Sneak Peek at Avatar Tonight During Glee

Posted by Sasha Stone On November - 11 - 2009

avatar-character-5

I saw the promos for this last night but can’t find any info online about it.  Footage will be shown at some point during tonight’s new episode of Fox’s runaway hit, Glee.  I suspect it will eventually find its way to YouTube so keep a look out for it.  One of the best things about Avatar now are the low expectations involved.  Heading into the Oscar race, that is, for the most part, where you want to be.  This seems to only apply to big Hollywood movies – the little indies really need the pre-season buzz to stay aloft.  The only problem has been the rumblings about the budget and the cost.  Point made here, and then debated here. Box office is the last thing on my mind with Avatar – the movie is going to kill.  Even if it tanks domestically, it will have a long life overseas.  From what I can tell, the film, like Titanic before it, has something for everyone.  Parents will take their kids, tweens and grandparents to it.  It looks like old school sci-fi mixed with new fangled digital 3-D.

Yet ANOTHER reason to watch Glee! I love it!

It also looks pretty bad so far.

The 3D footage shown at Avatar Day was stunning and the 3 minute long trailer worked really well.

I’m looking forward to seeing it next month.

      Haters to the left!

However this turns out, the effects are fantastic-looking.

I don’t know how anyone can look at the latest trailer and not be at least a little excited, but I was one of the early skeptics, and this is one of my most anticipated.

    5. Gregoire November 11th, 2009 at 11:39 am 5

I have few doubts that it will deliver, but I don’t understand the confidence based on the trailers we’ve seen thus far.

The first trailer was flatout awful, the second one much improved but still lacking an IT factor.

If you didn’t know the names attached to this film, few would be as inspired to sing its praises before even seeing it.

To some, Waterworld looked this good in previews.

    6. Loyal November 11th, 2009 at 11:41 am 6

Gregoire, you weren’t impressed by the IMAX 3D footage?

    7. Mike November 11th, 2009 at 11:42 am 7

Somehow I don’t see this having the cross over appeal that, say TITANIC did. Parents will take their kids, yes, but their grandparents? I think thats a stretch.

I still think it is going to turn off a lot of people who are going to assume from the trailers this is just a video game turned movie. It just has that look about it.

Why cant this smurf thing just go away? Arg.

    9. TAC November 11th, 2009 at 11:49 am 9

I feel like I am the only person on here that doesn’t care about this movie. Nothing about it excites me.

    10. qwiggles November 11th, 2009 at 11:59 am 10

Nothing about that trailer impresses me, Free. I honestly don’t see anything in this footage that is any different from what I’ve seen in the jungle chases in King Kong and the jungle warfare in Episode I. Neither of which were very strong. I am no more excited by a Naavi princess jumping while someone goes “Whooooo!” or by a pterodactyl thing taking on a guy in a big robot thing than I was excited by Jack Black running between T-Rexes.

I’ve been eagerly following this thing for years. The moment my hopes began to wane was when I read the first script report, which described something a lot like a little boy’s dream version of Dances With Wolves in space, with a white dude going native with cool guns and beasties and KABOOMS. Then came the teaser, which looked more cartoony than I was expecting. Then came the full trailer, 98% of which consisted of lines like “Let’s dance,” “OutSTANDING,” “Marine, in an avatar body: that’s a potent mix!”, “you get me what I need, I’ll see to itchu get yer legs back — yerr REAL legs,” “do you forget what team you’re playin’ for?”, “I guess we bettah start then,” “we will send them a message — that this, THIS is our land!” (said by the slumming white tourist, gone blue/native.)

I’m sure there’s a way to revolutionize 3D filmmaking without making a dogpile of insulting colonial white guilt cliches, but I have seen nothing to convince me that Cameron has done it. Prove me wrong, Avatar.

Avatar needs to be bigger than New Moon or it`s in big trouble. cause new Moon will be huge and it costed little. Avatar, OTOH…The budget number that`s been tossed around is mind-blowing. I mean, I know that Titanic was the most expensive of all time at the time, but it`s easier to surpass $200 mio budget than freakin` $500 mio!? If the budget rumour is true than this thing is already a domestic dud unless lightning strikes twice for Cameron (which would be unprescended and awesome). We`ll see. Either way, it`s a guaranteed talk of the town for better or worse.

    12. Oshu Huddleston November 11th, 2009 at 12:53 pm 12

It’s hard to get excited about amazing 3D if the amazing 3D’s subject matter is not even remotely interesting.

    13. Ryan Adams November 11th, 2009 at 1:13 pm 13

Avatar targeted the Nickelodeon crowd with that last kid-friendly trailer. New Moon aims for something completely different with this PETA ad featuring Christian Serratos. (NSFW)

c’mon Cameron. When are we going to see some nude furless Na’vi ass?

    14. bambi November 11th, 2009 at 1:28 pm 14

Re: PETA ad – Bless New Moon!

Avatar is supposed to be eco-friendly movie but it`s new Moon who`s actually standing up to animal cruelty, while Avatar is trying to make a buck off kids. terrible marketing.

TAC: You’re one of many, myself included.

Yeah it totally looks like it has something for everyone…except everyone.

Ummmm. I love GLEE. I am suck a GLEEK. I don’t even know why. It’s because (A) Ich bin gay (B)I am a musician who likes to make fun of all the horrible things this show does (because let’s face it – NO high school music program is anywhere like that… they may try to be, but it’s not that good) (C)hotness on the show (D) Sue is freaking hilarious and (E) it’s so over-the-top.

      LOL Ok, I’m done now.

    18. KGB November 11th, 2009 at 4:47 pm 18

TAC and DBibby – I’m with ya. This isn’t Titanic folks!(not that I’m an “overboard” admirer of that film) In other words, its Cameron going back to his sci-fi roots, and playing with new toys, where the best he could score (Sigourney aside) are technical nods. Still, the fun is in the anticipation. We shall see… nude furless Na’vi ass and more.

    19. Jon November 11th, 2009 at 10:35 pm 19

Needs to be bigger than New Moon? Are you kidding me? Well, let’s compare James Cameron to whoever wrote the movie (and the books for that matter): To JC’s credit he created a superior sequel film to an amazing horror movie in Aiens, he gave us one of the most compelling and intricate movies and storylines with Terminator (not to mention character!), he brought the laughs and action with him in True Lies, and he delivered the biggest movie of all time that has only recently been rivaled by the likes of The Dark Knight. What did Twilight do? It had horrible acting and dialogue, lousy special effects and action. What’s New Moon going to have? Pretty much the same thing as the first, because it’s base is what’s wrong. No matter what anyone says, Stephanie Meyer CANNOT write a good story. James Cameron almost always has.

Point being, whether or not this movie makes enough money to be successful, this could very well be James Cameron’s greatest accomplishment as a filmmaker, whereas Twilight and all of those movies will be standard throw away crap within a few years.

    20. bambi November 11th, 2009 at 11:22 pm 20

Twilight Saga sans Breaking Dawn is so awesome and Edward and Bella are Jack and Rose of 21st century. And yes, Avatar needs to be bigger than New Moon otherwise it`s title won`t appear in the trailer for Cameron`s next movie like Abyss, his only flop, didn`t appear in Avatar trailer. And yes, for Cameron to be allowed to overspend on another genre spectacle such as Battle Angel Alita, Avatar needs to make money like New Moon, HP:HBP and Transformers together.

      Is this thing YouTube`d yet?

    21. Lop November 11th, 2009 at 11:29 pm 21

Very epic.Easily erases the Nickleodeon atrocity from memory. Starts like the second trailer but adds new scenes from the middle to the end. Can`t wait!

    23. Free November 12th, 2009 at 8:20 am 23

Based on this post, is the reason most people here aren’t at all interested in it because it won’t be Titanic?

Well, maybe that’s why I am interested, because I don’t care if it comes close to resembling that film. I wouldn’t care who was attached or not, I think it looks interesting, and I wouldn’t compare it to Waterworld at all. I only wanted to see that because I was into anything Kevin Costner, not because I actually thought it looked good.

Like I said, good or bad, I’m impressed with the visuals. And back to the connection with Titanic, the rumblings on that film weren’t good at all before it was released. And it did pretty well for itself in the end. . .
