Sherlock Holmes, trailer 3

Posted by Ryan Adams On November - 6 - 2009

Rakish meets raucous. The more they tinker with these trailers, the more the movie feels tailored to exceed expectations. Maybe Holmes’ distinguished reputation survives the steampunk transformation intact and untarnished after all. Are we more excited yet?

Here’s a perplexing clue: Anthony Peckham, hot-property screenwriter of the moment, is responsible for loading both big guns for Warner Bros. this December: Sherlock Holmes and Invictus.

Warner Bros are absolutely thrilled with the picture. They screened it last week to industry who gave it a raptuous response, generating serious talk about Best Picture, Director and Original Screenplay. Downey Jr. is said to be terrific in it but the MVP is Jude Law in a picture-stealing tour-de-force, who looks set to join Chrisoph Walts in Best Supporting. BTW the screenplay was available online for quite some time and was brilliant – both absolutely faithful to Holmes lore and a terrific entertainment. Oh, and Brad Pitt is in it, too, uncredited and right at the end. This thing could be huge.

  2. Ryan Adams November 6th, 2009 at 6:49 am 2

I think the new rumor is that there’s a role for Brad Pitt in the sequel, right?

  3. Hunter November 6th, 2009 at 6:56 am 3

Brad Pitt plays someone whose name rhymes with Coriarty.

  4. Ryan Adams November 6th, 2009 at 7:01 am 4

    oh cool, riddles before dawn…
    Napoleon Bonaparty?

  5. Dominik November 6th, 2009 at 7:13 am 5

    Vicious Farty?

  6. Ryan Adams November 6th, 2009 at 7:17 am 6

    Whoritarty?

Seriously, though. I like this trailer. Have a good feeling about this now.

  7. Dominik November 6th, 2009 at 7:26 am 7

I have a bad feeling about the director, but I like Jude Law and especially Downeyarty.

  8. bambi November 6th, 2009 at 7:27 am 8

Law looks like a scene stealer here. No surprise that there`s no buzz for McAdams. She was awesome in Mean Girls but ever since selling out to Notebook-like characters (romantic leads so sweet they induce diabetes in people), she lost the momentum.

Hunter, do you mind if I ask where do you get all those inside scoops and how come they are always positive only for movies you root for? Not that I don`t believe you but there was a Don`t Trust the Early Word thread (where we are asked not to believe negative buzz for AD`s favorite movie)so what`s the difference between your scoop and Friedman`s? I`m very curious how the inside scoop system works.

  9. Hunter November 6th, 2009 at 7:29 am 9

Bambi: no, of course I don’t mind you asking where I get all these inside scoops.

  10. Dominik November 6th, 2009 at 7:39 am 10

I think this suits very well (Hunter getting all those inside scoops), cause we talk about a Sherlock Holmes-movie!

  11. Noah R. November 6th, 2009 at 9:26 am 11

Nope, I still think it looks awful. I’ll concede that Jude Law looks good, and I’ll watch just about anything with Mark Strong and Eddie Marsan, but at the end of the day it’s a Guy Ritchie film. He has demonstrated time and time again that he has only one trick up his sleeve, and now that he no longer has any street cred as an auteur, he has basically become the British Gore Verbinski. And in the same way that Verbinski doesn’t know how to direct Johnny Depp, Ritchie is clearly letting Robert Downey Jr. give his most self-indulgent performance to date. Sorry, he’s a great actor, but he looks undirected and unfunny here. When will Hollywood stop hiring Guy Ritchie, Richard Kelly, and M. Night Shyamamadingdong? They’re all worthless now.

  12. bambi November 6th, 2009 at 10:16 am 12

How`s Guy Richie, British Gore Verbinski? Verbinski has success with POTC (no matter what one thinks of DMC and AWE, it`s one of the biggest trilogies out there, a feat that Richie is yet to pull) and The Ring. Richie is only famous for Lock Stock and Madge. As awful as AWE was, it isn`t Swept Away. And as awful as Bloom can be, he`s Brando compared to Madge.

I don`t care what Warner`s big guns are as long as HP:DH Part 2 is the gun for 2011. They better make magnificent conclusion to HP saga.

Look at the trailer. It has Pirates of the Caribbean written all over it.

  14. Hunter November 6th, 2009 at 11:17 am 14

Exactly. Mind you, there are no pirates, no Caribbean and no ships. Oh, and it is set in a different century. And there are different characters. And a different plot. And different dialogue. And different costumes. And different music. Apart from that, you’re spot on.

  15. mike November 6th, 2009 at 11:49 am 15

    looks great.

  16. Cameron November 6th, 2009 at 12:31 pm 16

At first, I had serious doubts about a Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes film. as the trailers have progressed, though, I find myself wanting more and more to see the end result. A little to much slo-mo perhaps, but Downey Jr. and Strong will make up for that, I’m sure. Looks to be quite an enjoyable thrill ride.

  17. Emily November 6th, 2009 at 12:41 pm 17

If this really does have Brad Pitt, between him, Robert Downey, and Jude Law, I’m sure it will be a hit. Unless it’s hopelessly bad which would surprise me.

And bambi hit it right on the head about McAdams. Hasn’t impressed me since Mean Girls either.

  18. Afrika November 6th, 2009 at 1:20 pm 18

When did Sherlock become scruffy, shabby, untidy? what happened to his British accent too? did he lose it after eloping to America with an American girl? SMH

I also don’t get how Law is a scene-stealer. He looks like the typical action movie sidekick; nothing new here worth any attention.

As for McAdams, she needs to sit her holier-than-thou ass down somewhere. She was constantly yapping about how she turned down a major role in Iron Man because she wants to star in more “Asrtistic movies” yet she is busy starring in movies like The Time Traveler’s Wife. Bish please.

  19. Ryan Adams November 6th, 2009 at 1:24 pm 19

“…she needs to sit her holier-than-thou ass down somewhere.”

quoting from the new testament are we? you are a christian? I didn’t know that. Very, very interesting.

  21. Kevin Klawitter November 6th, 2009 at 1:36 pm 21

“When did Sherlock become scruffy, shabby, untidy? ”
He’s like that all of the time in the stories.
“what happened to his British accent too? ”
Yet another idiot who’s willingly accent-deaf? Lordy. I bet you didn’t think Morgan Freeman had an accent in the “Invictus” trailer either.
“I also don’t get how Law is a scene-stealer. He looks like the typical action movie sidekick;”
THEY are basing it off of the reaction from a preview screening. Of the whole movie. YOU are basing your opinion off of a trailer. And since you are an obvious troll, your opinion is automatically invalid.

  22. Ryan Adams November 6th, 2009 at 1:36 pm 22

“When did Sherlock become scruffy, shabby, untidy?”

Perhaps since he lived in 1880’s London. If you want a bright shiny dry-cleaned Victorian England free of soot and grime, go rent Around the World in 80 Days.

  23. Hunter November 6th, 2009 at 2:15 pm 23

Nothing wrong with wrong with Downey’s English accent at all – and I should know, as I am English. He had a spot-on one in CHAPLIN, too.

  24. Noah R. November 6th, 2009 at 2:20 pm 24

“Exactly. Mind you, there are no pirates, no Caribbean and no ships. Oh, and it is set in a different century. And there are different characters. And a different plot. And different dialogue. And different costumes. And different music. Apart from that, you’re spot on.”

Yeah I know, smart-ass. But if you don’t think that stylistically this trailer doesn’t look like it could’ve been directed by Gore Verbinski with its cluttered action sequences and generic Zimmer score then I don’t know what to tell you. After all, are there any filmmakers working today who are more derivative than Guy Ritchie? Maybe Roland Emmerich. The man has no concept of how to take his influences and add his personal voice to them like P.T. Anderson or even Tarantino. Hey, I just made a gangster movie, let me edit it like Scorsese would. Hey, I think I’m clever, let me rip off The Usual Suspects but with Jason Statham trapped in an elevator. Hey, I just torched my career, so let me rip off The Long Good Friday and hope that everyone will forget about my past two flops.

  25. Hunter November 6th, 2009 at 2:32 pm 25

On the other hand, he is an English director dealing with an English icon and he’s not directing his own script, but an absolute crackerjack screenplay by one of the best new writers in the business – which is probably why Warners are over the moon with the finished product.

  26. Nick K. November 6th, 2009 at 2:40 pm 26

So between this and Invictus, Warner Bros. is gonna try to grab a BP nod?

siiiiggghhh…. oh well. It’s all good “Wild Things”. You’ll have a prosperous life on DVD.

And Afrika, there’s no reason to call Mcadams a “Bish” (*great* cover-up BTW. Almost better than Coriarty). What, did she kill your dog or something when you were a child?

  27. Annie November 6th, 2009 at 2:44 pm 27

    ==========================
in 5 years after Mean Girls she did ONE romantic film, I think her problem is that SHE DIDNT sell out, if if she had taken Devils wear Prada, Iron Man or any other comercial film that people were offering her she would be a huge star by now.

“And Afrika, there’s no reason to call Mcadams a “Bish” (*great* cover-up BTW. Almost better than Coriarty). What, did she kill your dog or something when you were a child?”

It’s because she represents the Hollywood system that glorifies skinny, white women, Nick. She’s taking away a role from Sidibe, who btw would’ve been excellent starring in this Victorian piece.

  29. Hunter November 6th, 2009 at 6:52 pm 29

#27 “in 5 years after Mean Girls she did ONE romantic film, I think her problem is that SHE DIDNT sell out, if if she had taken Devils wear Prada, Iron Man or any other comercial film that people were offering her she would be a huge star by now.”

Except that DWP and Iron Man were excellent movies that garnered Oscar noms for Streep and Blunt and RDJ was seriously buzzed for his iconic Tony Stark. Also, Paltrow made a nice comeback as Pepper. These two movies are light-years better than anything McAdams did post-Mean Girls. I doubt she accepted the Holmes offer because of prestige but to inflate her sagging boxoffice. RDJ was the money last year, so chances that his clout will roll over this year are very good, and she`ll be riding on his coattails.

I don’t get it. this must be a joke.
from the trailer, I can see Downey is the scene stealer. not Jude Law.
    Downey could get the nom.

“‘When did Sherlock become scruffy, shabby, untidy?’
He’s like that all of the time in the stories.”

    Wrong:

“An anomaly which often struck me in the character of my friend Sherlock Holmes was that, although in his methods of thought he was the neatest and most methodical of mankind, and although also he affected a certain quiet primness of dress, he was none the less in his personal habits one of the most untidy men that ever drove a fellow-lodger to distraction.”

    –>”primness of dress”<–

They giving too much away for me. I want to be surprised.

  35. Calahan November 9th, 2009 at 5:00 pm 35

I can see this film getting technical categories. Best Picture of the Year maybe, it’s possible. Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is most definitely a literary story. The academy loves literature.
