Body of Lies, 2nd trailer

Posted by Ryan Adams On August - 13 - 2008

Using virtually all the shots from last month’s 90-second teaser, the expanded trailer for Body of Lies fills out the screen with footage that begins to look like Ridley Scott instead of brother Tony. The David Ignatious novel came equipped with a depth of characterization and sharp authenticity rare to the genre, so it was interesting to see William Monahan treat much of the book like disposable pot-boiler ingredients — in a good way. Scott and Monahan took those ingredients and rewrote the recipe, reshaping the novel into a richer species of thriller. This new trailer captures the atmosphere of controlled chaos and hints at the top layers of the plot’s labyrinthine complexity. If it seems to anyone to be like a dozen other espionage movies of the past few years — have a little faith, ok? There’s a lot more going on than meets the eye. I’m finally feeling this might be better than I hoped — and my hopes were already high.

This new trailer is definitely a large improvement over the first. It’s gone from “Scott/Crowe/DiCaprio, can’t be terrible” to MUST SEE NOW!

Yes, much better trailer. Amazing what a minute can do. ; )

This one intrigues me more. Perhaps it’s the larger picture being shown. Before it seemed like wily cat-and-mouse play between Crowe & DiCaprio with facial accessories and testosterone-infused electric guitar riffs. Now it looks like it’s actually about something (accessories still included).

Better but still not good enough.

I still have no idea what the film is about. This film is going to flop – the critics will be lukewarm and the audiences will be turned off by the Middle Eastern plot. Ridley Scott has lost it.

Definitely better than the teaser. I’m most likely going to see this.

A little better than the first trailer but it’s still a bad movie. Leo yelling that Russell is power hungry is poor scriptage. If that’s not a word it is now. I’m of the philosophy of “show not tell”. I’m sure there was a lot of showing bad Russell behavior but Leo yelling about it is just not Oscar material.

Also, fake middle eastern accent of the guy who does not want to be lied to is a major turn off.

Ridley can make Oscar material of movies like this (see Blackhawk Down), but this ain’t it.

But it’s Leo. Leo has not turned in a non-Oscar movie in a long time. We shall see…

Definitely a ‘been there, done that’ trailer. I still have the faith though.

    looking forward to this.. :)

No, Jack, YOU have lost it. I actually think this one could do moderately well as it doesn’t get on a soapbox to preach. This one’s more, as Ryan said, a thriller. Ridley never lost it, he’s just not always used it. I’ll take Ridley, Leo, Russ, and William over a blogger anyday.

The guy saying he didn’t want to be lied to is Mark Strong, who also played Mussawi in SYRIANA, and his performance has gotten positive reviews by screeners. I thought he sounded just fine.

Definitely agree that showing a greater picture helps a lot, tmoves. Ridley should really refrain from using teasers; they do an immense disservice to his work.

Was that him? I take it back. I thought he was good in Syriana. It’s always a tricky role to have a Middle Eastern accent without having the a bad flashback of 80s-90s action flicks. And I heard him on NPR and discuss these issues and he was so intelligent. Yay to him.

The trailer looks veeery Tony Scott- comes to my mind SPY GAME- so that is not a good thing. Ridley Scott is or maybe was a better filmmaker than that.

  12. Alfredo August 14th, 2008 at 12:05 pm 12

For some reason it reminds me of last year’s “The Kingdom”…I don’t know I guess I’ll just have to see the film cuz the trailer STILL doesn’t look too promising

facial accessories and testosterone-infused electric guitar riffs

that was brilliant tmoves ! :)

OK, I’m tired of this bullshit I’m reading here and in the AD Forums.

Quit basing your judgment from a trailer or TV spot, ok? Can’t we agree that they are glorified film clips edited together to sell whatever movie a studio wants people hooked into seeing?

I won’t give a full speech, but just remember back to 1997 when a great masterpiece called L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, which should have won the Oscar over the boat movie, had quite a syrupy shit-ass feel good trailer.

My point is, before whining if a trailer looks more like Tony Scott than Ridley, research what BODY OF LIES is by going to IMDB.com or hell read the book or something, whatever. Then ask yourself, “Am I interested in that?”

Then consider who’s involved: Director Ridley Scott has shot some good shit from ALIEN to BLADE RUNNER to THE DUELLISTS to GLADIATOR to AMERICAN GANGSTER and so on…..yet on the flipside, he also shot the shitty HANNIBAL and WHITE SQUAL.

And Leo, well he’s done better in recent years of trying to be associated with good projects, and Crowe too (except on A GOOD YEAR, which he and Scott misfired on).

I’m not saying that BODY OF LIES will be a winner or shake the pillars of the cinematic heavens or be a proxy blowjob for you, but I’m just saying look at the Internet folks who are wetting their pants over that trailer for next year’s WATCHMEN who have never read the book and probably by that trailer are assuming a 300-esque CGI ridiculous action-fest or maybe even another THE DARK KNIGHT….

My point is, research is good.

Hey RRA, the issue is this BOL clip is mediocre for me and so much more cause is from the maker of ALIEN, BR, T&L or last year AGNSTR(awesome trailer) like you said, no from his brother (SPY GAME and DOMINO or THE FAN) and doesn´t matter how much I research, that´s a legitimate perception.

I say this with love, because he is my idol, but ten years ago we all wanted Russell Crowe to win an Oscar for getting as heavy as he is now normally. Amuses me.

“I think, of all the films this year… maybe “The Hurt Locker” too… “Up in the Air” will be considered the definitive film of 2009 when we look back in 2019. It’s too raw for people to appreciate now. I’m thinking of 1976 when the Best Picture Award went to “Rocky” over both “Network” and “Taxi Driver” which are far superior films, but “Rocky” struck the populist chord (“Avatar”). “Up in the Air” is similar to “Network” in that regard, because it’s taking a very sharp knife to the world it’s trying to dissect, yet still conveys fairly human emotions. In ten years we’ll be thinking, “how did they not pick ‘Up in the Air’ for best picture?” Of course I’m assuming it loses, but maybe it still has a chance… who knows.

I for one was absolutely captivated and riveted by it, and would love for it to get recognition it deserves. Great Film.”
