Indie Spirit Awards Moves Downtown

Posted by Sasha Stone On October - 16 - 2009

No longer will it be the big tent on the beach as the Indie Spirit Awards are getting serious and taking it all downtown.  Downtown Los Angeles will be the venue for the next Spirit Awards (better for some of us who don’t live by the beach) which will now be held at AEG’s downtown Los Angeles’ events complex.

“The change is meant to signal a different way to celebrate and do something that is in keeping with the spirit and is funky and fun and casual,” [Dawn Hudson, Film Independent's executive director] said, noting that this year marks the Spirits’ 25th anniversary.

The Spirits will air live on IFC on Friday, March 4 at 8 p.m. PT.  That means that East Coasters will get the shaft for once.  The Spirit Awards are funny in that one doesn’t always feel the need to watch them immediately, unless they’re genuinely interested in the musical acts, or they’re awards junkies.  IFC plays the thing continuously, so anyone who misses it will be able to catch it again – hardly the agony many of us have to endure when shows like the SAGs or the GGs are tape-delayed.

What film do you think will do well at the Spirit Awards this year?

Hurt Locker was already nominated last year for best lead and supporting so i doubt the film will be able receive nominations again.

      (500) days of summer, definitely, precious and a single man. the spirit awards are only for american film, so an education won’t be eligible.

and maybe hugh dancy for adam, who i noticed is no longer in contention…but someone from in the loop still is…

Michelle Monaghan, Carey Mulligan, Abbie Cornish, and Gabby Sidibe could get in for Best Actress.

Wouldn’t it be funny if all 5 Spirit nominees matched the 5 corresponding Oscar nominees? But it probably won’t happen becuz Meryl Streep is likely in for Julie and Julia.

A Single Man. I just saw it tonight and it deserves every accolade.

PRECIOUS, Up in the Air, A Single Man. Hopefully 500 days of Summer, and maybe Tilda Swinton for Julia and Robin Wright Penn for Pippa Lee (they like her).

I think that if the Hurt Locker hadn’t been elegible last year, they would’ve nominated it for more than 2 awards this time.

Certainly,Precious will have nominations. Maybe along with 500 days, Whip It (it is an indie film technically).

A Serious Man has a tiny $7m budget, so it should be eligible. Michael Stuhlbarg, maybe Richard Kind.

Up in the Air surely would be disqualified by its $30m budget.

Precious, reputed to have cost $24m, will probably get a special dispensation, I would think. If that figure is even accurate.

500 Days, The Messenger, A Single Man, Moon, Two Lovers, Away We Go, Goodbye Solo, Julia, Cold Souls, Pippa Lee, Trucker

“Awards don’t matter. Never have, never will. It is still possible, however, to follow the awards season and enjoy it as a spectator of the politics of Hollywood, which I relish in. As Manhola Dargis said, they’re bullshit but we love them anyway. I do not watch the Oscars to see my opinions validated, but that doesn’t stop me from smiling when my favorite films are recognized by anyone, be it this small organization or the Academy Awards

If you think the Oscars are a serious indication of quality then there are no two ways around it: You are an idiot.”
