UPDATE: Here’s a more official version, without the subtitles. (I’ll leave the other one up after the cut, for our Thai readers.)
And you can watch the trailer in crisp HD at Yahoo.
Thanks to Dragon, a version of the Avatar trailer that might stay online for more than 2 hours. With bonus Thai subtitles.

It looks great!!!
Thanks so much, Dragon. This is worlds better than the cam version that bobbed up and down last week.
omg. this week has seen so many good trailers from really good oscar contenders.
the oscar season is really heating up!
This is a little different from the version I saw in the theatres on Saturday. Both versions are much better than the first teaser trailer which disappointed many. It looks like a decent adventure adrenaline-pumping movie; nothing groundbreaking but a fun ride nontheless.
WOW. i am speechless…
You’re welcome Ryan~
Just keep waiting, keep waiting…..
Sorry, but this looks terrible, story-wise. The first trailer looked pretty but was thin on story and dialogue. Now I know why. The best I’m hoping for is a fun but silly ride with great effects. But it won’t be one of the 10.
now im interested, looks beautiful, james cameron has been working on this for to long for it to not be at least good
It still look like a video game to me….
I’m trying so hard to see what everyone else sees but I just can’t. Hopefully I’ll be eating my words once I see the actual film.
Surely there is a way to write an action adventure film without making *every* line and plot development a goofy cliche.
Right? Surely?
I’m glad they added Cameron’s impressive film credits that AREN’T Titanic. You would think for a Sci-Fi film they would connect this film with Aliens and T2 for the movie-going audience. And I agree with arjay, the story looks weak, like Dances With Wolves in 3009. But it’s Cameron and one thing he’s known for is intriguing storytelling.
Sweep at the Oscars???
I am floored. I already was, but now I am again.
The more I see, the less convinced I am. The first trailer left me “meh” on the look. This one left me “ouch” on the story… every single line sounds a cliché…
This looks just as horrid as it always has. I’m going to have to be dragged to the theater to watch this.
This is certainly a much better trailer, and i’m relieved. But when the initial music played, i was only thinking of Elizabeth:the Golden Age. I may see it, but it all depends on how excited i am by the release date.
But, hopefully there’s no romance attached to the film. Let’s face it, Titanic sucked.
Quick Open Question, what do you think of James Cameron’s recent films, being Titanic & Avar. Firstly, i have seen about 4 films of Titanic, and the ideas combined from them basically makes up Cameron’s titanic which is meant to be an original screenplay.
And now with Avatar recently, there have been tidbits of inapproriate plagarism of the appearances of the creatures and the storyline?
“And now with Avatar recently, there have been tidbits of inapproriate plagarism of the appearances of the creatures and the storyline?”
Let’s say Cameron is very adept at taking ideas from many sources and synthesizing them together in many interesting ways that serve his purpose. I don’t read a lot of science fiction, but this year I went on binge with Iain M. Banks and his Culture series. Almost every concept of planetary colonization, and consciousness implanted into hybrid surrogates that I see in this trailer is dealt with in elaborate detail in 3 novels I read this summer by Banks.
I just happened on these books through the recommendation of a friend, purely by chance, and not trying to seek out the inspiration for Cameron’s movie. But if I stumbled across these themes so easily without looking, then I have to assume they’re common fodder for contemporary sci-fi.
That’s no slam against Cameron. I don’t need for him to reinvent an entirely new branch of fiction. But these kinds of story lines are nothing new. And I’m pretty sure I first heard that “let your mind go blank” crack when I was about 6 years old.
But it’s the execution we’re hoping is groundbreaking, right?
yes, ryan i agree. It is the execution which is most important. I just hope he has moved away from Titanic, as its one of the films i loathe simply beacuse its written poorly. I hope is less chessy in any romance elements that may occur.
But, for Cameron, its more the visual effects that will be “groundbreaking”. Some originality in story is essential, and i really don’t want to sit through a lousy film just for the special effects. I did that with Transformers 2. I’m not trying to compare Bay to Cameron, but i just hope that Cameron remembers that its the complete package that makes for a great film. Amazing visual effect can only go so far. I just hope Cameron remembers that, as all we seem to hear so far with Avatar, is how groundbreaking it will be in terms of the visuals. But these don’t make for a great film by themselves.
video is down… boo…..is there a place to upload videos that isn’t as tightass as youtube about killing stuff?
This looks amazing and so does behind the scene video with more footage. They are finally promoting this. IMO, all they need to do is make people get used to Na`vi look before the movie comes out and no problem. They were the weakest thing about the first trailer but now they have grown on me and I can`t wait for the movie. It`s gonna be almost as good as New Moon!
There’s going to be a lot of upset people here at AD when this film explodes in theatres in December and picks up PGA/DGA noms.
Just accept it now that Avatar will become a frontrunner. Up in the Air and Precious may be the critical darlings but Oscar needs a moneymaker and something that will bring in an audience. Tom Sherak would probably be the first one to admit he wants Avatar to lead the Best Picture race.
Amen, qwiggles & cca
” when this film explodes in theatres in December and picks up PGA/DGA noms”
Would not surprise me in the least, Loyal. Happened for the Dark Knight. (Not expecting to see a repeat of the TDK trifecta with the WGA though.)
The logistics of Avatar alone will impress directors and producers. (as with Benjamin Button)
I was kinda surprised Cameron picked up a WGA nom for Titanic. But its success was otherworldly.
What’s a bit sad about the reception for Avatar is how biased some Oscar watchers are. Like, I can say a particular film isnt my cup of tea but yet acknowledge its going to be a contender in a certain category.
But whenever someone mentions Avatar its all “giant blue cat cartoon nonsense, never in a million years.” Get over yourselves.
I’ve always thought the framing of the extended flashback of the actual disaster inside a submarine treasure hunt was a pretty effective way of getting us involved and creating a feeling of investment with the characters. The whole quest for the “Heart of the Ocean” diamond was hokey as hell, and no way should that have worked as a rhinestone macguffin — and yet, for me, it did. Gloria Stuart sold me. She salvaged that part of the story single-handedly.
I believe it was Ebert who said that the diagrams and computer simulation of the sinking in the prologue gave us the perfect primer to understand what the heck was happening with all the unlikely see-sawing 90-degree angle tilt of the ship. So even though the romance and dialogue were like refrigerator magnet love notes, I think the screenplay had a really great structure.
I know this is an Oscar site. And I love it. I think AVATAR will be up for, at least, editing, sound, fx, score, etc.
But, as a movie fan, this just looks really cool to me. Exceptional? Probably not. But I’ll be in the theater seat because it looks fun, and involving; average script, or not.
It looks incredible.
Ryan, your forget to credit Bill Paxton for being at his usual cool.
I’m not sure if it was the trailer visuals or the music that made it so good as far as sci-fi action movies go. You could put that music on a trailer for Harold and Kumar and get me pumped.
Its cool how the Na’avi (apostrophise correctly please people) speak English – it would be a real bummer if they got to the planet and they only spoke French.
The visuals are incredible. I’m pumped.
@ Joolz
dead @ the speaking English comment
LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO You have raised a valid point which I often overlook.
My apologies for dragging the argument over at the Uniquely Monique thread from there to here but I feel like this is a pivotal point to be made. How is the fact that these Aliens are able to speak English with an American accent different from Precious having fantasies about being in arthouse foreign films? The fact that the Na’avi are speaking American English hasn’t been called “distracting” by anyone so I’m just wondering.
This looks worse every day – should revert back to “no dialogue” trailer.
FERNGULLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Oscars do need a megablockbuster nominee and winner and Avatar is the only remaining movie that has a shot at huge numbers. It`s not going to happen with Presh, UITA, LB,Invictus, etc since none of them has potential for $200 mio domestically let alone more than that. So this is a major contender among genre blockbusters with good critical support (ST, HBP, D9 due to its small budget). However, after TDK snub, i`m not sold on BP nom just yet. AMPAS are really weird. They nominated Babe (and caught a lot of flack for it from industry people) but ignored TDK for whose nomination industry, media and fans alike were clamoring. So I`m waiting for first reactions to the whole thing.
This movie will make 14 kajillion dollars at the box office, it will be a phenomenon no less universal than Boney M, and it will suck just as much.
“The fact that the Na’avi are speaking American English hasn’t been called “distracting” by anyone so I’m just wondering.”
That’s because no one’s seen the movie yet. Just like YOU haven’t seen Precious.
There`s probably an explanation why they speak English because Cameron said they created a Na`vi language. So their language will be heard at some point in the movie. They couldn`t do the neat D9 trick where everyone speaks their language and understands the other side at the same time. That would be a rip off.
“How is the fact that these Aliens are able to speak English with an American accent different from Precious having fantasies about being in arthouse foreign films?”
By that logic, Afrika, how come Harvey Milk didn’t just dodge the assassins bullets like Neo in The Matrix?
There’s a difference between suspension of disbelief in fantasy/sci-fi and willingness to overlook narrative anachronisms in movies that are trying to accurately depict a grim reality.
But every single detail of “reality” can’t be accurate when you are putting it on celluloid in a bid to make a movie. Film making is an artform; you are trying to convey something to the audience so certain portions of this “reality” have to be altered in order to get the message across.
Besides, filmfemme has already confirmed that a PBS station did show movies like “Metropolis”. Thus, a lot of children in the “ghetto” might have come across these foreign films. They might not understand it or watch it in its entirety but the images might definitely fascinate them and/or linger in their minds for a long period of time.
You better sprinkle those smileys.
What’s that suppose to mean Ryan?
it’s like, “smile when you say that, pardner.”
I notice that you’re struggling to stay friendly during these recent showdowns in the saloon. I appreciate the effort.
Thanks Ryan
Do not want.
Hey, Ryan, since na`vi are cat people, if the trailer goes well with your cat, it`s a BP winner. I`m very curious what his reaction was. Please, show him and let us know!
What is the last song played on the international trailer?
Have anyone read the screenplay of this movie? I think Ryan, if you are criticizing the screenplay of Invictus (which could be bad, haven’t read it yet) , I think you can still hope the execution will be good eh?
Also, is this trailer only playing in the US? can’t watch this trailer even from canada…..
Wait, now it’s working with the lovely Thai subtitles:)
I think both Invictus and Avatar seem to be full of cliches.
Invictus has this “true story” feel, and Avatar is cliches cloaked with a futuristic storyline with very high tech CGI.
I hope they are both better than the trailers.
I haven’t said anything about the script for Invictus, Marshall. The draft I have is dated 2007 and until I can see some clips to know if the movie matches up with what I’ve read then it wouldn’t be right to say what I think.
The script for Avatar is pretty tightly guarded. I haven’t seen it.
The screenplay I was talking about in comment #25 was Titanic.
In another topic we were talking about the script for Hereafter, and the version I’ve read looks like near final draft.
“You’re not in Kansas anymore!”
Seriously? This is Avatar? This is the MASSIVE LOVE STORY EPIC that will sweep the oscars? This is nuts. Insane. Like seriously, no.
But really. It isn’t Kansas. Even the Na’vi cats will say so. In a kansas accent to boot.
