What do we have here? An animated film that might actually be funny? What a unique concept these days. This is why I enjoyed Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs more than I did Ponyo. yeah, heresy, I know, but I’m at least I’m confessing my sins. While a lot of animated films manage to appeal to a broad audience by combining childishness with a heavy dose of irony and pathos for the grown-ups, there’s a time-honored way to bring moviegoers of all ages together, dating back to the birth of Steamboat Willy — make everybody in the theater laugh. The animation style of Despicable Me reminds me of a golden age when artists were more than skilled technicians, but also had a keen sense of sight gags and visual wit.

I haven’t seen Cloudy but I’ve heard good things from loads of people whose opinions I respect very much (including you). Is it true that bits of it recall the dancing chickens from Eraserhead?
Right now, I’d say Toy Story is the standard by which all animation should be measured. It’s hilariously funny without winking to the parents or playing dumb for the kids. This…I don’t know. Doesn’t look particularly funny to me.
And while I don’t think Ponyo was hysterical by any means, I do recall laughing quite a few times.

If I remember correctly, I thought the 1st trailer made it look much funnier. The animation looks good, but a little derivative – the main character looks like a Ratatouille chef, and the rest of the film looks sort of like Meet the Robinsons, or perhaps the Incredibles (now that I think of, the villian in Meet the Robinsons was also that sort of all-timely despicable villain look)
Hmm…aren’t there a lot of funny animated films?
Maybe I have grim sense of humor daveylow. There are funny animated films, sure, but not the ones we usually talk about as the top contenders.
Up – did not laugh. one mild chuckle about the voice-synthesized Alpha Dog
Ponyo – not funny at all. Fish spitting water in kid’s face? not hilarious to me.
Coraline – creepy and fascinating. Loved it. Not a laugh riot.
Waltz with Bashir – wasn’t meant to be funny
Kung Fu Panda – visually amusing and the funniest animated script of 2008, to me.

The only problem with your complaint about ‘Cloudy’ being funnier then ‘Ponyo’ is that ‘Ponyo’ was never meant to be a laugh of minute film. It was a supposed to be a charming kids drama. “Coraline” wasn’t supposed to be funny either. Sorry you didn’t find “Up” funny, but that movie seems to be polarizing people these days anyways.
While I do love to laugh not everything can be a comedy. So the next time you make an animated feature comparison, it might read better to compare two funny movies that are meant to be funny instead of one that’s meant to be funny to one that’s meant to charming. A more suitable comparison would have been “Up” or “Ice Age 3.”
I don’t know that I was complaining about Ponyo not being funny. I was just observing that it’s not.
The point about Despicable Me is that it looks like a quality animated feature that is funny.
I was answering a question: “Aren’t there a lot of funny animated films?” and my answer was meant to be, “Not the ones the get the most Oscar buzz.”
Besides, even the parts of Ponyo that were meant to funny (the face-spitting, the addictive jonesing for ham) were not funny to me. Those things were irritating. So that’s why I brought it up.
Ice Age 3 had some funny moments. For me, Up didn’t.

The fact the this trailer made me smile was reason enough for me to praise it. I don't mean to sneer at the other movies I mentioned. I respect them all. Just happy to see some good old-fashioned Loony Tunes type humor on the big screen again, that's all.]
Love the Hitchcock nod at the end. But the rest sure made me chuckle.
The first viewing of “Up” was one of the most entertaining times in cinema. Couldn’t stop laughing.Ryan,too bad you didn’t enjoy it.
I’m sure it will not figure in my final top three of the year but it’s my favorite of the year till date.As I live on the other side of the world I still need to watch most of the movies already released there.

I can’t tell what this even is. Nor can I say I found it humorous in the slightest. At least it’s marginally better than that horrendously stupid first trailer.
This looks alright, but I don’t think it will even compare to the likes of Up (which was both hilarious and serious).
