Great to see David Kross get some recognition for The Reader, excellent performance that went ignored last award season.

    2. Afrika November 7th, 2009 at 1:45 pm 2

who keeps nominating this Penelope woman for awards? seriously! ugh!

    3. Europe November 7th, 2009 at 1:51 pm 3

      Afrika…..Shut Up!!!

      Thank you.

    4. Peralta November 7th, 2009 at 1:55 pm 4

Tahar Rahim and Charlotte Gainsbourg for the acting awards. GREAT nominations this year :)

    5. Kay November 7th, 2009 at 1:58 pm 5

Yay for Penelope and Broken Embraces!

    6. Ryan Adams November 7th, 2009 at 2:08 pm 6

3 direct complaints to my email this week.
More than a dozen recent incidents in comments.
      Afrika, banned again.

    7. Guy Lodge November 7th, 2009 at 2:12 pm 7

I only count 3 noms for Antichrist. 5 (or 6, if you count the People’s Choice category) for Slumdog seems worth a mention, though.

    8. Ryan Adams November 7th, 2009 at 2:20 pm 8

      Thanks, Guy. Miscounted.

sure, the Slumdog numbers are worth mentioning. Glad you did it so I won’t have to.

    9. Dan November 7th, 2009 at 2:27 pm 9

I knew this would happen somewhere along the way – The White Ribbon, my favourite film of this year, up against Let the Right One In, my favourite film of the decade. But honestly, A Prophet is a very strong film – and it’s got everything big and in your face going for it, it’s almost epic, as opposed the even more nuanced films I mentioned. I suspect it will do well in this context.

    10. Pat November 7th, 2009 at 2:30 pm 10

Three noms for “The Reader”, which I am glad to see. Congrats to David Kross.

    11. Watermelons November 7th, 2009 at 2:31 pm 11

“Kate Winslet in The Reader (Der Vorleser)”

      ^__^

    12. Otto November 7th, 2009 at 2:45 pm 12

I thought I’d never have to see “Slumdog Millionaire” nominated for something again. Didn’t we all have enough last season?

    13. JK November 7th, 2009 at 2:47 pm 13

      Thank U Ryan….!!!

      We couldn’t stand Afrika’s comments…

      Dave Kross, yes

    14. Noah R. November 7th, 2009 at 2:49 pm 14

Slumdog’s still winning awards. Wait for some more backlash haha. Glad to see Let the Right One In still getting recognition. Can’t wait to see A Prophet and The White Ribbon. Antichrist is my favorite film of the year so far no matter what anybody says. All in all, I’m satisfied, though I will never understand the love for The Reader.

    15. bambi November 7th, 2009 at 3:29 pm 15

Slimdog was obliterated by Twilight sweep at MTV Movie Awards so, no, it`s not winning everything.

Too bad they didn`t nominate Lena Leandersson for LOTROI but here`s hoping that Cloe Moretz will get awards notice for her sensational work in Kick Ass or for LOTROI remake. 2010 is her year.

    16. chrisw November 7th, 2009 at 3:36 pm 16

Ryan, thank you. Hopefully it will be 2 weeks of bliss and actual discussion on film.

How do people get in touch with you, though?

    17. Joschi November 7th, 2009 at 3:49 pm 17

      HAAANEEEEEKEEEEEEEEE!!!

    18. taptup November 7th, 2009 at 3:52 pm 18

You posted the EUROPEAN FILM ACADEMY PRIX D’EXCELLENCE twice :P

And what an ugly poster for A Prophet (it seems you don’t love it so much :P P)

    19. Clayton November 7th, 2009 at 3:54 pm 19

So strange to see Fly Me to the Moon and Transporter 3 nominated alongside movies like Slumdog and Let the Right One In.

    20. Ryan Adams November 7th, 2009 at 4:10 pm 20

      er, thanks taptup.
the official EFA website is messed up.
they have the composers listed as “prix d’excellence”
and the “prix d’excellence” nominees listed as composers.
but I should have caught that.

you know, I actually do sort of like the poster for A Prophet, especially the razor blade font. But it felt wrong to post it all by itself, so I though it was more fair to share headline space with the other top films. You can click those smaller posters to see large versions.

but no, that’s not the most flattering shot of Tahar Rahim, is it?

    21. ORDINARY COW November 7th, 2009 at 5:24 pm 21

The SNUB for Giovanna Mezzogiorno in BEST ACTRESS is… HATEFUL! A TRUE SHAME!!! SHAME ON YOU, EUROPEAN FILM ACADEMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a shameeeeeeeeeeeee!

    22. dlen November 7th, 2009 at 5:25 pm 22

Broken Embraces is not vintage Almodovar even if the the themes are. I find that when he makes films about filmmakers he’s being just a bit self indulgent and I’m less engaged. I had the same problem with Bad Education, despite Gael Garcia Bernal in drag!

And despite the nod here, Penelope Cruz’s performance is unlikely to get Oscar attention. It’s fine – she’s always better in Spanish – but nothing special.

    23. Mikhail November 7th, 2009 at 5:41 pm 23

Why Prophet’s poster is in russian? It’s cool but why…?

    24. Other Ryan November 7th, 2009 at 5:49 pm 24

“Slumdog was obliterated by Twilight sweep at MTV Movie Awards so, no, it`s not winning everything.”

I’d like to see NOT winning at the MTV Movie Awards as ACTUALLY winning. But that’s just me.

    25. Ryan Adams November 7th, 2009 at 6:24 pm 25

    26. Joolz November 7th, 2009 at 7:02 pm 26

Damn. What a strong year for European cinema. That is all I have to say about that list of movies.

    27. Glenn from the UK November 8th, 2009 at 12:38 pm 27

Great to see David Kross nominated and he was seriously overlooked by Oscar. I think he practically matched Kate Winslett in the film. Both amazing performances!!!!!

    28. Tero Heikkinen November 9th, 2009 at 3:36 am 28

Look at that Best Picture lineup. Shows that Europe really can compete with USA (if someone even doubted it).

In the order of how I would like to see it go:

      1. Let the Right One In (2008’s best film, missed the deadline)
      2. The White Ribbon (best film this year)
      3. Slumdog Millionaire (to match the Oscar)

The other three should not win, even though they are great. ‘Fisk Tank’ I have not seen.

    29. Tero Heikkinen November 9th, 2009 at 3:38 am 29

People’s choice will probably go to ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

    30. Joolz November 9th, 2009 at 7:20 am 30

Look at that Best Picture lineup. Shows that Europe really can compete with USA

I don’t see it as competing with the USA. I just see it as showing how incredibly fertile European cinema is right now. To be honest, we rarely get to consider European cinema collectively, we always think in terms of national cinema – French, British, Spanish, German, Swedish. But when placed in a collective context, it is a remarkably strong, diverse and rich set of movies. The only weak link, in my opinion, in that list, is The Reader. But there are some stone-cold masterpieces and some extraordinary pieces of art there. I wonder if you will see such a strong shortlist of movies for an award anywhere in the world this year, including at the Oscars.

It’s great seeing The Baader Meinhof Complex continue to get recognition. It’s an excellent film about a very complicated and difficult time
