Shutter Island, trailer 3

Posted by Ryan Adams On October - 28 - 2009

As fascinating as Shutter Island looks, are we beginning to understand why it might be a less likely Oscar candidate than two other major Paramount productions this season? If it becomes a classic of Gothic horror next February then its thrills will last long enough to see it nominated appropriately in 2010. If it’s simply a great time at the movies from a director who’s this time more interested in entertainment than he is in winning another Oscar, then aren’t we glad that Shutter Island won’t be wrung out through the awards spin-cycle this year? The novel is an homage to mid-century noir with splashes of grand guignol and the screenplay is faithful to that vision. This material was never going to be Double Indemnity. It’s The Spiral Staircase to Shock Corridor, and proud of it. I can’t wait — but I don’t mind waiting.

OMG!!! I cannot wait for this. It looks amazing! I don’t really care about chances for award season… and I think, as you said, Scorsese is more interested in entertainment. The cast is incredibly wonderful: DiCaprio, Williams, Mortimer, Clarkson, Ruffalo, Kingsley, Earle Haley…I just say wow!

There’s no sugar-coating this so I’ll just say it. It still looks awful.

Il looks great… Count me in!!!

I just finished reading the book a few weeks ago, and I can safely say that if Scorsese or Di Caprio weren’t part of this, then it’d just be another run of the mill thriller. It’d be lucky to get an Oscar consideration really so it’s no surprise it was pushed back – it’s all the more better for it really so it will have less weight to do well with the critics. That said, Mark Ruffalo’s character was definitely the most enjoyable in the book.

I`m surprised they are building awareness for this so much even though they pushed it back to 2010. This is already 3d trailer while some stuff that is coming out this year has only one.

I, also, read the book ,and I don’t consider it a run of the mill thriller.

With Scorsese and DiCaprio aboard , as well as , the rest of the excellent cast it is a ‘must see’ for me

this is going to be a great film, this is the first time the spring looks so good

I’m not going to see this to pick apart it’s Oscar chances, I’m going to see it because it will be a good, escapist thriller by a talented group of filmmakers.

Anyone who goes into this thinking it’s just an escapist thriller will be in for a rather strange surprise. I just listened to a bit of music from the soundtrack and, believe me, it sustains a mood of painful sadness and tragedy. I don’t think it’s going to be particularly escapist or entertaining. On the other hand, it does look unbelievably dark (like the book). Dennis Lehane has seen the film and backs that up. And, even if he did write the book, he calls the film a masterpiece. Would he do that if he thought it was shit? I don’t think so. The smart thing would be to just stay quiet and not say a damn thing about it, if that were the case.

If you’re looking at this in terms of Oscar prospects, I think it’s got a pretty clear analog: the remake of Cape Fear.

It’s unlikely to be a serious Best Pic contender, or a likely candidate for director or screenplay. But lead actor? Supporting actress? Supporting actor? Definitely has a shot. Probably art direction and editing too.

  12. austin111 October 28th, 2009 at 9:12 pm 12

However, it is not a remake of anything, which counts in its favor compared to Cape Fear. I’m betting it’s likely to surprise people here who think it’s just another thriller. I’m also not entirely convinced it won’t be moved again.

This movie looks great, is definitley a must see, But…
I Hope Scorsese is done with this and he starts filming SILENCE once and for all…
Daniel Day Lewis, Benicio del Toro and Gael Garcia Bernal?
    talk about the perfect casting…

This movie looks great and entertaining. Cynics like Harry should just take a walk in traffic.

Scorsese, DiCaprio, Haley, Mortimer… count me in.

“Awards don’t matter. Never have, never will. It is still possible, however, to follow the awards season and enjoy it as a spectator of the politics of Hollywood, which I relish in. As Manhola Dargis said, they’re bullshit but we love them anyway. I do not watch the Oscars to see my opinions validated, but that doesn’t stop me from smiling when my favorite films are recognized by anyone, be it this small organization or the Academy Awards

If you think the Oscars are a serious indication of quality then there are no two ways around it: You are an idiot.”
