Ondine-FirstLookTIFF-fullsize-05

Alex Billington at First Showing shares his first look at stills from Neil Jordan’s Ondine.

A lyrical, modern fairy tale that tells the story of Syracuse (Colin Farrell), an Irish fisherman whose life is transformed when he catches a beautiful and mysterious woman (Alicja Bachleda) in his nets. His daughter Annie (Alison Barry) comes to believe that the woman is a magical creature, while Syracuse falls helplessly in love. However, like all fairy tales, enchantment and darkness go hand in hand.

Four more shots after the cut.

holy crap, that’s one beautiful lady!!!

I’ve been hearing about this forever, so long I thought it had already been released!

(for some reason I kept thinking the same thing about “Young Victoria”… weird, huh?)

    That’s some marvelous copy.

    “Secret of Roan Inish” redux?

  5. Mik August 11th, 2009 at 1:42 pm 5

I dont know why (havent followed it much so far) but this looks fantastic.

  6. Joao Mattos August 11th, 2009 at 1:44 pm 6

Ouch! Didn’t know Stephen Rea was part of it. Rea and Jordan nine previous films partnership make one the coolest colaborations among an actor and a director in contemporary cinema.

  7. Paddy M August 11th, 2009 at 2:36 pm 7

She looks rather like Keira Knightley, imo. Not a bad thing at all!

Mmm om nom nom Christopher Doyle om nom nom. Now THERE’S a cinematographer!

  8. SarahSimone August 11th, 2009 at 4:23 pm 8

This is the first I’ve heard about this. It’s looks great! My first thought was also Secret Of Roan Inish but if this movie is anywhere near as awesome as Roan Inish was I am so in!

  9. Yvette August 11th, 2009 at 4:53 pm 9

    My type of movie!

  10. andyb August 11th, 2009 at 5:28 pm 10

Oh my god when I was reading it I thought of The Secret of Roan Inish straight away too

Jordan hasn’t been great this decade, so hopefully he makes a turnaround here – Farrell has an heretofore-untapped talent for dramatic roles and it looks like he might be able to follow up his excellent turn in “In Bruges” with something just as memorable. And I’m a sucker for these kind of films.

    I’m jealous of that necklace.

I thought Colin would turn out to be a real movie star like they used to make after seeing him in A Home at the End of the World. I thought he was pretty good in The New World too.

Ondine is quite a change from the Brave One, isn’t it? He was the wrong director for that imo, but this seems more up his alley. Looking forward to it.

This sounds a little like the novel Jordan wrote – I forget what it was called.

I would like to see Jordan come back from BRAVE ONE as well (though I don’t think he’s had a totally bad decade – I loved THE GOOD THIEF). I didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would – the filmmaking was interesting, and Terrence Howard was terrific – but the ending left a really bad taste.

    New World: Centuries later

    smh

  16. Alex August 11th, 2009 at 7:53 pm 16

Yep, seank, the two lead perfs in that movie were strong and moving, but it all falls apart starting around the last act. The Sara Maclachlan song at the end was a terrible choice.

  17. Tyler August 11th, 2009 at 11:38 pm 17

Farrell is great, given the right role… Tigerland, Phone Booth, In Bruges…

  18. Tufas August 12th, 2009 at 3:31 am 18

    Hmmm gorgeous to look at

    Hope it delivers.

Colin Farrell could be Sancho Panza (and replaced Johhny Depp) in “The Man Who Killed Don Quijote). Rossy de Palma could join the cast.

  20. nic August 12th, 2009 at 8:58 am 20

wow that girl looks so much like keira knightley i almost thought it was a post about london blvd…it looks like farrell is really trying to build up some credability as a serious actor

  21. BurmaShave August 13th, 2009 at 1:54 am 21

My only problem is Farrell has long hair, and there seems to be a quality trend: Short hair (TIGERLAND, IN BRUGES) vs. long hair (ALEXANDER, MIAMI VICE). Though there’s always shaved head in DAREDEVIL, a shit movie that he stole. So maybe there are no rules.

“I think, of all the films this year… maybe “The Hurt Locker” too… “Up in the Air” will be considered the definitive film of 2009 when we look back in 2019. It’s too raw for people to appreciate now. I’m thinking of 1976 when the Best Picture Award went to “Rocky” over both “Network” and “Taxi Driver” which are far superior films, but “Rocky” struck the populist chord (“Avatar”). “Up in the Air” is similar to “Network” in that regard, because it’s taking a very sharp knife to the world it’s trying to dissect, yet still conveys fairly human emotions. In ten years we’ll be thinking, “how did they not pick ‘Up in the Air’ for best picture?” Of course I’m assuming it loses, but maybe it still has a chance… who knows.

I for one was absolutely captivated and riveted by it, and would love for it to get recognition it deserves. Great Film.”
