Ricky Gervais to Host Golden Globes

Posted by Sasha Stone On October - 26 - 2009

gervais

I am remotely posting the news that Ricky Gervais will be the Golden Globes host! Very exciting. Its as good a time as any to talk about Golden Globes possible ten – divided into drama and musical/comedy. Since I’m texting while driving I turn it over to you readers for now.

UPDATE: Hitfix has quotes from Gervais and NBC:

“Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free reign as a host. I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don’t turn down,” Gervais explains in NBC’s press release.

“Ricky is certainly one of the funniest people on the planet and has provided some of the most hilarious and memorable awards show moments in recent memory,” states Paul Telegdy, Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming, NBC and Universal Media Studios. “His unique comedic style will enhance the only awards show that brings together television and film stars to celebrate entertainment’s biggest night of the year.”

It could be worse–this afternoon I observed a woman devouring (bone-in) chicken while driving.

    Soooo excited for this!!

Very good choice, but this unfortunately means he’s completely out of the running for the Oscars this year. Granted, he was very unlikely a choice. I look forward to seeing what he does. I hope as host he can continue his “couldn’t care less” awards show persona, it suites him and self-important awards shows well.

Just some thoughts, possible 10 for the Golden Globes:

    Comedy-
    The Hangover
    Funny People
    (500) Days of Summer
    Up in the Air
    Nine

    Drama-
Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire
    An Education
    The Hurt Locker
    Bright Star
    The Lovely Bones

    YES! YES! YES!

  6. Chris Price October 26th, 2009 at 4:21 pm 6

Up In The Air will definitely NOT be in the Comedy category.

My guess is they’re gonna go with more than 5 in Drama as they’ve done the past few years, and maybe 6 in comedy:

    MUSICAL/COMEDY:
    Nine
    (500) Days Of Summer
    The Hangover
    It’s Complicated
The Men Who Stare At Goats
Funny People/Julie & Julia (if they do more than 5)

    DRAMA:
    The Lovely Bones
    Up In The Air
    The Hurt Locker
    Invictus
    An Education
Brothers (don’t know why but I feel like this will be the middle of the road, “Great Debaters” pick of this year)
    Precious

  7. Kevin Klaw October 26th, 2009 at 4:29 pm 7

Okay, so no Gervais for the Oscars, then.

With Shankman producing, I hope they get Hugh Jackman back. He was great with the song-and-dance style last year. I’m not sure who else could take his place. There just aren’t that many charismatic musical actors out there anymore.

  8. Noah October 26th, 2009 at 4:30 pm 8

    DRAMA
    The Lovely Bones
    Up in the Air
    Invictus
    An Education
    Bright Star
    alt: Hurt Locker

    COMEDY
    (500) Days of Summer [please please please]
    Inglourious Basterds
    Nine
    The Hangover
    Julie and Julia
    alt: It’s Complicated

    And some odds and ends:
-Both Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon Levitt get nods.
-Melanie Laurent and Christoph Waltz both get supporting nods, with Waltz possibly winning.
-Matt Damon double nominee for Informant and Invictus.
-Meryl double nominee in C/M category for Julie and Julia and It’s Complicated.
-Of The Hangover guys, I’m guessing Bradley Cooper has the best shot at a nod.
-Precious and/or Hurt Locker shut out for the most part.
-Coraline winning Animated Feature. We all know the Oscars will give it to Up, but I’m PRAYING HFPA goes for something more nontraditional.

EDIT: Oh, and Brad Pitt gets a supporting nod for Inglourious. HFPA does like their A-listers, even if they’re not necessarily deserving.

good list ladylurks. However, I doubt Viggo is going to get a nom. lol @ cooper and bullock. The golden globes are so shameless they would probably nominate those performances.SMH

  17. ladylurks October 26th, 2009 at 5:53 pm 17

The Globes gave Eastern Promises three noms, including Viggo and best picture; they gave A History of Violence two, Maria Bello and best picture. Maybe it’s just Cronenberg love, but I’m betting they’ll nominate Viggo again.

They’re musical whores and star fuckers. I fully expect most of the ladies of Nine to be nominated, even if that means cornering the lead category.

  21. Noah R. October 26th, 2009 at 6:22 pm 21

I really don’t think The Hangover will be nominated for Best Comedy. My bet is on In the Loop as the In Bruges dark horse of the year. Plus, In the Loop: Extremely funny. The Hangover: Not funny, although maybe that’s just me…

Ricky Gervais hosting? Well now I have an excuse to watch the whole thing.

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    RICKY IS THE PERFECT HOST
and everyone knows that the globes are more “fun” anyhow

    he is brilliant

this will be the best globes ever

  25. Jason October 26th, 2009 at 8:18 pm 25

Perfect world scenario would have him hosting the Oscars. But, not this year. But this will work for now, but here’s hoping Gervais gets it next year.

For the Oscars, I don’t see Jackman returning, simply cause his one film this year was terrible, and last year’s show had a polarized reaction. Myself, I hated it.

I’m thinking for the Oscars, a good choice (and since Adam Shankman has worked with him on a number of films) would be Steve Martin. Another choice high on my list that there’s a good chance of would be Tina Fey.

  26. Jason October 26th, 2009 at 9:19 pm 26

    ahhh another jason?!

up in the air is definitely a comedy.
and i also think that zooey and jgl will get nods.
and probably bradley cooper. ugh. i hate the hangover.

  27. Chris Price October 26th, 2009 at 11:11 pm 27

up in the air may be funny, but i dont see how it could be considered a comedy

  28. I love blacks and Asians (formerly known as Afrika) October 26th, 2009 at 11:20 pm 28

Whatever happened to that movie Gervais did with Jennifer Garner about lying? did it bomb?

  29. Jason October 26th, 2009 at 11:39 pm 29

really? because i would actually classify up in the air as a dark comedy…there are some serious themes in it but, i would definitely say the dialogue is sharp and witty…the informant is more of a drama than up in the air is.

  30. Alex October 27th, 2009 at 12:07 am 30

Absolutely ecstatic about Ricky Gervais. Best comedy writer in the biz, hands down.

I’m surprised no one mentioned Sacha Baron Cohen for “Bruno.” I doubt he’ll win, but I think a nod is likely.

Everybody is discussing the possible nominees, but I’d like to ask a simple question instead: the GOLDEN GLOBES ARE GOING TO HAVE A HOST?

What does it mean? They’re going to change the format of the show? No right away to the awards? This could be interesting, but could take away from the charm of the awards as well. Anyway, Gervais was terrific last year, making fun of Winslet winning for a Holocaust movie! But he’s always better at the Emmys! There he’s just hilarious! He’s a TV guy and a Brit! I think the Oscars would be wrong, wrong for him. The crowd will react harsh, I think. Anyway, great to see him hosting the Globes.

So I guess he’s getting a Lead Actor in a Comedy nom for Invention of Lying? Hard to believe they’d ignore him after this.

  35. Tobias Roth October 29th, 2009 at 5:01 pm 35

I think having Ricky Gervais as a host of the Golden Globes is a great idea. It is good to hear that it will be going back to being a full award show with acceptance speeches and a host similar to the Oscars. I have not liked how its been the past few years, it is just not exciting. I thought he was great in the invention of lying and he seems to be picking up more and more popularity in the past few years.

  36. Kevin Klawitter October 30th, 2009 at 12:31 pm 36

Well, Hugh Jackman just confirmed he WON’T be hosting the Oscars again this year. It’s not that he doesn’t want to do it again, he just doesn’t want to do it two years in a row.

With Adam Shankmann producing and promising to expand on the musical format, I hope they get somebody to host who has talent in that department. Maybe Richard Geren, John Travolta or Will Smith.

  37. Jezza November 18th, 2009 at 2:51 pm 37

The British Comedy Award nominations are in and nominated for best movie are

Bruno (I gave him like a traditional African name, OJ)
In The Loop (Climb the mountain of conflict? You sound like a Nazi Julie Andrews)
The Hangover (There’s a jungle cat in the bathroom)

Based on the word British In The Loop looks like the favourite to win

What if these 3 were nominated for best comedy at golden globes?
