Is this the earliest a real FYC ad has come out? It seems WAY too early! Maybe their worried the movie is already being forgotten?

  2. The Natural November 1st, 2009 at 5:46 pm 2

BRILLIANT. Go Focus and “A Serious Man!”

  3. bambi November 1st, 2009 at 5:47 pm 3

Ok, this isn`t Tobey McGuire but he looks like fat Tobey McGuire to a T! Who is he?

  4. The Natural November 1st, 2009 at 5:49 pm 4

Are you serious? It’s lead actor Michael Stuhlbarg, extreme Best Actor dark horse. See the damn movie, man!

  5. Kay November 1st, 2009 at 6:04 pm 5

I’m dying to see this film.

  6. ladylurks November 1st, 2009 at 6:07 pm 6

Good job, Focus! – I knew they’d promote the hell out of A Serious Man. Since Taking Woodstock tanked, it’s their only real Oscar horse.

LOL, I love Michael Stuhlbarg: “Even if you can’t figure it out, you’re still responsible for it on the midterm.”

  7. Gustavo H.R. November 1st, 2009 at 6:07 pm 7

    Tobey Maguire? LMAO.

  8. bambi November 1st, 2009 at 6:07 pm 8

he looks like fat Tobey. I didn`t know the movie is in theaters already (all I hear about is Paranormal Activity which was a pretty good movie). It would be nice if he is nominated. he, Firth, Mortensen, renner and Clooney look strong unless Morgan or Damon go lead.

  9. Ryan Adams November 1st, 2009 at 6:15 pm 9

“…unless Morgan or Damon go lead.”

They have fairly equivalent screen time, but you feel Mandela’s presence in every scene. No way is Damon getting a lead nomination for Invictus, and not much chance that anyone would perceive Freeman’s role as supporting.

  10. Retlaw Kciuq November 1st, 2009 at 6:26 pm 10

But I didn’t really detect Mandela out of Freeman’s performance in the trailer, Ryan. I just witnessed Morgan Freeman.

Matt Damon at least showed he was playing a South African with a convincing dialect.

    Just my .02

  11. The Natural November 1st, 2009 at 6:35 pm 11

Bambi, the movie came out about a month ago.

  12. Bill November 1st, 2009 at 6:35 pm 12

certainly should be nominated for best picture, fantastic movie

  13. Kevin Klawitter November 1st, 2009 at 7:00 pm 13

For those of you who still think Morgan Freeman’s accent is inauthentic, here’s a link to his 2004 Oscar Acceptance speech:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHQdXGfOdQQ
Here is the trailer for “Invictus”:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6jJN_NjV-Y&hd=1

Now, can you seriously say it’s the exact same voice?
All I can say is that whoever made the trailer made a bit of a mistake bookending it with the V.O. of the poem, as that sounds most like Morgan and least like Nelson. On the other hand, maybe Morgan is pulling an Orson Welles and recording narration for the movie IN ADDITION to acting in it.

  14. bambi November 1st, 2009 at 7:03 pm 14

I`ll see where it`s playing. I had to scout for Hurt Locker too. Damn limited releases.

  15. Ryan Adams November 1st, 2009 at 7:35 pm 15

I agree with you that it looks from the trailer than Damon is giving a more immersive performance, Retlaw.

But (a) Matt’s role is being disproportionately highlighted in the trailer because he’s the bigger audience magnet. Mandela’s personality dominates the script. And (b) we’re not really talking about who is doing “more acting” or whose accent is better, are we?

We’re talking about which character literally “leads” the other character through the story line of the movie. If quality of acting were the only issue, then Casey Affleck and Javier Bardem would have both been nominated for Best Actor. Heck, for that matter, if we’re only talking about who gave the best performance in each of his movies, then Morgan Freeman would have already have two Best Actor Oscars for The Shawshank Redemption and Million Dollar Baby.

  16. allen November 1st, 2009 at 7:53 pm 16

this movie is overrated, I found it to be forgettable. the coens are making the same movie over and over. no country was their peak

  17. Tyler November 1st, 2009 at 8:17 pm 17

Best movie of the year so far

  18. m1 November 1st, 2009 at 8:46 pm 18

    Cool.

  19. Leone November 1st, 2009 at 8:53 pm 19

Interested to see it but do think it’s a little weird to be putting the cart before the horse. FYC ads and they’ve grossed like $3 million. Oscars are in March, I’d think they would want to conserve a bit.

  20. HaroldsMaude November 1st, 2009 at 9:21 pm 20

I can see (and hope for) Michael Stuhlbarg as Best Actor and maybe a writing nomination, here. I loved the film – a lot – but still can’t see it making into Best Film, even with 10. No, with 10 maybe I can.

  21. Cinebrooding November 1st, 2009 at 9:26 pm 21

This is brilliant. Times like these are when I think “limited” release should be a crime.

  22. Cameron November 1st, 2009 at 9:34 pm 22

Seriously indeed. If only the Academy had held out 2 more years, it might actually have a shot at winning…

  23. Ugolin November 1st, 2009 at 10:15 pm 23

Just came back from a 7:30 showing of this film. Still need to sleep on it and give it some settling time but I can give you an early word and say it was definately brilliant. I would agree with the “FYC”. This and The White Ribbon are the only films i’ve seen this year so far that are best picture material.

  24. Daren November 1st, 2009 at 10:17 pm 24

I just saw the movie and was just amazed! It really is one of their best works, the use of sound alone makes it something to behold.

  25. Justine Smith November 1st, 2009 at 10:24 pm 25

At least it’s for a seriously good movie. I’m so clever :/

  26. Vince November 1st, 2009 at 10:55 pm 26

I here too, was not impressed with Morgan Freeman in the trailer. He looked just like a lot of people are saying…looks like he’s playing himself !

  27. Jake November 1st, 2009 at 10:57 pm 27

I saw this movie two nights ago and I have to say that I was absolutely stunned. It’s incredible. If it doesn’t get a Best Pic nomination I will go crazy on someone.

  28. Jason November 1st, 2009 at 11:17 pm 28

ugh i still need to see this! looks so so so good.

  29. Anonymous November 2nd, 2009 at 1:54 am 29

It’s a good movie. But Sam Raimi’s “Drag me to hell” is better. Nominate the original. They learned it all from him anyway!

  30. TAC November 2nd, 2009 at 7:45 am 30

Dying to see it. Unfortunately, it won’t arrive in Florida until 2011 probably.

  31. Pierre de Plume November 2nd, 2009 at 10:19 am 31

the coens are making the same movie over and over.

The same might be said of Federico Fellini.

I like this FYC ad and I like the film, too.

  32. josh November 2nd, 2009 at 11:39 am 32

The ad worked for me- I’m itching to see it now.

I secretly hope Invictus suffers the same fate as Amelia, though it seems more people have it in for Swank than Freeman. Eastwood needs to lay off Oscar bait films.

  33. Jesus November 2nd, 2009 at 11:43 am 33

snooze fest. most unmemorable coen bros. movie ever.

  34. Dan November 2nd, 2009 at 11:57 am 34

This is my second favourite film by the Coens, behind NCFOM, and it is definitely the most fun film I’ve seen this year. I’d hold it just a tad below The Hurt Locker in terms of director consideration.

  35. Afrika November 2nd, 2009 at 2:06 pm 35

LOL @ the shameless “BEST PICTURE” tag. We often forget that winning an Oscar is a campaign, not a talent contest. SMDH

  36. The Natural November 2nd, 2009 at 3:00 pm 36

‘the coens are making the same movie over and over.’

“The same might be said of Federico Fellini.”

And Ingmar Bergman, and Yasujiro Ozu (especially Ozu), and Jean-Luc Godard, and Luis Buñuel, and…

Yeah. Just about every legendary director out there. It’s pretty commonplace.

  37. jb November 2nd, 2009 at 4:46 pm 37

    This was a great film.

  38. K. Bowen November 3rd, 2009 at 1:26 am 38

2001: A Space Odyssey reimagined as a Jewish-American domestic comedy. Don’t love it, but damn sure respect it.

A Serious Man for Best Picture?
    You bet.

Fantastic movie and the Coen brothers 2nd best, hell maybe even their best film. (Competing with No Country For Old Men).

This film was terrific. GO Coen Bros

  41. WeinsteinHater November 5th, 2009 at 7:49 am 41
