Bright Star trailer

Posted by Ryan Adams On July - 22 - 2009

Looks as lovely as expected. Best hats of the year, without doubt.

(Is the tourguide voiceover meant to remind us how pedestrian the English language can sound if the writing is uninspired? If so, effective contrast. You can let go of my hand now.)

Thanks to George at cinemarewind for the find.

watching that “bright star”-trailer tears run down my cheek … this movie is absolutely in my /best picture/ top-10 list!

  2. alex July 22nd, 2009 at 4:58 am 2

The best hats of the year are those of Cheri, costumes for Bright Star are not that sophisticated and brilliant (like in Cheri)

  3. bambi July 22nd, 2009 at 5:38 am 3

Did Abby Cornish gain weight for the role to look like ladies of that time? Her face looks much chubbier than usual.

Looks like Sense and Sensibility/Pride and Prejudice knock off. Not too impressed. Bigelow for female director nod/win all the way!

  4. mark July 22nd, 2009 at 5:54 am 4

this looks dullsville and campion only directed 1 lead to a nom/win holly hunter meg ryan, kerry fox, kate winslet and nicole kidman received no acclaim,i feel cornish and whishaw are too young and cornish looks as if she is being fed her lines, only schneider looks nom worthy and the visuals are dull too.

I am hating this film with every new bit I see from it. Why should I believe this is not one more of those movies where she is a smart, strong woman and he is very sensitive and he adores her and he stands up for her? Oh, he is also poor and others don’t want her to marry him. Is there anything new in this film? I don’t care to find out.

  6. bambi July 22nd, 2009 at 6:17 am 6

    Ditto.

  7. Ivich July 22nd, 2009 at 6:32 am 7

Loving it. God, the visuals are stunning and Whishaw, I need more Whishaw.

  8. ORDINARY COW July 22nd, 2009 at 7:08 am 8

This is not going to be nominated for Best Picture or Director, but it sure will be for actress, cinematography, art direction and costumes.

  9. ponyo July 22nd, 2009 at 7:36 am 9

looks like every other movie like it ever made

  10. Glenn July 22nd, 2009 at 8:32 am 10

lol @ Bambi. “sense and sensibility/pride and prejudice knock off”? Yeah, okay. It’s a genre, doesn’t make it a rip-off. Also, there were plenty of costume period dramas before those two so were THEY knock offs?

mark, All of Campion’s leading women have received acclaim (except for Meg Ryan). Just because they didn’t win tonnes of awards, doesn’t mean the acclaim never happened.

But, we shouldn’t expect more from reactions when it comes to “womens pictures”.

  11. Lily July 22nd, 2009 at 9:41 am 11

I don’t know if Abbie will receive acclaim or not, but she doesn’t look that great in the trailer. I still want to see it though.

  12. Anna July 22nd, 2009 at 10:00 am 12

It has pretty visuals, but the voice over and music on this trailer are TERRIBLE. I LOVE this genre, but this does look like a rip-off of movies that have done it better (Pride and Prejudice, etc). I hate to say this, but it even came off as a bit of a parody to me (a bit like this funny parody of indie films: http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/b080b3abab/my-mother-s-red-hat-w-alicia-silverstone-alanis-morissette )

I can’t imagine it having big Oscar chances. Even the costumes looked disappointing.

  13. Alex July 22nd, 2009 at 10:08 am 13

Cinematography looks pretty amazing. But the films seems like less than what i thought it would be, like its nothing new. And good God the voiceover was lame….”He…was a dreamer…” UGH. And to me…Cornish seemed kinda bland, so i’m not sure about her getting a nom…but we’ll see.

  14. RIOBALDOA1 July 22nd, 2009 at 10:16 am 14

Waoooo!..nice.!..nice trailer!…a sure MUST see this season!…among the TEN??….too early though..but if its as good as im hoping, coming from CAMPION…sure it will be!..

  15. Afrika July 22nd, 2009 at 10:46 am 15

That homewrecker better not get any acclaim from this. It looks like a mess and rightfully so.

  16. Dominik July 22nd, 2009 at 10:48 am 16

I´m not impressed. Looks like a couple of hundred period love dramas I have seen in my life.
But on the other hand: Never judge a movie by it´s trailer… ;-)

  17. George July 22nd, 2009 at 11:10 am 17

I wasn’t greatly impressed by the trailer, and the early reviews are positive, but not glowing.

Its going to be interesting to see what ends up in the ten BP lineup.

  18. Noah R. July 22nd, 2009 at 11:43 am 18

I hated the voiceover as well but I thought the music was interesting. Otherwise it’s nice. Doesn’t look earth-shattering but I’ll probably give it a go. I doubt it will make the Best Picture line-up; people are becoming more and more wary of costume dramas. And rightly so. Just because it looks important, doesn’t mean it is.

  19. bambi July 22nd, 2009 at 12:15 pm 19

#15 “That homewrecker better not get any acclaim from this. It looks like a mess and rightfully so.”

Lol! Eh, she shouldn`t have gotten involved with the married man, but since she was single and Ryan was taken, it was his responsibility to keep the distance. As it is, he wrecked his home by pursuing an affair. Same with Brangelina wrecking Braniston. All hate is aimed at Angelina while it was Brad`s responsibility to be faithful to his wife. And he wasn`t. I mean, a hot chick can throw herself at you but if you say no, what`s she gonna do? Rape you? Then it`s a rape, not cheating.

Well, Reese has a happy ending now as Jake`s beard. He`s so hot and talented, I`d be his beard too. I was hoping for Prince of Persia poster talkback (Oscar nominee in his first action epic role), but nada so far. :(

  20. Jake G. July 22nd, 2009 at 12:31 pm 20

Probably hard to determine what amount of internal structural pre-wrecking Reese Witherspoon had done to her own home in order for for the Big Bad Wolf to blow it down so easily.

  21. bambi July 22nd, 2009 at 12:38 pm 21

true that, but Ryan could still choose a classier way to end it. Inreconsilable differences, anyone?

  22. Ryan Adams July 22nd, 2009 at 12:46 pm 22

I’m waiting for the biopic before I judge anybody.

  23. bambi July 22nd, 2009 at 12:57 pm 23

    Zooey Deschanel as Reese

    Channing Tatum as Ryan

    Leighton Meester as Abbie

    Anton Yelchin as Jake

    ;)

  24. Ryan Adams July 22nd, 2009 at 1:18 pm 24

…and then, during filming, uncontrollable urges lead to Zooey Deschanel splitting with Benjamin Gibbard and hooking up with Channing Tatum.

    ah, The Circle of Life!

  25. Furonda July 22nd, 2009 at 1:37 pm 25

Why do all the retards come out to play in the blog comments section?

For one, the costumes in Cheri are not better and I’ll have you know Bright Star has a much better chance at getting in. The costume designer has received 3 Oscar nods to Cheri’s measly 1.

And darlings, how is it a rip-off of other period films? I didn’t know Pride and Prejudice was the first fucking period film to come out. Campion’s films are excellently unique.

Cornish looks tender and restrained, and Whishaw IMO steals the show.

I got chills watching the trailer. Some of the poetic dialogue is beautiful.

  26. bambi July 22nd, 2009 at 1:41 pm 26

#24 Lol, Ryan, Tatum is married now!

  27. David July 22nd, 2009 at 2:26 pm 27

I was actually pleasantly surprised. I thought the narration was awful, but the music was pretty and the cinematography was beautiful. I do agree that it looks like the typical “young woman standing up for herself so she can marry who she wants”, but for some reason it won me over. I’d see it.

  28. Aleksis July 22nd, 2009 at 2:29 pm 28

“I dun wanna see teh hurt locker cuz I seen war movies before lol.”

I hope Abbie Cornish wins the Oscar on the off chance it gives sexist tennyboppers everywhere spite-induced heart-attacks. ^.^

  29. Kay July 22nd, 2009 at 2:46 pm 29

The trailer was a mess with the narration, but what a beautiful mess. This looks amazing! Abbie Cornish is looking great from that trailer.

  30. Laura July 22nd, 2009 at 3:34 pm 30

“It has pretty visuals, but the voice over and music on this trailer are TERRIBLE. I LOVE this genre, but this does look like a rip-off of movies that have done it better (Pride and Prejudice, etc).”

    My thoughts exactly, Anna.

  31. Xavi Rodriguez July 22nd, 2009 at 3:41 pm 31

First: Beautiful trailer, the actors look amazing and the technical aspects are great. I hope this film rules at Oscar’s next year

Second: About mark comment, Jane Campion only made 6 large feature films and two get three actresses Oscar Nominations: Barbarah Hershey, Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin and the last two actually won Oscar. That’s a good record because a third of her movies made Oscar Nominations.

Third: “That homewrecker better not get any acclaim from this. It looks like a mess and rightfully so.” Ughh, Afrika again your sense of humor. The Phillippe-Witherspoon affaire was so three years ago, we didn’t know the real true story behind it (Other people claim Witherspoon was the unfaithful with Joaquin Phoenix and also Jake Gyllenhaal was the real homewrecker), even when the story is right, the big guilty in this story is Phillippe (He’s the married husband who cheated and lied). And plus: This is about talent not a gossip tabloid, if Cornish is great at many critics said (Variety, Screen Daily, Le Monde, Hollywood Reporter) she should deserve the nomination. Plus: If Angelina did it make it last year…

Last: I hope the film is very good at many people said since Cannes and Melbourne Film Festivals because I love Jane Campion.

  32. Daria July 22nd, 2009 at 4:18 pm 32

Looks amazing. I have seen many, many period films and this does not come across as a knock off. From what I’ve read of Keat’s poems and his affair with Fanny, Campion’s film seems to reflect the restraint, gentleness and love of nature that was part of Keat’s love of life and love for Fanny. I guess for those who love this genre and/or Keats, will love this film, and those who don’t will say they’re unimpressed, because they don’t understand subtlety.

  33. daveylow July 22nd, 2009 at 6:30 pm 33

Jane Campion made one of my favorite movies An Angel at My Table and one that I absolutely hated–Portrait of a Lady. I also wasn’t so crazy about The Piano like everyone else at the time.

I’m not sure what to think from this trailer.

  34. Magically Delicious July 22nd, 2009 at 7:28 pm 34

Hate the voiceover. Wonder if they put that in there because they thought people wouldn’t easily remember who Keats is. Sadly, they’re probably right.

  35. Daria July 22nd, 2009 at 8:30 pm 35

Agree with everyone that the voice over is terrible. Most trailers now a days suck, but the movie is one that I’m really looking forward to.

  36. licketysplit July 22nd, 2009 at 8:47 pm 36

I saw “Bright Star” at the opening night of the New Zealand Film Festival and I can confidently say it is Jane Campion’s most entertaining and accessible film yet, a very real contender for awards consideration.

The screenplay is quite masterful in that it’s a film about poetry that doesn’t come across as pretentious. It’s also injected with plenty of humour and wit. You’re unlikely to hear a more beautiful score this year, and some of Greig Fraser’s shots are still vivid in my mind. But the real stars are Jane Campion and Abbie Cornish, who at the very end of the film has a scene-stealing cryfest that Awards-voters will genuinely fall for (think Keisha Castle-Hughes at the end of ‘Whale Rider’).

  37. dlen July 22nd, 2009 at 10:13 pm 37

Speaking of New Zealand, licketysplit, I’m not sure if anyone has noted this yet but the trailer for The Vintner’s Luck has finally been posted online.

At this early stage they seem to be playing down (ie ignoring) the homoerotic element of the story. Further trailers may reveal more (although we do see Jeremie Renier and Gaspard Uliel topless, mmmm).

  38. alex July 24th, 2009 at 11:56 am 38

Well, Furunda, maybe you are the retard,he,he

Cheri costumes are exquisite, delicious and charming and these looked very simple.

Give your opinion but don’t say negative things about the people who don’t thinks like you, moron¡

  39. Glenn July 25th, 2009 at 10:03 am 39

The Academy likes Campion. The Academy loves British period films. The Academy loves films based on actual events. It stinks of Oscar and I think the trailer is gorgeous. Don’t know how so many of you can write this off without seeing it – you’re a fickle bunch of knobs!

  40. RIOBALDO1A July 26th, 2009 at 11:01 am 40

GLENN..i couldn’t agree more with ya!…The academy has a history of love for this kind of films..and besides that..the freaking movie its not even out..yet!..

  41. Film_twin87 August 13th, 2009 at 1:19 pm 41

I look forward to seeing Campion’s Bright Star when it hits theaters this fall. It’s great to see her back in the director’s chair, and the visuals of the film look stunning. If you haven’t visited the movie’s official site that launched recently, you can find it here: brightstar-movie.com

“The first time I saw The Hurt Locker, I had forgotten who the director was. As the film unfolded I kept saying to myself, “Wow, whoever directed this really has a unique intellect and highly focused directorial vision.” I knew that this film was different, that it had a depth not usually seen in a film set during wartime — but I didn’t know exactly how or why I was experiencing this reaction. When the end credits rolled, my “aha!” moment arrived. “So it’s a woman!” I thought, “It all makes sense to me now.”

Yet, I believe that Bigelow won the DGA — and quite possibly will win the Oscar — not because she’s female but because she did excellent work. Some voters may choose her to make some kind of political or feminist statement, but Bigelow’s name wouldn’t be on that ballot unless she deserved to be there.

Some claim that the dearth of awards recognition for female directors is because there are so few good female directors. To me, a statement like that ignores the fact that bias has prevented more women from getting good material to direct.”
