Penelope Cruz definitely NOT pregnant on Leno (thanks to reader Andrew for the tip).
Penelope’s interview after the cut.
Here’s the thing, though – call me cynical but the applause in the background for the clips on Penelope seem a bit … forced? Anyway, the applause was deserved but I have a hard time believing the audience knew the movies. But that’s just me. I still love her Spanish acceptance speech:

Her singing kind of reminds me of Catherine Zeta-Jones in “Chicago”.
The interview is pretty cool, too. I generally don’t watch late night TV, but I could probably start watching Leno.
but didn’t she announce she was pregnant?
what happened to the baby?
Forget about Von Trier. Nine IS the antichrist.
She was never pregnant, Alex. That was just a rumor.
Her singing is not great, but gosh, how sexy does she looks!!!
liked her voice, but I couldn’t understand ONE WORD she was singing.
I liked the Kate Hudson clip better…
I agree, very Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago. She’s got a good voice by the sound of things…better than Kate Hudson’s imo.
I love this girl. I can’t think of anyone who couldn’t! Well, apart from Afrika. Doesn’t count though, does it?!?
God she looks so hot in that A Call from the Vatican clip. Her dancing looks great but not sold on her singing. I can’t understand a word she is singing. Oh well, her interview with Leno was cute!
I thought she was fantastic. I also couldn’t understand the lyrics but so what!
This number speaks a language beyond lyrics.
It appeals to the non-verbal side of my brain.
While Penelope shows us the ropes, here are the subtitles to go with the lesson:
She might as well been speaking in Spanish. I did not understand one freaking word that she was singing….
PENE SINGS:
Who won’t care if you come to me tired and over-worked? I won’t, bambino!
Who know’s a therapy to beat what you can get from me? I don’t!
I ADMIT I HAD TO CHECK THE LYRICS
That’s odd that some can’t understand what she’s singing. I had a hard time understanding Cinema Italiano on the contrary.
The more I see of “Nine”, the more it seems like all style and razzle-dazzle, and no substance. Here’s hoping there’s substance, especially since DDL is in it.
I don’t like Pene¡¡¡¡¡¡
Pretty Pene?
Horrible actress, Pene¡
Horrible Oscar for Vicky Christina Barcelona and Horrible Golden Globe to Best Comedy¡
I have to say I’m a lil unimpressed…this is one of my favorite songs in the musical and Jane Krowkowski sang the heck out of it…on a positive note – Penelope looked smoking hot!
Tarika is probably Afrika.
This movie doesn’t interest me. I wish it did because it has some terrific people in it….
I agree with Kay. Come on Afrika, knock it off. You aren’t fooling anybody.
Maybe you can’t understand the lyrics because she, unlike Krakowski, sings with Mediterranean accent.
Having said that, and being Spanish myself, I didn’t understand a word
I didn’t understand a word she sung.
But understood all of “Cinema Italiano”.
Damn, I’m white.
I liked the voice, didnt understand a word but thought she is stunningly beautiful and smoking hot!

Ryan, I don’t think that speaks to anything that counts as part of your brain.
But seriously, I… I’m just not seeing it. It looks good, but not spectacular. I just don’t think this will make as much of an impact as it would have had we not had Chicago first. And even then, something seems missing.
I sure hope this number is better in full, because this is awful. I am spoiled by seeing the original show and the revival with Anita Morris and Jane Krakowski doing the song. Even the orchestration seems overdone.
I’m not sure why they chose such a small snippet.
wow…the applause was so canned. Either that or people LOVED Vicky Cristina Barcelona and one woman just found Penelope Cruz hysterical. O_o haha
So far, I’m definitely not feeling Nine. The recent sneak peaks lowered my expectations about the movie. Actually, I wasn’t even that anxious to see it, but now I think I will not watch it at all. I love the actors in the cast (especially DDL, though I’m extremely skeptical about his singing skills…), but I LOATHE Rob Marshall. He’s such a cheap Fosse knock off, all style and no substance. Marshall can only dream about having the talent and vision Fosse had. Poor little thing.
Well, it appears that a few of our friends here understand now that their favourite movie will not get the Best Picture Award this year.
I am going to tell them a secret : Monique will have the Best Supporting Award, because Penelope Cruz cannot win two years in a row, or some of you would have a nervous breakdown.
Are you happy with this ?
So get a life and stop bashing a very good performance, it won’t help your cause.
very excited to see it.
i’m not concerned with not
understanding all the lyrics.
i had trouble understanding
Led Zepplin as well. and Antonio
Banderas’ Che in EVITA was puzzling
in many parts. discovered the lyrics
later and it filled things in.
his performance was wonderful, btw.
kinda wish Antonio had been given DDL’s role
as he had it on Broadway.
“all style and no substance”????
‘Cmon people!!!! So far all we’ve seen is a bunch of pictures that wanna show us how glamourous and splendid the production design is. We’ve seen 1 minute of Kate Hudson singing, and 20 seconds (20 seconds!) of Pene singing!
How can we judge the movie’s depth and “substance” when all we’ve seen is this and a teaser trailer with almost no dialogue?
Don’t think Cabaret or Moulin Rouge looked better after seeing 20 seconds of a sneak peak…
Well, Notto, I think we are all very familiar with Marshall’s style. From everything we’ve seen so far, Nine seems to be very similar to Chicago. Which is totally “all style and no substance”. Just like Memoirs of a Geisha. Pretty, but empty. Glamour to hide the lack of a decent plot or music.
For the actors, I hope I’m wrong, but I have a feeling that Nine will suck big time.
Now, Cabaret would definitely look better in a sneak peak, because the whole movie is very consistent, from the beginning to the ending (which is fantastic, btw). There’s no comparison.
And to be honest, Moulin Rouge makes me want to puke. Too sugary. Yuck.
well i did understand the lyrics without checking it!and i must say that both hudson and cruz have good but not outstanding voices. however the song hudson is singing is just bad and doesn´t fit at all! was it in the original production?!
well for now the only one who did a really great job was fergie…but hey we still have kidman, cotillard, dench and sofia loren…
Well Misty*, even if I agree Chicago has a lot of style and not as much substance… I would be pleased if NINE matched Chicago. Hopefully it won’t match Geisha!
Let’s hope Rob has allowed those 6 Oscar winners put some substance into this. I WANT to believe so…
You forgot Fergie, the master thespian.
I’m not Africa¡
There are a lot of people who doesn’t like Pene and I’m one of them¡
And yes, Rob Marshall is a cheap Bob Fosse (he has brilliant collaborators (like John Mhyre, etc) but lacks style and creativity (and talent)
Chicago won the best picture for the aggressive marketing of the Weinstein’s (as the Oscar for Pene last year, Viola Davis deserved that award). That year there were many films much better than Chicago
And Nine has been in a wardrobe until november or desember to get nominations and Oscars, but (as Chicago) if it wins some Oscar it will be the Oscar to best marketing¡¡he,he
I won’t see Nine
Hey! I’m a professional musician who has performed on Broadway before, in addition to major symphony orchestras throughout the country, and I think that the clip of Penelope Cruz is fantastic. Obviously not as good as Jane Krakowski, or Anita Morris, but still fantastic. It is a hard song to sing, and she pulls it off. I understand the lyrics, sure her accent is a bit of a problem, but I still feel like she does a great job here. I think the real standout will be Marion Cotillard who sings “My Husband Makes Movies”. While I think Cruz is fantastic here, I actually have reservations about Kate Hudson. I just saw that clip, and I didnt really like her, or the “genre” of the song. It clashes with the other music in the film. I still think that this film will be the one to beat.
i like to see marion c’s number… i heard she nailed the role in nine…
