For Your Consideration

Posted by Sasha Stone On October - 27 - 2009

Now that we’ve gotten a look at Invictus, it is a reminder that the Big Oscar Movies are warming up on the runway.  And in the next few weeks, these films will be seen and discussed, for better or worse.  If all goes well, the last remaining films will make up the bulk of the Best Picture frontrunners.  But with ten slots, that leaves many openings for films that have already been seen and/or released.  Invictus, The Lovely Bones, Nine, and Avatar.  Let’s say for arguments sake that four slots will be reserved for these films.  The other contenders feel kind of permanent, at least right now.  There are other ups and downs still to come – the top ten lists, the critics awards, the guild awards, the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, the SAGs, the DGAs — all of these will shift the course of the race.

Before these movies come out, and all but obliterate what came before, here is a monthly chance to chime in your own “For Your Consideration.”  Long shots, shoo-ins, either way, it’s your call.   The Best Actor race is already crowded, but one name that would really blow my mind would be Ben Whishaw for Bright Star.  His Keats remains one of the most affecting performances I’ve seen all year.  I think he captures so much of Keats — being a morose outsider, ashamed of his economic situation, also kind of non-sexual  in a way.  There is no way he’ll make it in — Abbie Cornish will be nominated most certainly, but Wishaw also deserves attention, perhaps if he were running in the supporting category.

In addition to The Hurt Locker, Jeremy Renner and Kathryn Bigelow, anyone or anything for In the Loop would be the coolest thing ever.

Awards Daily readers, whom would you submit for the Academy’s consideration?

Here are the long shots I’d like to see:

I saw In The Loop at a media screening last night (it doesn’t open in Oz until Jan 2010, wtf?). It was very funny and sharp and I would support an Original Screenplay nom.

  3. daveylow October 27th, 2009 at 9:05 pm 3

Adventureland for Original Screenplay. It will never happen.

  4. Noah October 27th, 2009 at 9:08 pm 4

    (500) Days of Summer for Best Picture and Screenplay.

    Anthony Mackie for Supporting Actor.

Kathryn Bigelow to WIN Director [seriously]

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince for Cinematography, Art Direction, Visual Effects, Costume Design, Sound, Makeup, and Score [one of the most underrated scores of the year so far]

    Coraline for Score.

Where the Wild Things Are for Screenplay.

And The Hurt Locker to WIN Picture.

A SERIOUS MAN for Best Picture and Best Director(s). Best movie of the year by far.

BRIGHT STAR for Best Picture and Best Director. Beautiful, beautiful movie!

Say “no” to THE HURT LOCKER, an insanely overrated, droning and redundant war film.

Keep loving Carey Mulligan and Alfred Molina, but no to AN EDUCATION, a sadly formulaic and unexceptional film.

  13. Marshall October 27th, 2009 at 9:30 pm 13

Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in “(500) Days of Summer,” two of the most fully realized and animated characters that 2009 has seen.

    “Brothers”!

“The Vintner’s Luck”- Best Actress Vera Farmiga, Cinematography & Score
“Precious” (Obvi….)- Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actress (Sidibe), Supp. Actress Mo’Nique….AND Paula Patton!! She also deserves it!

  16. Jake D October 27th, 2009 at 9:47 pm 16

I’m hoping for some HP nods. Art Direction, Cinematography, Supporting Actor for Jim Broadbent.

  17. Robert October 27th, 2009 at 9:49 pm 17

Most of mine have already been said by other people… but I would love to see:

Adventureland for Best Screenplay (so clever and smart and fun! ha. not happening)

Coraline for Best Score (I think that the score is one of the BEST things about the movie)

Ponyo for Best Score (this is absolutely never going to happen, because the academy seems to only like awarding outside awards to Pixar films but Joe Hisaishi’s scores have been deserving for SO long now.)

Melanie Laurent for Best Supporting Actress (she=amazing)

    Best Picture: Fish Tank, WTWTA.
Best Director: Andrea Arnold, Fish Tank.
Best Actress: Katie Jarvis, Fish Tank.
Best Actor: Sam Rockwell, Moon. Souleymane Savane, Red West, Goodbye Solo.
Best Supporting Actress: Kristen Stewart, Adventureland (seriously!)
Best Supporting Actor: Paul Schneider, Bright Star. Michael Fassbender – both FT/IB.
Best Original Screenplay: Adventureland, Police, Adjective.
Best Adapted Screenplay: Where the Wild Things Are.
Best Cinematography: Bright Star, Inglourious Basterds, Tetro.
    Best Score: Moon.

Would also be happy to see Rosamund Pike get notices for An Education: in an often formulaic, by-numbers film, she is always refreshingly offbeat and interesting.

Hey, I mentioned in some comment my wish for Whishaw for supporting since otherwise I have my wishlist of winners in all the categories (comprised of Streep, a string of Single Man/Bright Star wins, and Potter for the techs reserved mainly for action films). Can’t think of any supporting actor otherwise I really feel like rooting for. And hey Christopher Plummer’s going to supporting…

  24. Nick K. October 27th, 2009 at 10:13 pm 24

I know it won’t be nominated, that it’s one of the decade’s best films that will inevitably become a classic in years to come, but Where the Wild Things Are for Best Picture.

I am all for a nod to Michael Gambon for his work in the latest Harry Potter. But, I’m sorry, the score was beyond weak.

  27. Andrew October 27th, 2009 at 10:22 pm 27

It has so far been a terrible year for movies – but one performance I loved which has been forgotten is Hugh Dancy in Adam.

  30. Jerry Grant October 27th, 2009 at 10:34 pm 30

“Where the Wild Things Are” and “Inglorious Basterds,” please!

We’ve got to recognize the ones that will go down in history as 21st century masterpieces (unusual though each may be).

Also, it would be great to see “Away We Go” for screenplay and Maya Rudolph for Actress (which, for some reason, will never happen).

  31. Jake October 27th, 2009 at 10:36 pm 31

Sasha thanks for bringing up Whishaw. He is so overlooked in Bright Star and even though I am a fangirl and my opinion may be biased but the truth is that he is terrific in the film. I dont care about awards recognition (though it obviously helps), but I’d really like him to land some good projects which ensure that we get to see him more often. Being on stage is good and all, but I want more Whishaw in movies. He is so talented, so I am surprised that directors arent embracing him.

  40. Diane October 28th, 2009 at 12:02 am 40

As an admirer of Keats and his poetry and having read many of his letters and biographies, I have to agree with Sasha that Whishaw was perfect as Keats. He managed to reveal Keats’ insecurities, warm-heart, and wittiness while also keeping the poet an enigma to viewers.

I also think Sam Rockwell deserves recognition for Moon. The whole movie depended on his acting, and he carried it out flawlessly.

I don’t think Abbie Cornish is a shoo-in. I think she is a dark horse as well. Loved her in Bright Star.

    For Consideration:

    Campion for Bright Star
    Abbie Cornish, ditto
    Ben Whishaw, ditto
    Paul Schneider, ditto

ok, basically I want a whole bunch of noms for Bright Star

    Sam Rockwell- Moon
    500 Days of Summer- Screenplay
    Adventureland-Screenplay

There are several but these are the ones I’m most passionate about.

IN THE LOOP: Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay!, Supporting Actor (Capaldi)

ANTICHRIST: Picture, Director, Actress (Gainsbourg), Cinematography (Anthony Dod Mantle)

    BRONSON: Actor (Tom Hardy)

THE LIMITS OF CONTROL: Cinematography (Christopher Doyle)

IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS: Director (Terry Gilliam)

  42. Leone October 28th, 2009 at 12:11 am 42

J.J. Abrams – Best Director – Star Trek

  43. Rae Kasey October 28th, 2009 at 12:14 am 43

If Fish Tank had a domestic release date I’d be all about Katie Jarvis and Michael Fassbender getting in. Phenomenal performances in a wonderful little movie.

Right now I’m pulling for Tom Hardy in Bronson and Tahar Rahim in A Prophet to get Best Actor nods. Unlikely, but so deserving.

Michael Stuhlbarg, Best Actor; Sharlto Copley, Best Actor.

Marvin Hamlisch, Best Original Score (The Informant!) – and I feel like Matt Damon needs a little push for ‘The Informant!’, too, even though he is famous the movie is somewhat small and the academy is not generous with best actor/actress nominations for comedies.

Peter Capaldi for ‘In the Loop.’

Melanie Lyskey as best supp actress for Away We Go would be awesome. And Rosamund Pike in the same category for An Education, she was so brilliant.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS – PENÉLOPE CRUZ (’NINE’)!!!

  57. David Krasner October 28th, 2009 at 5:57 am 57

Inglorious Basterds across the board – Pic, Dir, Scr, Supporting Actor for Wentz and Pitt, Supporting Actress for Melanie Laurent, etc etc.

I also feel strongly about A Serious Man.

Costume Design for Bright Star, but that isn’t a dark horse.

  58. Chris Price October 28th, 2009 at 6:17 am 58

Out of what I’ve seen up till now, here’s my FYCs:

The Brothers Bloom for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design and Best Supporting Actress (Rachel Weisz)

Trucker for Best Actress (Michelle Monaghan) and Best Supporting Actor (Jimmy Bennett)

Moon for Best Actor (Sam Rockwell) and Best Score (Clint Mansell)

Big Fan for Best Supporting Actor (Kevin Corrigan)

Is Anybody There? for Best Actor (Michael Caine)

    Antichrist for Best Cinematography

In The Loop for Best Original Screenplay (or is it technically adapted?)

    Adventureland for Best Original Screenplay

District 9 for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor (Sharlto Copley)

Black Dynamite for Best Original Score (Adrian Younge)

I decided not to mention Where The Wild Things Are, A Serious Man, The Hurt Locker, Up and Inglourious Basterds because I feel like all of those are already being “considered” so to speak. But I feel all of those movies are deserving of a Best Picture nomination, for the record.

  59. Bob Burns October 28th, 2009 at 6:35 am 59

anything at all for Star Trek – too good to be completely overlooked. Same for Harry Potter.

Surprised to be posting that I am rooting for Invictus now. It could be an international sensation. Warner is great worldwide and quite under-rated as an Oscar player.

  65. DBibby October 28th, 2009 at 9:02 am 65

I would love to see A Single Man get nominated across the board (Film, Director, Actor, Sup Actress, loads of techs esp. art direction, costume and coinematography).

I’d also like to see The White Ribbon and Lebanon both pick up tech noms (esp cinematography, but also sound for the latter). Samson and Delilah and the White Ribbon for Foreign language film.

I second Rosamund Pike for a sup actress nom, and a cinematography nod for AntiChrist

  66. Noah R. October 28th, 2009 at 9:06 am 66

Chris Price: It’s adapted since it’s a spin-off from on a TV show. I really hope it gets nominated. As long as IFC gets behind it in the FYC ads, it should stand a chance as it will surely get BAFTA and Golden Globe recognition (Hollywood Foreign Press).

  67. Evan October 28th, 2009 at 10:01 am 67

I originally thought Abbie Cornish was a long shot, but now I’m starting to think not.

With Hilary Swank out of the picture, Cornish’s chances are better.

She actually got to meet Tarantino in an elevator and he loved Bright Star:

“When I was in Cannes, I got into an elevator, and Quentin was in there. He’s such a great director, and I’ve loved so many of his films, that I had to introduce myself to him.

I said, “Quentin, my name’s Abbie. I think you’re a great director, and I just wanted to introduce myself to you.” And he shook my hand, and we made some conversation, and he’s like, “What are you here for?” I said, “I’m here for a little film I did with Jane Campion called ‘Bright Star,’” and his eyes just lit up and his arms started going. He’d literally just come from a screening, and he was so excited about this movie. I’ll never forget that moment.”

It’s a testament to her performance that Tarantino didn’t recognize her!

  73. Ivich October 28th, 2009 at 10:55 am 73

Bright Star looks like a certainty in QT’s Oscar ballot. It may just sneak into top 10 with some British loving.

Hugh Dancy for best actor for sure for his role in Adam, his performance is superb

Anvil! The Story of Anvil! to win documentary!
    PLEASE!

Imagine inviting the Anvil boys on stage to share this vindicating moment. (of sorts)

A great way to honor them, this moving film, and also to show that the academy isn’t predisposed to select only sombre and gravely serious topics for their awards!!!!!!!

  77. adorian October 28th, 2009 at 1:52 pm 77

actress = Swinton in Julia and Paltrow in Two Lovers

supporting = Broadbent from Young Victoria

I will be happy with great responses to Bright Star, Lovely Bones, Avatar and A Single Man. Someone please tell me how District 9 and Hurt Locker are managing to get so much credit. Mundane and mediocre movies that I feel confident the Academy members will not acknowledge.

Swinton is brilliant – and in a real different role – in “Julia”.

    But the movie…

    Anyway, she deserves… always!

I forgot to add Joaquin Phoenix for TWO LOVERS to my list. Definitely one of my favorite performances of the year.

That’s a real NGNG pick though.

  90. Alan October 28th, 2009 at 8:23 pm 90

Paul Schneider for Bright Star–just saw it last night, and it was a great film all around.

Up for editing–just for that opening sequence alone.

I don’t know if this will released in the US, but Patricia Clarkson in Cairo Time–she was quietly powerful.

Where the Wild Things Are for Special Effects and for Art Direction

I think a lot of the others that have already been mentioned aren’t quite as long-shotty as people think. It would be cool to see 3 women (Campion, Scherfig, Bigelow) and one out African American man (Daniels) nominated for director, though.

  91. Tobias Roth October 28th, 2009 at 8:28 pm 91

I say Inglorious Basterds could go for Best Picture, Best Director, best original screenplay and possibly even an actor or actress nomination in the supporting category. Christopher Waltz should get the best supporting actor nomination for sure. I also loved Brad Pitt’s role, but just do not think that he has a chance for an oscar with it. Hopefully one day he will get his chance because he has been in a number of really well done movies in the past few years and done an amazing job in all of them

  92. dlen October 28th, 2009 at 10:12 pm 92

Have to agree with the Phoenix love for Two Lovers, one of the small gems of 2009.

Samson and Delilah for Best Foreign Language; Mary and Max for Animated Feature.

  93. Flapp October 28th, 2009 at 11:31 pm 93

It´s true, Phoenix´s work in “Two Lovers” is one of strongest performances by an actor in 2009.
    But we can´t forget Paltrow.
    She´s amazing too.

Both are brilliant and deserve their noms.

And the picture and director too.

  94. Chris Price October 29th, 2009 at 3:42 am 94

I loved Two Lovers, but if I’m not mistaken it was released thru On Demand the same day it was released in theaters, which disqualifies it from the Oscars. Actually I also remember it playing for a week out here in LA back in December ‘08 to qualify it for last year’s Oscars, it just didn’t make the cut. That said, its a great film and all three leads are fantastic.

  95. Pat October 29th, 2009 at 8:52 am 95

Thank you Bobo (post #74) for remembering Hugh Dancy in “Adam”. GREAT PERFORMANCE.

  96. john October 29th, 2009 at 5:45 pm 96

    Longshots that would be nice…
Best Picture: DISTRICT9, STAR TREK, or THE HANGOVER. Hey, Oscar! The reason you were stretched to 10 slots was to get something in that people saw and liked. There has oft been room for this sort of thing, but admittedly, the Top 10 grossing films of the year recently have not exactly been chock full of classics. I assume UP is in, but it would be nice if you had room for one of these three. Sure, you’ll take some shit over it, but these three are going to be well-liked and watched movies for a long time. So, you’ll look good in the long run.
Best Actress: Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan) Or maybe she goes in the Supporting slot, whatever. If an 11-year-old kid can turn a gimmick into a 3-dimensional ________ and actually make that twist plausible, she deserves to go to the Kodak theatre.
Best Supporting Actor: the Zachs. Quinto made a Vulcan into the most emotionally complex character in his movie while Mr. Galifianakis made a pervert into a hero everyone rooted for. Good job.
