From Twitch via FirstShowing, the remake of the Coen brothers’ Blood Simple by Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers). Maybe more of a take-off than a remake, Three Guns is to Blood Simple as Kurosawa Yojimbo is to Dashiell Hammett’s Red Harvest. Asian Fusion Noir?

This trailer made me really confused. I have extreme difficulty to identify anything that remotely resembles “Blood Simple”’s plot, through the images, of course, because I don’t know the language. Maybe it will be a good movie, but as far of being a remake, for real, of the Coens…
The first 15-20 seconds gave me an impression of a campy quality then the rest A) doesn’t remind me of the Blood Simple plot in the least B) (albeit not knowing the Mandarin language) looks rather stupid, sorry to say. A future trailer with subtitles might definitely change this opinion but who knows.
WTF was that????
That looks awesome!
THAT made me laugh
There was one shot that reminded me of Blood Simple, the close up of the woman’s face with a sharp object in front of her face, coming through a door.
I am always amazed by Zhang Yimou’s crazy camera angles.
Really confused by the lack of English subtitles yet the odd-sounding English voiceover…
This looks extremely interesting. Anybody adapting the Coens’ work is taking a real gamble, and I think Zhang is smart for not (apparently) making a straight remake. He seems to be making his own film, and I’m very intrigued as to how he handles the comedic elements of it, as they’re evidently present. I was expecting something very po-faced, like his Wushu trilogy, but this only whets my appetite further!
What I find especially interesting is how he seems to be replacing the Coens’ style of violent thriller meets black comedy with his own style of violent thriller meets broad comedy. It could be a trainwreck, but if it works, it could be a stroke of genius. One way or another, we’re in for a real thrill-ride – there are few more visually competent directors in the world today than Zhang. Some of his films are among the most beautiful that I have ever seen.

Yeah Paddy it was very suspicious. I think Ryan dubbed it himself.
