I’m pleasantly shocked that Breaking Bad made the drama series cut! It’s head and shoulders above anything else on TV [except maybe Mad Men] but I feared it would become like Battlestar Galactica, The Wire, and Friday Night Lights. Never quite breaking through.
No Big Love in Best Actress??? No Ugly Betty?? No Lost actors nominated?? NO True Blood?? WTF??? This will be the worst emmys ever. The only saving Grace is Grey Gardens.
I have no idea what Christopher is talking about… on the whole, this is a fantastic list of nominees. Go Elizabeth Moss!
Only Jeanne Tripplehorn was in Best Actress. It’s possible that Big Love got one or two Supp. Actress nods. [I still haven't seen the full nominees.] And isn’t it kind of wonderful and amazing that it’s in the Drama Series category?
And I would’ve loved to see Evangeline Lilly nominated in particular. And January Jones. But hooray for Flight of the Conchords.
I am happy for a few shows. But Hartigay over Panquin in Best Actress?? Come on, how many times can she “flash back” to her “almost” rape?? She did nothing special this year. True Blood is one of the best shows this year. snubbed.
I am happy Big Love made it in, but doubt they won’t win, as the emmys are the most predictable show on tv.
Happy for Breaking Bad and Conchords. But over all it seems like the same tired list with a few new add ons.
Family Guy…lol!
And yeah, it would have been nice to see True Blood get a spot, but can anyone really argue against any of the best drama nominees currently in place (ok, House — but even that’s still a good show, if not a great one).
True Blood snub!
NPH in, yay!
Emerson in, yay!
Big Love in…lmao, DLB`s well-reviewed sex tape works wonders!
Drew in, yay!
FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS!!!
Go Jemaine!
I’m now hearing that 30 Rock got a total of 22 nominations, topping its own record for most nods for a comedy series. I must edit my first comment: Breaking Bad is the best drama on TV, but 30 Rock is still the wittiest, smartest, and funniest show in a very long time. Well deserved.
Ian McKellen in, yay! he`s in some Shakespeare shit I never watch but I love the guy so yay!
…the usual suspects

No Jeremy Piven. I hope Kevin Dillon wins. He is great on Entourage.
Battlestar Galactica was a long shot, but I hoped that since it was its last season (albeit, perhaps its weakest), it had a hope in hell. Mary Mcdonnell for Supporting Actress would have warmed my heart.
What surprises me is the lack of True Blood love – 3 noms (casting, art direction, and main titles theme). That’s really dissappointing. Is it too much sex, too tongue and cheek, too much for Emmy voters?
What about Brothers & Sisters, I know its a little soapy, but it never stopped them from going for Grey’s Anatomy! Calista Flockhart, was great in the second half of the season.
But I’m glad to see all the 30 Rock noms, it was a hilarious season! Especially glad to see Jane Krakowski up there.
yay for Simon Baker!!
Jeeez! “True Blood” got only three nominations? Deserves much more, IMHO.
The Emmys really loathe vampire-related shows, don’t they?
The office! Weeds! Family Guy! Jen Aniston! Friday Night lights! Drew Barrymore! Wow, sad January Jones was snubbed though, she deserved it the most out of her category. And the emmy’s are making me hate 30 rock more.
#18
Yes they do. They don`t have bias against aliens (X Files, those comedies whose names I forgot) but vampires are big no-no for some reason.
And we expect AMPAS to be more open-minded towards genre. I mean, they couldn`t see past a superhero costume, what would they think of a vampire?
I am so happy for the comedy! Jemaine Clement, Jack McBrayer, Tracy Morgan and Jane Krakowski…yes!
More noms 2nd yr in row, gives effin Family G the breakthru nod? Ew. As expected, cable pwns drama, broadcast com.
The lopsidedness is kinda funny. 4 of the 5 best written comedic episodes of the whole season were on one show (though I’m surprised the 5th slot didn’t go to Office); 4 of the 5 best written dramatic episodes of the whole season were on one show. Top 2 dramas 16-7 noms; coms 22-9.
Dramatic directing is interesting, though, as 3/5 aren’t nominated for Best Drama; the only other exception, Damages, is snubbed for writing and editing.
LOL that Kiefer gets put in actor in TV movie instead of in Drama. I’ll comment more later after analyzing past noms & such.
I think the world at large is rooting for NPH to win; hopefully that was why the voters knocked away the undeserving billion-time winner.
Kevin Dillon for Entourage! WHOOO HOOO! Absolutely deserves it, surprised The Piven didn’t get another nomination though.
Also a nice shout out to Michael Emerson for LOST, though as amazing as he is I would like to see some love for some of the other actors on that amazing show. Josh Holloway was outstanding this year. I really believe Holloway is going to have a nice film career after LOST, especially if he can get the lead role as Roland in THE DARK TOWER series which is rumored.
At first I was pretty happy with several of the inclusions and not too disappointed with some of the neglected, and then it just dawned on me…
Where the freakin’ hell is THE SHIELD?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
To go out with such an amazing final season and not be rewarded with even a SINGLE NOMINATION?!?!?!?!?
No best show, best actor Chiklis, best sup. actor Goggins, best sup. actress Pounder, etc….
What a complete joke! Jesus, did any of the voters actually watch that series finale???
Ugh.
P.S. Yay for Breaking Bad, Big Love, Lost and Flight of the Conchords!
Surprised that Jeremy Piven did not make it. Well that just gives the open win for Niel Patrick Harris. He better win now.
Despite the acting snubs for Big Love & Lost; & the all together snub for True Blood (not even Anna Paquin?), They still delivered a couple of great surprises. More than happy to see How I Met Your Mother & Family Guy finally get nominated for Comedy Series.
A round of applause for Jane Krakowski, Tracy Morgan and Jack McBrayer. Finally!
Sad I can’t say the same for Mary McDonnell.
Can we say boring when it comes to Best Actress in a Drama? Another nomination for Holly Hunter? really?. No January Jones?, No Anna Paquin?, No Jeanne Tripplehorn?. Here’s hoping Glenn Close takes this one a second time. She’s fantastic on Damages.
Yay for Breaking Bad!
#23 “Also a nice shout out to Michael Emerson for LOST, though as amazing as he is I would like to see some love for some of the other actors on that amazing show. Josh Holloway was outstanding this year. I really believe Holloway is going to have a nice film career after LOST, especially if he can get the lead role as Roland in THE DARK TOWER series which is rumored.”
I think that sex symbol thingy is what hurts Holloway when it comes to awards. He was awesome but I guess that, for Emmy votes, he`s just the shirtless guy or something. I hope he has a good post-Lost career although I don`t see him getting work on the big screen (like Matt Fox does, albeit in bombs).
I do wish the actor who played Daniel Faraday on Lost was been acknowledged before he was killed off… and Jesus Christ, how does John Slattery keep getting nominations over Vincent Kartheiser? They’re both good, but come on… Pete!
Am I the only one who likes Family Guy? The Simpsons is better but I actually like FG, I guess everyone else doesn’t?
The wins are so easy to call:
Mad Men, Grey Gardens, 30 Rock
I’m still trying to figure out John Slattery’s nod. To my memory, he did absolutely nothing last season. Am I wrong?
It does seem Mad Men is destined to win to again, but I’m hoping Breaking Bad or Damages surprises.
I also forgot to give a BIG! shout out for Big Love.
Yeesh.
“Tracy Morgan” nominated for “Tracy Morgan.”
Here’s one category that may prove to be a no-brainer as to who will win:
OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Jennifer Aniston as “Claire” in 30 ROCK.
Christine Baranski as “Beverly Hofstadter” in THE BIG BANG THEORY.
Tina Fey as “Gov. Sarah Palin (Spoof)” in SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE.
Gena Rowlands as “Marge” in MONK
Elaine Stritch as “Colleen Donaghy” in 30 ROCK.
Betty White as “Crazy Witch Lady” in MY NAME IS EARL.
Go Fey! Yes, you can! (Apologies to the other nominees, but the phenomenal impact of Ms. Fey’s performance on viewers last year cannot be denied.)
Is it just me, or the Supporting Actress lineups in the three major divisions (Comedy, Drama, Miniseries/TV Movie) are stronger than usual this year? Would love to see Sandra Oh and Shohreh Aghdashloo win.
Elizabeth Moss is great, but I still think january’s the best on that show, not to mention the usual suspects in that category.
Yay for flighht of the Conchords; but why just jermaine, it feels weird with just one; and boo for the lack of Kristen Schaal and Rhys Derby – although that might just be a bit greedy.
How do they select the episodes for writing? I know I shouldn’t complain about lack of recognition for 30 rock but what about Generalissimo, Funcooker, the Bubble, Jackie Jormp-Jomp, The Ones: they were all better than the ones selected.
Speaking of 30 rock, what about guest stars? I hope it’s not just the boring hacks who get recognised, but hey, I guess it’s the emmys whadjaexpect.
Slattery didn’t have as much to do last season as he did in S1, but the nom probably came from his marriage breakup and his falling in love with much younger Jane.
Kartheiser would have been a much more deserving nom.
The minor acting awards have a ton of acclaim among them.
Guest Drama Actor: 4 (!) 10+x Emmy nominees, Oscar winner
Guest Drama Actress: 2 3x Emmy noms, 1/6 Oscars, 1 10+ Emmy noms, 2x Oscar nom
Guest Comedy Actor: 2 10+x Emmy nominees, Globe winner, 5x Globe nominee…and Justin Timberlake
Guest Comedy Actress: 2 1/5 Emmys, 3/5 Emmys, 2x Oscar nom, 2 10+ Emmy noms (though 1 of those, Fey’s, not mainly for acting)
Drew’s competition in mini/movie Actress: Chandra: 5 Emmy noms; Shirley: 1/6 Oscar noms; Jessica: 2/6 Oscar noms; Sigourney: 3 Oscar noms
Men in mini/movie not quite as impressive: Oscar winner, Emmy winner, Globe nom, 2x Oscar nom, Globe nom, Oscar nom
For the most part, supporting categories seem to be a bit weak to me. Nice that one of only 2 sup performances nommed by TCA is in: NPH (Shield guy snubbed).
YAY How I Met Your Mother was nominated!!!! I love this show, and I hope NPH finally wins, he is an amazing talent and is just freaking adorable.
shit i didn’t know monk was still on, don’t think tony deserves his lead actor in comedy series nomination, again. and how the fuck does charlie sheen and jon cryer keep getting their nominations too?
happy about Lost getting a nomination for best drama series, supporting actor, best writing for drama, do wish Elizabeth Mitchell got a supporting actress nomination. Oh yeah for How I Met Your Mother getting a best comedy seris nomination. for the most part pretty happy for the nominees.
WHAT!!? No Writing Nommination for United States of Tara????? Should I be worried ?
Family Guy is the first animated series to be nominated for Comedy Series since The Flinstones in 1961. That’s amazing.
As usual, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is snubbed in favor of the incredibly overrated Entourage. Isn’t it funny watching a bunch of smug rich assholes get into silly adventures involving drugs and sex? At least on Sunny, the characters never succeed and are never glorified in the writing. That and it’s actually funny.
Oh and Family Guy sucks too.
They did not nominate True Blood due to the inaccurate depiction of Vampires in that show .
~_~
Family guy is not a good show .
Anyway , it’s just the Emmys , it’s not like it’s an award that actually means something .
“Isn’t it funny watching a bunch of smug rich assholes get into silly adventures involving drugs and sex?”
Drugs? Where have you seen Vinny, Eric, Drama, or Turtle ever use drugs?
Post #27 brought up a great snub in Jeremy Davies for his great acting as Daniel Faraday on LOST. The show really does have so many great performances that you overlook some. Ben also brings up a good point with Elizabeth Mitchell getting snubbed as well. I really would like to see the show win Best Drama next year, so it can go out on top. In many ways (and I know it won Best Drama before) giving it to LOST next year is kind of like when they gave Peter Jackson the Oscar for RETURN OF THE KING, kind of rewarding him for the whole body of work. LOST I think can be given the same thing – or maybe a special Emmy. Of course this all depends – and I am assuming – that the show ends on a note that makes sense.
“Anyway , it’s just the Emmys , it’s not like it’s an award that actually means something”
Yea, it’s not like the Emmy is one of the top prestigious awards an actor can win, right?.
Sasha are you an ENTOURAGE fan?
I’ve seen an episode in which they all ate shrooms in the middle of the desert. And an episode in which they bought weed from Val Kilmer as a hippy dealer.
Anyway, my point still stands. I want those characters to suffer. It was marginally better when Vince’s career was basically over after the Cannes disaster but not by much.
It’s also a good thing I cannot appreciate sarcasm when I see it .
The nommed TV films that have warm reviews (mid-70’s) are from HBO. No shock there. Though the two nommed miniseries, Kill/Dorrit, are the non-shows w/80+ on Metacritic, and one’s on PBS. Generation Kill could prove competition for Grey Gardens in the three major tech categories they’re both nominated for (Writing, Editing, Directing…well, so’s Taking Chance, but I didn’t hear anything about it.
Someone noted the “historicness” of Family Guy. Do note that 2 years ago, there were 5 noms for Best Comedy & Drama. Last year, 6. This year, 7. Maybe they want to dilute the honor of being nominated to catch up with the Oscars now.
I’m an Entourage fan Jon. But I missed this season’s opener, so I haven’t been able to follow up on your email yet.
Adrian Grenier is on with Regis and Kelly at this very moment.
It looks like another 30 Rock sweep this year .
Yay for Family Guy! (see? Having more nominees doesn’t minimize a landmark animated nod!)
Yay for Governor Sarah Palin!
Yay for Phil Keoghan’s nod after a big snubola last year!
Yay for Amazing Race 7-peat!
Boo to no other Lost actors (especially no Holloway or Sterlig Beuamon or especially Mitchell)!
Boo to no Lost directing!
Yay for Jennifer Aniston!
Ryan, ENTOURAGE this season is going to be brilliant. The show – and this is not ruining anything – was usually about Vinny getting the next role or trying to find that next role. The show has taken the wise direction this season (it looks like it) of instead focusing on the characters actually growing up and splitting apart (which obviously, naturally happens). It looks like it could be great.
I had a feeling, JR. What can I say? It’s early for me.
I think it does minimize it.
I find it funny that technically 100% of the original shows AMC has come up with so far have Best Drama nods.
I really do wish they would put the SNL performers in a different catogory, it’s just not at all the same thing.
Anyway…
How I Met Your Mother Makes me very happy, GO NPH GO!
Absolutely shocking to see Piven out, 3 consecutive wins and then not nominated? Though it is nice to see Dillion gat the spotlight.
I’m glad to see Charlie Sheen back, but a bit over Jon Cryer.
Lost – Good, the last season better be great though.
Family Guy… eh. It’s a funny show, but, eh.
Hopefully 30 Rock will reign supreme again.
Wow – 4 of the 5 drama writing nominations went to Mad Men. As much as I love that show they could have spread it around a little to Breaking Bad, Big Love, In Treatment, Battlestar Galactica, Friday Night Lights etc. That said, I really like all the shows nominated for best drama. So – kudos to the Emmy’s this time around. It would have been nice to see Battlestar and Friday get some more love, but I think for the most part this experiment of putting 6 or 7 nominees in categories got more interesting shows in as opposed to the boring network shows. I was thrilled to see love for Breaking Bad which is such an amazing show, and especially to see Aaron Paul in the supporting actor category, who had a truly breakout season playing Jessie Pinkman.
As for True Blood – I’m not a die hard fan as many are. I think that Big Love and Breaking Bad had better seasons – and so I sort of agree with this choice. Dexter is a creepy show that is just a touch better made than True Blood. Damages didn’t have the best season, but I love that show. House didn’t have a good season except for the amazing finale episode, but since the academy goes on one episode, I’m assuming that’s the episode that got them in. Lost was great this season. Mad Men is as good as ever.
I’m now just waiting for Entourage to swing back around on HBO-HD tonight, Jon. Looking forward to it. Thanks. Maybe if we have enough fans here, we could do a weekly wrap-up thing. Though I’m not off to very sharp start, am I?
True Blood is great trashy fun, and yummy eye-candy (Mehcad Brooks…*gulp*). But the writing is none too deep and doesn’t give the actors a whole lot to work with. I keep up with it, but it never really wows me.
Hi.
Anyone know is Curb Your Enthusiasm is coming back in September? Talk about a show taking a long hiatus.
Ryan, huge fan of the Entourage wrap up. I just hope other readers on the site are fans.
I really can’t understand why the hate to LOST… I mean, IT’S THE BEST SERIES NOWADAYS, even if ‘Mad Men’ is revolutionary and ‘30 Rock’ is hilarious, but LOST… LOST is not a series, it’s an EXPERIENCE. I hope it sweeps next year.
I don’t think there is much hate for LOST at all Ordinary, completely disagree. And I agree it is an experience and hands down the best show on television (with THE OFFICE, ENTOURAGE, and CURB right behind)
Oh, and because it hasn’t been mentioned yet:
Yay for Chenoweth! So totally deserved nomination. Glad she got one for Pushing Daisies before it got cancelled.
JESSICA LANGE!!!! YAAAAY!
Hope she wins.
She gave the best performance on television of all nominees in my book!
#41 “They did not nominate True Blood due to the inaccurate depiction of Vampires in that show .”
Lmao! :claps:
#44 ” I really would like to see the show win Best Drama next year, so it can go out on top. There`s one tiny little problem – ROTK was the highest grossing of LOTR movies while LOST ratings has fizzled big time and continue to do so. It`s no more a TV phenom and, therefore, not the talk of the town, even though Internet is still abuzz about secrets, etc. But then, they were buzzing about Snakes on the Plane too.
just adding love for the Mad Men nominations, but also am wondering where the hell notice for January Jones is. And after watching several of the Masterpiece Theatre, er uh, Classics, it’s nice that the Brits are in the mix.
One of the reasons ROTK was the highest grossing LOTR movie is because audiences wanted to see how it all ends. Same goes for Lost. I’d imagine that ratings would rise during the final season because people want to know what it’s all about. Audiences will tune in—including viewers who gave up a long time ago—looking for the explanations they’ve been craving for so long.
#68
I don`t think it`ll happen. ROTK is 3 hours in the cinema. Poof. Done. Lost is 20-22 episodes, waiting every week to see what`s next in store (not that everyone can fit it in their daily schedule). Not the same thing. Now, if they killed off the most hated character (Kate), then there may be some slight ratings improvement. Also, ROTK was the shit that year, Lost is no more the shit. There are hotter shows in town and I don`t think that being in its last season will turn up the heat all that much. It had it`s moment when it started but its all lost now (in terms of hype).
Yay for Mad Men and Elisabeth Moss!!! Such a great show and character. I always thought she was much better than January Jones. I also agree that Vincent Kartheiser should have been nommed over John Slattery. His Pete Campbell is amazing.
Also glad to see Jim Parsons nommed as well. Seeing him announce the nominations made me wonder if he is just like Sheldon in real life, though lol.
I think the hype machine is going to be in full throttle for the final season. Also, there are only 17 episodes to watch. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens, but I think its resurgence is going to be a lot bigger than you expect.
The 20 and so minutes of “CSI: NY” episode “Yahrzeit”, are better than all the recent dumb Holocauts and/or World War II movies together (“The Reader”, “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas”, etc, etc, etc), and in future “director’s cut” releases.
Edward Asner deserves to win as Guest Actor in a Drama Series for “C.S.I – NY”, and deserves a standing ovation. Too bad there is no such thing as Best Perfomance By an Actor in a Drama Series in a Single Episode. Gary Sinise deserves some love too.
Flight of the Conchords! Lost! Michael Emerson! Ricky Gervais!
A little sad Elizabeth Mitchell somehow missed out, though.
where the hell is ANNA PAQUIN FOR TRUE BLOOD?
Chuffed to see Fey getting nominated for her turn on SNL, and I hope Drew Barrymore wins Best Actress for Grey Gardens because she’s owed something at this stage.
Surpised ER didn’t get som major love in its last season…
I completely agree with the poster above that says the hype for LOST this year is going to be huge. The show has become a classic. And btw Bambi, you can no longer judge a television show by television ratings anymore – at least a show like LOST or THE OFFICE. Both of those shows are some of the most downloaded shows on iTUNES and both shows also get large audiences online who watch it from the website. They haven’t yet been able to really measure those viewers.
I’m really upset Elizabeth Mitchell and Josh Holloway did not make the cut. I guess they’re too pretty.
Anyway this year the EMMY nominations didn’t totally suck major monkey balls. Just minor monkey balls.
I cheered when I saw Big Love get the nomination but then saddened when none of the actors got one.
Cheered to see HIMYM and NPH get nominations but saddened when none of the other actors or writing were nominated.
Happy that Diablo Cody was not nominated. Guess the EMMY voters aren’t fans of Thai food.
Happy to see This American Life get lots of love.
Go 30 Rock!!!!
im extremely happy for Jim Parsons
also the guest acting categories rulaz! Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell and all others in 30 Rock. (good for the Salma Hayek snub tho, i dont like her
)
no nominations for prison break and i think its a great Fringe snub in every category, especially John Noble with his great performance as Walter Bishop.
Personally, I think Family Guy is one of the funniest, most quotable comedy series EVER. I’ve laughed out loud during Family Guy more often than any of the other nominees, including 30 Rock (which I admit is a terrific series, too).
Joao Mattos, there is such a category and Asner is nominated.
Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series
CSI: NY • Yahrzeit • CBS • CBS/Paramount Television Production
Edward Asner, as Abraham Klein
Poor Simpsons. All these years… And notice how Family Guy got nominated for Best Comedy Series and not Best Animated Series. Just saying, people, just saying…
And being your final season on the air doesn’t really mean a whole lot to the academy, Lost fans, if you weren’t given your due all along. Just ask The Wire and ER of this past year.
And I’m guessing Piven’s little Broadway backlash continues.
Hey, January Jones got some love on the August cover of Interview magazine! There’s something.
Sorry for being off-topic, but I figured you guys should know that L’Ebert is out with a sterling **** review of (500) Days of Summer.
Money quotes:
“In romance, we believe what we want to believe. That’s the reason “500 Days of Summer” is so appealing.”
“The movie, which is a delightful comedy, alive with invention, is about Tom wrestling with that reality. The director Marc Webb seems to be casting about for templates from other movies to help him tell this story; that’s not desperation, but playfulness. There’s a little black and white, a little musical number, a little Fellini, which is always helpful in evoking a man in the act of yearning.”
“Summer remains mysterious all through the film, perhaps because we persist with Tom in expecting her to cave in. When we realize she is not required to in this movie, because it’s not playing by the Hollywood rules, we perk up; anything could happen. The kaleidoscopic time structure breaks the shackles of the three-act grid and thrashes about with the freedom of romantic confusion.”
Oh, and tmoves… Family Guy is only in Comedy Series and not Animated Series because the two do not overlap. Animated shows could submit themselves for Comedy Series, as Family Guy has done for a few years now and as The Simpsons did for a few years in the ’90s, but doing so takes them out of eligibility for Animated Series. That’s why they’re not there.
FINALLY the supporting actors on 30 Rock get some notice. Tracy Morgan in particular has consistently been deserving since the show’s first season.
Thanks Jonah! “Knowing is half the battle…”
Guest Actor and Guest Actress in Comedy and Drama are 4 of my favorite categories. Didn’t mean to leave them off. Have corrected that oversight by adding them to the end of the ist of featured nominees above.
(perennial Awards Daily darling, Ernest Borgnine!)
I guarantee that Michael J Fox is going to win. I guarantee it. Can anyone say Standing Ovation???
I haven’t seen True Blood, but I can guess that the reason it didn’t get any nominations was because the vampire aspect was a gimmick designed to cash in on the increased popularity of that creature in pop culture resulting from the Twilight franchise. The fact that the show ended up being well made was merely incidental.
Ooh, MJF will be hard to beat with that performance, Fivus, but our ol’ friend Ernie had a very emotional turn on ER. You’re right Ryan, those categories are kinda fun.
I watched the noms live and when I saw “Big Love” get nominated for Drama Series, I just assumed it would be in with some other major categories as well, specifically Tripplehorn, Paxton, and Sevigny. I’m a HUGE “Big Love” fan so I was a little disappointed to see that it got ZERO other major nominations. Strange when it was the show’s third season, and it’s made virtually no traction with Emmy voters before.
Best Actress Drama Series is the most f**ked-up category in my opinion:
Hunter and Field are on sinking shows and simply got in out of respect of their Oscar wins/status in the industry. Sedgwick and Close are both fantastic on those shows an deserve to be there. As much as I love “Mad Men” and Elisabeth Moss, and as much as this has been said for months in other forums, she should be in the supporting category. And I don’t watch “L&O: SVU” so I can’t really say much about Hargitay except the fact that this is her 6th nomination in this category in a row, and it can probably be said that room could be made for someone else.
Overall though, I’m pretty happy that there were a few breakthroughs: Weeds’ series nomination making me the most happy, Kristen Wiig’s nom (!), and Rose Byrne (who IMO had a stronger season last year, but still happy she got recognized because she does great work on the show.)
I hope Ellen Burstyn finally wins for her maginificent performance on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
To be fair, Kevin K, the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris predate the Twilight “novels” by 4 years. They’re much better conceived and more fun to read. (at least for me, since I find the Stephenie Meyer books unreadable.) True Blood is well-made because HBO lavishes care and money on a project produced by Oscar- and Emmy-winner Alan Ball, and Oscar nominee Nancy Oliver.
That said, you’re right. It probably got the green light because of the success of Twilight. Good vampire tales are always in vogue though. I”m liking Season Two better than Season One, and HBO always rises to the occasion when they realize they have a cult phenomenon on their hands.
not one damn nomination for true blood?! that´s too much for me!
i mean seriously the show might not be as good as the other nominated drama shows but how could it happen that they didn´t even nominate anna paquin who won the fucking golden globe for her peformance or any other actors of the show… I´m totaly pissed. therefore some episodes of the true bloods first season are very strong and were well directed… sorry guys but I´m a bit in shock right now!
there must be someone in the academy or jury (i have no idea how the nominations are picked) who really hates this show..
let´s come to another show: Battlestar Galactica!!!! such an overlooked show! the final season was absolutetly breathtaking…
somehow the emmys are done for me? no award show has ever dissapointed me this way…
oh lord i just realised that kristin wiig is not nominated? how dare they nominate tina fey and forget kristin wiig? like brüno would say hello it´s kristin wiig?!
good bye guys I´m gonna cry….
oh sorry, kritsin wiig IS nominated! haven´t seen that! now i can sleep!;-)
yep, tmoves, the category is fun because the roles that attract these legendary names are usually so well-written, right?
and Mike, don’t be discouraged. Kristen Wiig was nominated as Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series.
Well like I said, I haven’t watched True Blood. I don’t watch much TV at all, really, aside from the Law & Orders and House.
I haven’t read the True Blood novels, either, because vampire drama was a wholw doesn’t interest me. So maybe I’m not the most qualified to talk about this sort of thing. I’m just relying on my knowledge of pop culture and show business.
#76 “I completely agree with the poster above that says the hype for LOST this year is going to be huge. The show has become a classic. And btw Bambi, you can no longer judge a television show by television ratings anymore”
I hope you are right but I`m trying not to get carried away in case Emmy disappoints us again. And if they give out Best Drama and acting noms and wins, please, pelase, pelase, don`t nominate Fox and Lilly, they are the weakest link, especially Lilly. Fox isn`t that bad but his character has a rock around his neck (Kate) that drags him down. Props to Elisabeth Mitchell (blows boring, charisma-free Lilly out of water), Josh Holloway, Naveen Andrews, Terry O`Quin, Michael Emerson, Jorge garcia (Hugo rocks! he`s so underrated) and Jerremy Davies.
I never really hated Jack or Kate. As a matter of fact I enjoyed how the writers made Jack more whiny and annoying as the seasons went on ON PURPOSE. And truth be told, Jack and Kate did not get more screentime this year then the other characters. I can understand though your annoyance of them. Evangeline Lilly is smokin’ hot either way, though I would take Elisabeth Mitchell over her any day of the week.
Very happy for some noms, very disappointed for some:(
Family Guy for Best comeday?? Really?? South Park getting it would be more of a pleasant surprise!! I have to agree that Simpsons is way past its prime already. I guess Family guy is a substitute for their crap choice of the year (last year was 2 and1/2 Men). But Entourage? Really? Another show way past its prime. Too bad Nurse Jackie wasn’t eligible, otherwise you could see big noms for this wonderfully acted, written and directed show.
Just saw a few episodes of Breaking Bad Season 1, it has the be the most intense show on TV. It’s totally fierce and nerve-wrecking. Bryan Cranston really gives one of the best performance on TV in a while (Since probably the Sopranos). Lead actors noms are great, but Monk again? Charlie Sheen? Wow. Hargitay?
I also thought United States of Tara could grab more noms, esp in Best Comeday and Supporting noms.
But yay for Toni Collette.
But seriously, no love for So you think you can Dance???
It’s hands down the best reality competition program on TV, with abundant of REAL talent, great judges (Mary Murphy!!!!!!), and the BEST HOST on tv: Cat Deeley!!! (no love for her too:(
But not too pissed off (except for the inclusion of Family Guy, now they can always put that tag on their show), for members who didn’t nominate The Wire, Friday Night Lights, Battlestar, the Shield…….
Family Guy… God help us.
Yeah Ryan, it’s true. The guest spots often become the shining moments of a season on a lot of series. It was smart of them to finally include these categories. And the recognition really is noted in Hollywood. Just ask Michael Emerson. That Practice run did him wonders.
[And damn, I just noticed even Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin COMMERCIALS got nominated!]
Go Rose Byrne and Glenn Close for Damages, the best show on TV though bit pissed there’s no love for the wonderful Marcia Gay Harden
The True Blood snub, across the board, is incredibly hard to swallow…
no elisabeth mitchell….
Lots of surprises among the nominations. I’ll be going through each category and offering reactions this weekend: http://tvwithabe.com/search/label/Emmy%20Awards%202009
Also check out Emmy coverage at http://www.tvtango.com!
David Duchovny? He won the fucking Golden Globe for season 1 of Californation and was nominated for season 2. But two Emmy snubs is a roll is a party foul. Even though the show has started its decline, he’s still amazing in it.
No Piven nomination, no True Blood nominations. That sucks. Glad for the Mad Men and Dexter love though. And glad that Jermaine from Flight of the Conchords got nominated. I also just realized they nominated Justin Timberlake. Wow.
Re:JT nom. Consolation prize for losing Green Lantern gig?
How could “Family Guy” (parodical) get nominated for Best Comedy when “The Simpsons” (satirical) has never had that honor in any of its 20 years?
The Emmys really should be shut down. Nominating Family Guy for Best Comedy Series after decades of snubbing Simpsons or even South Park is a slap in the face–not to the producers of those shows, but to any person over the age of 12 who is not mentally handicapped. Family Guy has never been funny or in the least bit original. Sadly, the Emmys are not about rewarding art or even popularity. They’re just rewarding the shows that make the most money and sell the most merchandise.
Yay Flight of the Conchords! So surprised and stoked that Jermaine got a nomination too! I’m surprised with all the nominations it received that Rhys Darby missed out though.
#81, Fivus, I know!
No problem with Michael J. Fox winning, but my fingers will be crossed for Edward Asner. If he wins and doesn’t get the standing ovation he deserved, I will make a solitary one in my house. No, too overtop, maybe I just will imagine that in my mind…
About the omissions, all seems very fair, and what is clear to me is that american TV fiction lives such a bright moment that is remotely impossible to anyone to see everything interestings out there.
Don’t matter how much time the roles have in terms of development. The 10 minutes of Asner in a single episode of “CSI: NY”, or the hours devoted to the unforgetable role of Patty Hewes and perfomance of Glenn Close, and the tons of other examples: IMO fiction TV in USA is living a Diamond Age.
And I know, for a fact, that my favorite TV series – unfortunely – not in a million years receveid or will receive prizes love (“Cold Case”).
But, still, is sad to know that John McGinley or Neil McFlynn were never nominated for an Emmy for “Scrubs”.
Am I the only one who thinks “Breaking Bad” could upset “Mad Men”?
(Anna Paquin should be here.)
Only Michael J Fox for Rescue Me
Congrats Dr. Stephen Colbert DFA!
The Mentalist • Simon Baker, as Patrick Jane
I would love to see the scene from this silly show that go him nominated. There are a number of nominations I think are more about popularity than talent that actually showed on screen.
“No problem with Michael J. Fox winning, but my fingers will be crossed for Edward Asner. If he wins and doesn’t get the standing ovation he deserved, I will make a solitary one in my house”
Well if Asner wins, the people over at the creative arts emmys will have to deliver that standing ovation, which for me sucks. They should move those guest categories over at the big ceremony. Some actors who you would think have won Emmys, haven’t (Angela Lansbury). John Goodman is a perfect example. He lost so many times and didn’t win until recently for guest starring on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Academy needs to let these people have their moment to shine.
Hey, #110 and #111… as far as I know, South Park never submitted themselves for Best Comedy Series and The Simpsons tried unsuccessfully for only a couple of years in the ’90s. Family Guy just got lucky by being brazen enough to try for it and having that coincide with when the Emmys opened the category up to more nominees.
There is a qualitative difference between the shows, but the actual practicalities of Emmy nominating rules make this nomination more understandable, even if it’s indefensible.
The Emmy nominations were announced this morning. It’s always such a fun activity reading that laundry list of B-listers (except for you, Tina Fey – swoon) whose talent for keeping us from changing the channel elevates them above the rest of the dross on TV. Here’s what we’ve discovered, having perused the nominees:
Tonly Shaloub is not funny. But he’s quirky and annoying, and gently, ambiguously “ethnic,” so his role on Monk gets called out. Fine. Two and a Half Men was better when it was called Men Behaving Badly and starred Rob Schneider. It makes Three Men and a Baby look like a David Rabe play…
…Glenn Close, Sally Field, Holly Hunter and Kyra Sedgwick are all nominated together. They should just rename their category “Repository for Respected Actresses Over 40 Who Aren’t Meryl Streep, and Thus Can’t Get Film Work.”
Good lord, check this thing out:
http://www.halogenlife.com/articles/2827-family-guy-is-the-worst-show-on-television
#113 agreed about Scrubs… Neil Flynn is a genius and Johnny C really is the heart of that show
“Supporting Actress” is always crowded, but I hoped to see Chalke get a nod for her work this year (her best in quite some time)
Is it just me or… where the hell is BONES !!!! (only 1 minor nomination, and worst of all, I just checked on IMDB, and… prepare yourself, it is the first nomination of the 4 seasons altogether !!!!
Can you folks explain me why??
Tks al lot!
The Emmys are full of so much fucking fail. If that piece of shit “Two and a Half Men” wins something, I will rip someone’s head off.
And SIMON BAKER? WHAT THE HELL????????? Whoops, no room for Kyle Chandler (the best actor in the best show on tv) but we love Simon fucking Baker!
I love television – and I hate every single thing about the Emmys.
http://hubpages.com/hub/Emmy-Nomination-Aftermath—The-Good–The-Bad-and-The-Ugly
The Emmys is complete garbage. I hate the CBS canned laughter crap that gets nominated every year (Two and a Half Men, Big Bang Theory). Horrible writing and people eat it up.
Where the hell are the nominations for Rescue Me? I mean honestly, do they really think Lost and House are better dramas TV shows then Rescue Me? Apparently people dont like deep, complicated, emotional and well written and acted TV shows about firefighters dealing with real life issues, and would rather watch a bunch of idiots on an island with a smoke monster or a arrogant doctor treating a women with balls in her vagina.
The late Mitchell Warren (#111) So we get it. You don’t like Family Guy. But to insult everyone else who does by calling them mentally handicapped is unwarranted, and I would hope, unwanted on this site. Comedy is strictly a matter of personal taste. I find Family Guy’s skewering of every sacred cow hilarious. I also find 30 Rock hilarious. I find largely ignored British series like Little Britain and Vicar of Dibley far funnier than I ever found Monty Python. Personally, a matter of taste. I love the Simpsons too. I love South Park. Both are deserving of Emmy nominations. Your opinion is respected but be respectful of other people’s opinions too.
I am thrilled to see some Aussies on the list! Simon Baker – I love you! LOL!!!
I just don’t get 30 Rock I really tried to like it but just couldn’t get into it all – so just not my style of show. My comedy show is Entourage now that I seriously love.
I love love love Breaking Bad that is an amazing show and happy to see other people do too. Especially love that the little sidekick -I think Aaron Paul is his name – got a nomination he is a great little actor and his role was so well written and he does it so well.
No love for True Blood my other favourite show on TV along with Dexter (maybe these shows explain why I don’t like 30 Rock).
Tony Shaloub again I thought that Monk would have been put out to pasture for now if not well he should.
Is Kiefer there? 24 this season was much better than last year and deserved a nomination – better than House -ugh!
The Emmys are very predictable in that once nominated they can’t let you go.

Speaking of TV, Walter Cronkite died. RIP.
now i know why sasha changed the name of this blog from oscarwatch.com to awardsdaily.com.
‘How I Met Your Mother’ and ‘Family Guy’ being nominated for Best Comedy Emmy sounds like a joke. ‘Friday Night Lights’ getting snubbed is tragic. I cannot recommend enough how great “Lights” is. The writing, direction, and acting are top notch. Shame it got overlooked, again!
Honoring ‘Lost,’ ‘Flight of the Conchords,’ ‘30 Rock,’ ‘Office,’ ‘Mad Men,’ and the Margaritaville episode of ‘South Park’ almost makes the above mentioned forgivable.
The cast for Battlestar Galactica and Friday Night Lights got ignored. What a bummer.
The Emmys are just as useless as the grammys. Birds of a feather flock together.
Emmy awards not nominating January Jones for her role as Betty Draper in season 2 of Mad Men is just infuriating. Anything from Grey’s Anatomy over Jones? What a joke.
House season 5 was one of the worst drama series seasons in the last 10 years. And it gets nominated?

MediaCurves.com just conducted a study asking 500 Americans about who they wanted to win this year’s 61st Emmy awards, based on the recently revealed nominations. The results found that that Fox’s, ‘House’ is the viewers’ favorite to win the Emmy for the best drama series. The results also found that viewers’ favorites in the reality show category include Fox’s ‘American Idol’ and ABC’s ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ More in depth results can be seen at: http://www.mediacurves.com/Entertainment/J7522-Emmy-Nominations/Index.cfm
Thanks,
Ben
Well I cannot stand the love for House, but with my opinions aside I don’t think it will take home the Emmy for Best Drama Series. I’m predicting Mad Men to deservingly win again. I recently caught a marathon of season 2 on AMC and rewatched all of it. Great stuff! Easily one of the best shows ever.
