Inglourious Basterds character banners

Posted by Ryan Adams On July - 5 - 2009

basterds kruger waltz 1

These have been around for a couple of days, but they represent some of the most striking work from the Inglourious Basterds saturation campaign so we’d be remiss not to feature them. For me the individual banners are more effective than the cluttered human pyramid arrangement of the Italian poster we saw a couple of weeks ago. Two more after the cut.

i’m so excited about the performance of Waltz!

  2. Ryan Adams July 5th, 2009 at 5:36 pm 2

Me too, Joschi. Christoph Waltz is even gives the best posing performance in these fours banners, doesn’t he?

  3. Joschi July 5th, 2009 at 6:36 pm 3

    yes, he’s a real bastard =)

  4. Joao Mattos July 5th, 2009 at 6:41 pm 4

“Film Comment” put “Inglorious” and Waltz in the cover of the new issue (http://www.filmlinc.com/fcm/ja09/index.htm) and “Sight and Sound” put the movie and Tarantino (http://www.bfi.org.uk/sightandsound/). My “S & S” issue just arrived but I haven’t read it yet. Also “Cahiers du Cinema” in the June issue – July is “Public Enemies”.

    Huge expectations for the movie.

    love!

  6. Ryan Adams July 6th, 2009 at 4:53 am 6

Not surprisingly, Public Enemies is the cover of the current issue of American Cinematographer — and inside it’s back to back with The Hurt Locker on consecutive pages.

Maybe you could transcribe a couple of choice quotes from the S&S article about Inglourious Basterds, Joao?

  7. TAC July 6th, 2009 at 7:11 am 7

I saw a new trailer this weekend. I am getting more excited every time I see it.

  8. Joao Mattos July 6th, 2009 at 7:14 am 8

    I will try Ryan.

What the hell is happening with the “American Cinematographer” site? Only the June issue is there. No news, no cover, nothing about July.

  9. Afrika July 6th, 2009 at 11:47 am 9

Ingloriously not interested in this potential crap.

Any talk about the lackluster performance of Public enemies at the box office?

  10. Awards Daily Origins: Alfredo July 6th, 2009 at 12:19 pm 10

Lackluster? I’ve read a lot of “solid opening” on various sites. Take in consideration that is a R rated film, gangster drama with Ice Age and Transformers behind it.

  11. Afrika July 6th, 2009 at 12:21 pm 11

It had a budget of over 100$ and it opens with 20$. How isn’t that lackluster? the numbers are only going to slide next week.

  12. Ryan Adams July 6th, 2009 at 12:33 pm 12

“Any talk about the lackluster performance of Public enemies at the box office?”

    $26 million opening
$41 million over the 5-day weekend.
Michael Mann’s best opening weekend ever.
5 times the opening weekend of his Oscar-nominated The Insider.
$41 million is more than the total domestic box office earned by The Reader, Frost/Nixon, and Milk iover their entire runs.

It’s exactly what smart analysts were predicting. I’m not a smart box-office analyst, but I was relying on them last Thursday morning when I wrote this:

I think predictions for the 5-day holiday range between $40-45 mil, Sertan. Though Universal’s lowball estimate is $30 mil.

  13. Afrika July 6th, 2009 at 12:37 pm 13

Still lackluster considering the budget for this movie.

The Reader and Frost/Nixon were not given wide release and didn’t have as much $$$$ reserved for publicity and promotion. That’s like comparing Beyonce to Britney Spears (in the vocal ability department…and well, everything else too).

  14. Awards Daily Origins: Alfredo July 6th, 2009 at 12:42 pm 14

Afrika, it made almost half it budget in 5 days. It’s that a failure to you?

  15. Ryan Adams July 6th, 2009 at 12:51 pm 15

“Still lackluster considering the budget for this movie.”

That’s simply wrong. Benjamin Button had budget half again higher (that’s $150 mil, for the math-impaired) and earned $26 mil it’s opening weekend.
Benjamin Buttom is PG-13, Public Enemies is rated R.

Benjamin Button went on to make $333 mil worldwide. Maybe it’s “lackluster” opening weekend caused it to receive only 13 Oscar nominations instead of 14.

  16. Afrika July 6th, 2009 at 2:18 pm 16

Next week, when it makes less than 15$, will prove its FLOP-status. You fanboys just wait and see.

  17. bambi July 6th, 2009 at 2:39 pm 17

Poor Laurent. Cotillard she ain`t and Krueger blows her out of water lookswise. Plus, everybody is talking about Waltz. Only Waltz.

  18. chrisw July 6th, 2009 at 2:59 pm 18

Because Beyonce’s voice is soooooooooooo much better than Spears’s. How about they’re both polished pop stars with no real vocal range.

I’m not surprised by the box office numbers, but I thought it would be a tad higher. It’ll probably make a nice profit for the studio.

  19. Datatape July 6th, 2009 at 9:51 pm 19

Absolutely love the Diane Kruger poster. She looks like she just stepped off the cover of a 40s film noir flick.

  20. hmmm July 8th, 2009 at 12:11 am 20

I’ve read that this is brad pitt’s worst performance of his career and waltz out acts him. Not surprising . it seems like Brad is always out performed by his co-stars.

“I think, of all the films this year… maybe “The Hurt Locker” too… “Up in the Air” will be considered the definitive film of 2009 when we look back in 2019. It’s too raw for people to appreciate now. I’m thinking of 1976 when the Best Picture Award went to “Rocky” over both “Network” and “Taxi Driver” which are far superior films, but “Rocky” struck the populist chord (“Avatar”). “Up in the Air” is similar to “Network” in that regard, because it’s taking a very sharp knife to the world it’s trying to dissect, yet still conveys fairly human emotions. In ten years we’ll be thinking, “how did they not pick ‘Up in the Air’ for best picture?” Of course I’m assuming it loses, but maybe it still has a chance… who knows.

I for one was absolutely captivated and riveted by it, and would love for it to get recognition it deserves. Great Film.”
