’t read that fast. Therefore, I miss half the dialogue.

  21. ORDINARY COW July 3rd, 2009 at 5:47 pm 21

Penelope wasn’t a good actress some time ago in the USA when she did all those awful movies: “All the pretty horses”, “Blow”, “Gothika”, “Sahara”, blah blah blah and then she makes “Volver” and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and America (including Oscars) kiss her and embraces her. Why? BECAUSE SHE DID BEFORE THE DIRTY JOB? THE TRASH ROLES?

Oh, that is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sad then.

  22. lia July 3rd, 2009 at 5:52 pm 22

    nice

  23. Ryan Adams July 3rd, 2009 at 5:59 pm 23

when she did all those awful movies: “All the pretty horses”, “Blow”, “Gothika”, “Sahara”

If making some messed up movies early in a career meant the end of an actor’s chances to ever win an Oscar, then there would never be an actor who won an Oscar.

(I though Blow was excellent, and Penelope excellent in it.)

  24. vv July 3rd, 2009 at 6:54 pm 24

Penélope was the only bearable thing about Gothika.
I wasn’t too impressed with Broken Embraces by the way, so I think her biggest chances of Oscar attention are still for Nine.
Oh, and she was a joy to watch in both Volver and VCB.

  25. Michael July 3rd, 2009 at 10:42 pm 25

    I think BE looks fantastic.

I knew Afrika would have to go ballistic here, to which I say: We don’t go to your job and knock the Beyonce out of your mouth.

  26. Joao Mattos July 4th, 2009 at 12:45 am 26

Oh, Ryan, at 23# are you serious? Never I disagree with you so much. “Blow” is probably 70% responsable for how I never respect Penelope prior to Sergio Castellito “Non Ti Muovere”. In “Blow” she yells, snarls, bawls, but no acting came from her.

Anyhow Almodovar is one of the Top 5 movie directors in activity, so best hopes for “Broken Embraces”. More than ever since I just finished my country edition for “Almodovar by Almodovar”, a book with interviews with the french critic Frederic Strauss.

  27. Jose July 4th, 2009 at 4:26 am 27

The song is “Werewolf” from “You Are Free”. I LOVE Almodóvar’s music choices, I was thrilled to hear Chan in this trailer.

  28. Chamboosy July 4th, 2009 at 5:06 am 28

I usually cannot stand to sit through an Almodovar film – he just does not do it for me. But Volver really impressed me – rather, Cruz really impressed me in Volver. I’ll watch this, but you better believe I won’t be enjoying it.

  29. Jeff N July 4th, 2009 at 5:07 am 29

I currently live in Paris, where Broken Embraces, or Etreintes Brisees, has already been out for a couple of months. I’ve also seen it a couple of times — and the film looks to be a hit for Aldomovar and Cruz alike!

  30. Lucio July 4th, 2009 at 10:42 am 30

I saw the movie in Spain a few days ago, and i know some people hate Penelope, but sorry guys, this girl is getting better and better every time. She’s amazing in the movie, really, really amazing. Probably her best performance. Brillant in a complicated role to play!!!

And look i dont like her a lot. But she’s great in this i can garantee you that.

    Bye!

  31. Sam Juliano July 4th, 2009 at 12:31 pm 31

I see that attention monger “Afrika” is the new Troll here at Awards Daily. Just say everyone and everything is no good, and then be regarded as a supreme intellectual.

    Right. of course.

  32. Sam Juliano July 4th, 2009 at 12:33 pm 32

Hey Lucio old buddy! How’s it going? I saw Marion last night in PUBLIC ENEMIES, and she was actually the best thing in the film!

  33. bambi July 4th, 2009 at 3:16 pm 33

This looks great! I`m very happy that Penelope Cruz pulled herself up from a string of flops that followed her Hollywood career launch and proved she was worthy of the best Spanish actress hype. Also very nice she won the oscar for non-Almodovar film proving she can shine under the guidance of any director. of course, she and Pedro are magic. Looking forward to her dancing and singing in Nine. She shows some killer moves in the trailer.

  34. jorge July 4th, 2009 at 9:30 pm 34

god!!!!! what is wrong with u people? , penelope not gonna make this year for this or nine, too much reward last year for vicky cristina barcelona , she was good, but marisa n taraji was so much better… this is only the fever of her oscar for this year, so thats why u think u saw oscar chances for this or nine, there are so much better performances this years of the other actresses than her, repeat

is just the fever for her victory this year…

  35. JR July 4th, 2009 at 9:57 pm 35

I don’t think it has anything to do with a fever, but mainly because her character in Nine was highly praised on Broadway. Jane Krakowski won a Tony for playing the same character. As for Broken Embraces, all you have to say is Pedro Almodovar who directed Cruz to her first Oscar nomination for Volver. Fever? I don’t think so.

  36. Lucio July 4th, 2009 at 11:58 pm 36

HIIII, MARION WON!!!! JEJEJEJEJE WE NEVER TALK ABOUT THAT! BYE MY FRIEND!

  37. Fatima July 5th, 2009 at 2:17 am 37

God dammit Afrika we all know how you feel about P.Cruz so can you just shut up for one post with her in it so you don’t have to constantly rain on everyone’s parade. You’re a broken record and you achieve nothing and you make it quite unbearable for everyone who disagrees with you. WE EFFIN GET IT.

  38. Sally in Chicago July 5th, 2009 at 6:46 am 38

Well, I’m sort of with Afrika on this. If you’re talking about which actress is better, it’s Salma Hayek. But she doesn’t make movies that much anymore since she married the $$Billionaire. She does TV guest appearances.

As for Penelope’s acting. She’s not someone I would follow to the movies.

  39. Sally in Chicago July 5th, 2009 at 6:47 am 39

I have no desire to see Nine. Maybe on DVD.

  40. jennybee July 5th, 2009 at 8:31 am 40

This looks sumptious and I’ll be there first chance I get. I wasn’t a fan of Cruz at all until I saw her in Almodovar’s films. She in his films is so far removed from the way she comes across in so many American productions. I did like her in VCB, but she was better in All About My Mother.

    I’m hopeful for Nine, too.

  41. lia July 5th, 2009 at 6:41 pm 41

Penelope Cruz is a much better actress then Salma. Salma’s nom for Frida is a joke. Penelope is a great actress, though the only thing I find overrated in her is her looks. Her nose almost reaches her lips that makes her a bit rat looking, still pretty and she looks gorgeous in this and Nine but not that hot.

  42. Sean July 6th, 2009 at 1:41 am 42

This looks good? It looks like a collage of close ups of Cruz.

  43. Brian Adams July 6th, 2009 at 10:14 am 43

man i am down like a mother-fucking clown. afrika is great guys keep harrassing him though so he keeps it up. if we didnt have people as ignorant as him on here it could get a bit dull at times. but yeah obviously he is an idiot. :) VCB was the shit. i am actually travelling through barcelona right now and its an amazing beautiful city!

  44. Dominik July 6th, 2009 at 10:21 am 44

@ Brian: I am so looking forward to September when I will check out Barcelona for a couple of days!
Have you got an insider tip for me? Something I shouldn´t miss??

  45. Brian Adams July 6th, 2009 at 10:30 am 45

i guess that all depends on what you are into. great nightlife with different sections of the city set aside for all different sorts of folks. otherwise just the architecture is completely amazing and the beaches are to die for. a truly unique european city!

  46. Afrika July 6th, 2009 at 11:57 am 46

    Brian Adams

VCB was shit? why are you attacking me when we both agree? VCB was SHIT…that’s what I said. ;)

  47. Jesus Alonso July 6th, 2009 at 2:55 pm 47

oh, Barcelona is awesome city to visit. And to live, if you’re not spanish.

  48. JR July 6th, 2009 at 3:01 pm 48

    Correction…

Brian Adams said VCB was THE shit. :)

I would love to see Barcelona.

  49. Brian Adams July 7th, 2009 at 9:12 am 49

hahah thanks JR i did indeed say it was THE shit. maybe Afrika needed that stated more CLEARLY.
and Afrika i was not nor would i ever “attack” you over your opinions. I really do enjoy reading what you have to write no matter how much i disagree with it. Freedom of speech man! or in this case freedom of typing.
I completely disagree with Miss California’s viewpoints on gay marriage for example but i totally respect her right to say them and think she was treated horribly for being honest.
    peace out

  50. Afrika July 7th, 2009 at 12:50 pm 50

    JR & Brian Adams

Did someone turn off your sarcasm detector? lol. I INTENTIONALLY skewed the meaning of what Brian Adams said for a good laugh.

“but yeah obviously he is an idiot” – Brian Adams

I won’t exactly call the person who wrote that statement someone who enjoys “…reading what you have to write no matter how much i disagree with it” or someone who is in support of “Freedom of speech man! or in this case freedom of typing”

You can’t eat your cake and have it. Just be honest, I really don’t mind ;)

  51. Ricci July 8th, 2009 at 12:37 am 51

Penelope Cruz is not a good actress. She just always seems so awkward to me. Where’s Paz Vega when you need her?!

  52. Afrika July 8th, 2009 at 2:32 pm 52

    Ricci
Finally, someone on this thread makes sense. But be warned, the Penelope Fan boys are vicious. They won’t stop till they draw blood (I’m speaking from experience).

  53. Ricci July 8th, 2009 at 4:35 pm 53

Is that right? Well, i’ve never been one to give a shit about people that don’t like my opinion so i’m not worried.
