The Killer Inside Me, promo reel

:::: SPOILER ALERT :::: MAJOR SPOILERS AFTER 03:00 :::: & NSFW ::::

:::: PLEASE NOTE ::::  This is an extended  promo reel intended only to be shown to prospective distributors, and it spills way more information about the plot that a normal trailer ought to.   It’s safe to watch the first 3 minutes, but if you don’t already know the twists and jolts from the Jim Thompson novel, then you’re going to find out more than you wanted to know past 03:00.

With those caveats out of the way, let it be said that as much as this promo reel reveals, it’s only the beginning of the depravity in this seriously twisted tale. From the back cover of the novel:

“Probably the most chilling and believable first-person story of a criminally warped mind I have ever encountered.” –Stanley Kubrick

Lou Ford is the deputy sheriff of a small town in Texas. The worst thing most people can say against him is that he’s a little slow and a little boring. But, then, most people don’t know about the sickness–the sickness that almost got Lou put away when he was younger. The sickness that is about to surface again.

An underground classic since its publication in 1952, The Killer Inside Me is the book that made Jim Thompson’s name synonymous with the roman noir.

Didn’t even know this was in production until Brad Brevett posted this promo reel at RoS today. Killer cast with a couple of names that might raise eyebrows but who seem to me perfect for the pulp vibe: Casey Affleck, Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson, Ned Beatty, Bill Pullman and Elias Koteas. This, along with William Monahan’s London Boulevard (starring Keira Knightley, Colin Farrell, Ray Winstone, and David Thewlis) should have any noir aficionado’s pulse pounding.

Quite an upsetting scene at 3 minutes 30 seconds to be honest.

Interested for Michael Winterbottom’s sake, interested for that quintessential small town America noir atmospherics.

This looks remarkable. Casey Affleck looks perfectly cast. I would NOT have expected Alba to be in a movie of this nature, but was pleasantly surprised from the clips of her in it.

So is this film looking at a late 2010 release once it finds distribution?

  3. chrisw November 5th, 2009 at 7:51 pm 3

I’m all for this movie…and then I see Jessica Alba. I just can’t get past it.

  4. Ryan Adams November 5th, 2009 at 7:57 pm 4

Joolz, that scene occurs on page 50 of the novel, with 195 pages to go. It’s impact so early in the story reminds me of the pacing in Psycho.

Totally agree about the ambiance. Production Designer, Mark Tildesley (The Constant Gardener, 28 Days Later, Danny Boyle’s Sunshine , Millions)

    Oscar nominee Jessica Alba! yay!

Why can’t you get over Alba? Set aside your preconceived notions like I did and watch this objectively. She does a knock out job from what they’ve shown us in this clip (as does Kate Hudson). It goes without saying that this is the role of a lifetime for Casey.

Fucking Awesome material!!!!!!!!!! Thanks a lot, Ryan. Gotta say that: a) As you, I didn’t know Michael Winterbottom was shooting that movie, starring Casey Affleck. Total – and cool – surprise. b) This look amazing – what a cast! – and I’m not a fan of Winterbottom (a flawed director). Affleck born to do that role (his look ins unique, deeply disturbed and melancholic, and I think that the original version, 1976, is great (most people don’t like it) and probably Stacy Keach greatest moment ever. Thompson’s book, of course, a masterpiece.

    Great, great, expectations.

“Why can’t you get over Alba? Set aside your preconceived notions like I did and watch this objectively.”

I did. The book is amazing and Affleck should knock it out of the park. I just wasn’t to impressed that’s all. It just felt awkward to me.

Wow. I didn’t really realize that was Kate Hudson until the trailer pointed it out at the end.

  10. Seankgallagher November 5th, 2009 at 11:56 pm 10

I purposely stopped at 3 minutes so I’m not spoiled until I read the Thompson book. I’m not a Alba fan either (or a Hudson fan for that matter), but I trust Michael Winterbottom. This looks damn good.

I read the book about 2 years ago. It is very good about the building up of the need to kill in this indidivual.

I am not sure about the film. I think this book has too much nuance in the characters mind to register on screen….

We haven’t seen much of Michael Winterbottom lately. I’ve always liked him though. 24 Hour Party People is one of my favorite films of the decade. Looks interesting.

  13. sartre November 6th, 2009 at 5:56 am 13

Looks great, and perhaps Affleck’s performance here will be on a par with his work as Robert Ford. The trailer seems to use a piece of music (or a slight variation on it) from Jessie James.

  14. jeter November 6th, 2009 at 1:31 pm 14

Brooke , I disagree. Did you see the version of this with Stacey Keach? (sp) Well, it sucked ass. This looks like another story entirely. I do know what you mean though since in the book there is so much dialogue that goes on in Lou Ford’s sicko mind. Casey Affleck is pulling it off here though with the help of Winterbottom’s superb directing.

“Casey Affleck is pulling it off here though with the help of Winterbottom’s superb directing.”

Affleck also has the perfect slurry slyness and sleepy-eyes demeanor to pull off this character’s habit of lathering his speech with empty adages and stock phrases to fog up his malicious intent.

WAs surprised at the casting of Alba, but every actor, no matter how much drivel they have done, deserves a shot at really proving they can act. Hope it works out for her.

  17. JK November 7th, 2009 at 12:30 am 17

Sorry but this thing looks totally boring…..

  18. Josh November 10th, 2009 at 1:46 am 18

It’s nice to see Kate Hudson doing something of worth again.
