OMG I am crying right now. Ma homegurl MoMo is going to be an Academy Award Nominee. OMG. OMG.

I can’t wait to see this. Push is such an amazing book, and I have a feeling this movie will be a fantastic and faithful adaptation.

momo will be a winner, dude.

I doubt Momo will win. Julianne Moore has been snubbed so many times before so I feel like AMPAS will take into consideration will voting. I LOVE MOMO TO DEATH but I would be fine with Julianne Moore winning. She’s done some fine work in the past and I think she’ll be great in Single Man.

Mo’Nique’s performance has been buzzed about since Sundance. Now buzz for Gabby Sidibe is also picking up. Everyone is seriously looking at Precious as a whole not just Mo’Nique revelation. Mother-daughter pain hasn’t won since 1993. It could happen this year.

It won’t happen. The Oscar belongs to Meryl this year. There is no way AMPAS is snubbing the great Streep for Sidibe; no way. Best supporting actress is definitely going to Julianne Moore. She’s been snubbed so many times before so AMPAS will feel compelled to award her this year.

i kind of agree about moore…except her performance in a single man – as nomination worthy as it is, just isn’t big enough. mo’nique has that impactful performance that people will always associate with precious.

i also agree that meryl is winning this year. she is over due (technically she’s the biggest loser at the oscars…) and even if you hated julie & julia, you have to admit she was brilliant…and she got some of her best reviews for that movie…

    9. Ed of We HO October 25th, 2009 at 3:27 pm 9

Jason- I concur, meryl will get her third O this year! that’s all! wait til you see her honest to goodness performance for it’s complicated.

    10. DBibby October 25th, 2009 at 3:36 pm 10

I agree Jason. Having seen both films in the last week and a half, Julianne’s role isn’t big enough (though fun and perhaps enough for a nom given her pedigree and being in 3 films this year) while Mo’Nique is a scene-stealing revelation with a brilliant give-me-an-Oscar scene. She seems destined for the win. I think she’s deserving too. I just hope A Single Man gets more recognition across the board as it’s a much better film than Precious IMO.

Shocking. Just shocking that Precious won in the city where Oprah is based.

    12. Jilda October 25th, 2009 at 4:50 pm 12

Yes, I’m completely sure that is why a film that has won many other awards won in Chicago. Oprah really affects people’s judgement of a film. Never mind the fact that she wasn’t there because the city is all that matters.

    13. dela October 25th, 2009 at 4:55 pm 13

Isn’t this the same movie that did so well at Sundance, Toronto, London film festivals?

    14. ORDINARY COW October 25th, 2009 at 6:13 pm 14

it’s boring because it’s a masterpiece and it can win every single award at every festival it is shown. or not?

julianne moore – what’s up if she gets her 5th nomination? kate winslet didn’t win until her 6th and… do you know Deborah Kerr????

    15. Tony October 25th, 2009 at 8:51 pm 15

Oh, stop, Meryl is done. She is fine. She has two. Good for her.

    16. Afrika is in the building October 25th, 2009 at 9:14 pm 16

      Tony,
don’t kid yourself; Meryl is NOT done. She is only beginning :-) Someone needs to top Hepburn’s record and Meryl still has the energy and talent to do it.

Precious was shown at London fest this weekend and lets just say the reaction is great. What is it about this movie that has people loving it so much.

“I caught The Hurt Locker again last night. What a great film. Kathryn Bigelow is probably the most deserving of the nominees. I think if Cameron does pull off the upset, I don’t think sexism will be the problem. I think box office receipts and a concern with AMPAS trying to be “relevant” with the general public will be the actual result. Which brings me to this issue:

I do not understand why some critics out there think that the Academy should pick films that are more mainstream? I heard a commentator the other day saying that the 2008 (No Country for Old Men) ceremony was one of the most boring telecasts in the Academy’s history. Yes, it had their lowest ratings ever. But even if this makes me come off as snobbish, that explanation is a bunch of horseshit. 2007 was a great year in movies, and if LCD (lowest common denominator) critics and audiences don’t like it, tough.

Since I consider myself a film buff, it doesn’t bother me when the Academy pick films that general audiences may have a problem with. Let us be honest, your average film goer usually does not have the greatest taste in the world. And “difficult” films are usually more profound and original.

On a side note, I finally got around to seeing Julie & Julia this morning. Meryl Streep SHOULD NOT win the Oscar this year. That performance was ok, but not her greatest. Her performance in Doubt was a lot better. Mulligan and Sidibe should be the two actresses vying for the award, but that certainly is not the case. Honestly, I think I will be disappointed if Streep or Bullock win this year. Neither performance was that spectacular, in relation to the competition.”
