Gad, how does Oprah keep it straight: lady’s face ripped off by a chimp, Sarah Palin, “two time Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis!”

I guess Oprah needs to do her Oscar homework. Nicole’s a Best Actress winner… Why all the Kate Hudson Oscar Nominee love all of a sudden? Does Oprah even know what movie Kate was nominated for?

Oh, and Nicole – LAY OFF THE FACE! She looks like a younger Joan Rivers. Ugh!

    2. Sertan November 18th, 2009 at 8:03 pm 2

They all look great! Except Nicole Kidman’s unmoving face. I hope this much praise from Oprah will not be a bad luck for this movie (remember Australia, Dreamgirls???)

    3. tyler November 18th, 2009 at 8:04 pm 3

this movie is going to rock! go ddl.

    4. Nick K. (and a talking fox) November 18th, 2009 at 8:06 pm 4

Don’t mean to be a nitpick Sasha, but I think you mean “lady’s face ripped off *by* chimp.”

God, that poor woman. I couldn’t even stand looking at her for five seconds. I mean no offense, but it’s quite sad what happened to her. :(

    5. bambi November 18th, 2009 at 8:07 pm 5

      DDL is fun!

La Cotillard for Catwoman (in Nolan Batman, of course). She = female Taji.

Too bad Fergie wasn`t there. :(

Nicole looks so much better with her natural red hair.

      Even Kate looked good.

      Pene = adorable

      This looks good.

    6. Sertan November 18th, 2009 at 8:07 pm 6

I think they called Nicole Kidman as “Best actress winner”.

I only wish Kate Hudson could express herself better! She was quite incoherent.
Marion looks just great except her hair. Penelope is amazing as always. DDL is Mr. Charisma! and Nicole Kidman looks too thin and nothing moved on her forehead.

    7. Sasha Stone November 18th, 2009 at 8:09 pm 7

Thanks Nick. Ha. How sad, though.

    8. Anthony November 18th, 2009 at 8:18 pm 8

No, Sertan… I’ve watched it again. Nothing for Nicole. Nothing for Pene. Nothing for Marion either. My opinion, you pull the Academy Award winner/nominee card, you better give everyone their due. Dammit.

      I know, I know… I’m nitpicking.

      @ #4 & #7

      I have to stop skimming.
I was thinking, “Hey, that’s uncalled for.”
Thought you guys were talking about Nicole.

    10. bambi November 18th, 2009 at 8:46 pm 10

I think she put the spotlight on Kate because of the stupid A-Rod romance. Just like Katie from TomKat got more press than Batman Begins and its important and talented cast members.

    11. aspect ratio November 18th, 2009 at 8:49 pm 11

Dang, I completely forgot that six of the seven in the main cast have all won acting Oscars! Only Kate Hudson is “merely” an Oscar nominee.

Wow, I caught this by accident. Didn’t even know it was planned.
Everyone looks pretty dang impressive in the clips. It is true that it looks like a flick you might have to see twice because so much is being thrown at you.
After seeing this special it’s just cemented my belief that it will be the Oscar nomination leader. It’s locked for cinematography and production design ( art direction ? ) that is for sure.
And DDL does a pretty good accent ( surprised ? ) the women admitted on the special that he carries the film and they just followed his lead. One thing about what I got the feeling, is that he’s selling it as a man near a nervous breakdown and his many scenes will be heavily dramatic.
This special just made me want to see the movie even more and I don’t even really care for musicals.

      where’s Sophia?
she’s the one i want to see.

    21. Nadine November 18th, 2009 at 10:56 pm 21

Sophia and Judi didn’t do the Chicago leg of the press tour (aka Oprah interview). They started their Nine press junket in NYC with Fergie.

    22. Stephen Holt November 18th, 2009 at 11:30 pm 22

OK, what I’m hearing. It’s dividing audiences right down the middle. Some people REALLLLLY don’t like it. And some do.

And so I’m told…Marion’s the best of the women. She’s got two songs. The rest of them only have one. Penelope is great. Oscar nominations for them? Best Actress and Best Supp. for Pretty Penny? Those are the nominations if any. And DDL is very good. Not great? A nomination again for this Academy fave.

It’s evidently SLAVISHLY, EXACTLY the Bway musical. Which was non-linear, as was “8 1/2″ the Fellini movie on which it is based in the first place. And some people don’t like that. They want more story. But there IS no story…

Sounds fabulous to me!..And Oprah kept talking around it. “Just exactly what would you call this?” she asked one of them. Nicole, I think.

Nicole looked dreadful on Oprah and Marion was struggling to give co-herent answers. She was a big drab between beauty queens Penny and Kate.

Nicole practically choked on the words “It’s a supporting role.”

ALLLL that botox! Why do women do that to themselves?

Marion looked tortured beyond belief, but then so is her character, which was played by Anouk Aimee in the Original Movie. The FELLINI movie.

      The music sounds…meh…

Is it going to make the Big Ten? Well, the NBR’s Bucket List for sure. For the Oscars?

Guess it depends on how much of a musical comedy queen you are. Which means it should WIN Best Picture from the NBR.

The Oscar? I dunno. Can’t wait to see it for myself.

But this is what I’m hearing from those who saw it this past week.

    23. Chance November 18th, 2009 at 11:38 pm 23

    26. (The Real) Dan November 19th, 2009 at 12:09 am 26

Very interesting info, Stephen! I noticed that Oprah would only say “Visually stunning!” and never “it’s a great film!”

    27. Dragon November 19th, 2009 at 12:11 am 27

I just want to say that, Johnny Depp, who I really like, with his voice like “that”, got a nomination for Sweeney Todd… so I’m thinking Daniel would definitely at least get a nod…

    28. Mark November 19th, 2009 at 12:14 am 28

I can’t wait to see this. I wonder which of the four performances (Hudson, Kidman, Cruz, Cotillard) will be noticed by critics as awards-calibre. I gotta admit that the one and only draw for me is seeing Ms. Loren on the big screen once again. After seeing her on the trailer, I could not help but watch “Sunflower” once again.

    29. The Natural November 19th, 2009 at 12:18 am 29

I truly apologize for deviating from the topic, but I can’t help but bring this up… Roger Ebert has just given a scathing, one star (!) review to the new Twilight garbage, er, movie. I am in hysterics!!!

Also four stars to Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant (okay…).

    30. Ryan Adams November 19th, 2009 at 12:30 am 30

I noticed that Oprah would only say “Visually stunning!” and never “it’s a great film!”

There can only one “great film” for Oprah this year, and we know where her emotions are already invested.

    31. Kevin November 19th, 2009 at 12:56 am 31

Good point Ryan. Though to be honest, Oprah’s marketing of Precious really rubbed me the wrong way.

    32. dela November 19th, 2009 at 1:47 am 32

Does Sophia Loren get a song in this one?

    33. Kholby November 19th, 2009 at 4:35 am 33

Oh, how I love Nicole Kidman. Her interview is just so wonderful, especially when she starts talking about Daniel and his love and respect of the work. Sigh.

    34. cca November 19th, 2009 at 5:47 am 34

Sophia Loren sings “Guarda la Luna”, (“Look at the Moon”) one of the 3 new songs written for the film… From what I’ve read, it’s not a completely original song since it takes music from previous songs of the musical.

God, I can’t wait to see this!!!!!!

    35. André November 19th, 2009 at 6:13 am 35

well, the “Oscar Nominee Kate Hudson” thing does make a little sense, since she’s the only nominee there – everyone else is an Oscar WINNER! =P

that video reignited the huge crush I used to have on her.

I was on the fence about this, but it looks like a pretty good film.

also, I think Bad Lieutenant will have its share of followers… it got some pretty good reviews when it played here in the Rio Film Fest.

    36. iggy November 19th, 2009 at 6:33 am 36

I love to hear so many accents together, to have all these actors coming from so different backgrounds put together.

But, my superficial self is a bit disappointed that Oprah didn’t address the elephant in the room. How did Kidman and Cruz get along? What did they talk about? I mean she didn’t have to ask specifically about Cruise, but I don’t know, she could’ve asked them about their reactions when they met and so on.

When you see them all together Cotillard, Cruz and Hudson seem to form a smaller group of their own and Kidman and Day-Lewis seem a bit awkwardly out of place.

Anyway, I think this is more heavily promoted movie I’ve ever seen in my short experience oscar watching. So, I think unless it’s completely awful nominations in all major categories are almost locked.

    37. M2009 November 19th, 2009 at 7:03 am 37

Oh please stop with this story of Nicole’s forehead doesn’t move, it’s an old story and totally untrue now.
It’s a commonplace like it was “Ice queen”.

    38. Annie November 19th, 2009 at 7:08 am 38

The all look great, everyone sounds good. Nicole’s Unusual Way is very emotional, it’s better than I expected. And she looked beautiful along Marion at Oprah show. True ladies.

    39. Sasha Stone November 19th, 2009 at 7:17 am 39

Face ripped of by a chimp (not a monkey; chimps and gorillas etc. are great apes – and one of my obsessions…). Yeah, this dumbass woman thought it would be cute to keep a chimp as a pet but of course, chimps haven’t evolved to live like our cute little sidekicks, especially male chimps. They become very aggressive and jealous. Anyone coming near his “owner” would encounter problems with this chimps – this is why the woman is suing her friend for 60 mil.

They shot the chimp – a tragedy all around. A stupid person is the only one to blame.

    40. Glenn November 19th, 2009 at 8:17 am 40

I don’t think the make-up crew did good with Nicole. She’s actually been looking far better lately (and since she’s making a movie about a man who becomes a woman, a flat forehead wouldn’t be good so I believe she’s laid off of it).

    41. Jose Carlos Spain November 19th, 2009 at 8:41 am 41

I can´t wait to see the movie! Everybody is talking about a Penelope nomination for the Oscar! I´ve seen some clips and I think Marion Cotillard will be better in the movie!! She´s a great actress! All of them are good actors!! I love Kate Hudson musical number!

I can´t wait to see Christopher Nolan´s Inception either!! Leo Dicaprio, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon Levitt – Great actors, great director!

    42. bambi November 19th, 2009 at 9:06 am 42

#29 “I truly apologize for deviating from the topic, but I can’t help but bring this up… Roger Ebert has just given a scathing, one star (!) review to the new Twilight garbage, er, movie. I am in hysterics!!!”

Eh, Ebert loved J-Lo`s Enough and some other J-Lo-starring shit and he also loved Columbus HP and didn`t Cuaron`s, so this is a very good news. All reviews says New Moon will please fans which is what we fans care about. Does it have buff shirtlessness, angst, buff shitlessness, passion, buff shirtlessness? Yes,yes, yes, yes, yes. Awesome movie. Done.

    43. Stephen Holt November 19th, 2009 at 9:50 am 43

It’s a great irony that the most talked about Oscar possiblities are Marion C. for Best Actress and Penelope for Best Supporting Actress. And they are previous winners and have both already won in the categories people are talking them up for.Meaning neither will win again.

And it’s the great DDL that is in Oscar jeopardy because the Best Actor category is crowded and getting more and more crowded every day.

Marion, FYI, is the long-suffering, mistreated wife and Penelope is the mistress. The role that Pretty Penny is playing won a Tony for the Actress who played it in the original Bway production, whose name escapes me. But somebody else knows the answer to this. “Letter to the Vatican” is the SEXY number and Penelope sings AND Dances! She’s been studying dance all her life and still takes lessons. I think she wanted to be a ballerina in the first place.

And Marion is doing her own singing, too!

If the picture receives the kind of mixed reception it seems to be getting in a year of ten slots, it could get nommed for BP, but maybe miss out of director.

They rehearsed it for TWO MONTHS!

I think the word Oprah finally came up with was “Extravaganza.”

    44. tundraaim November 19th, 2009 at 10:52 am 44

      LETTER to the vatican?

    45. JR November 19th, 2009 at 11:40 am 45

Nice to see some of the cast together. Notice how they refuse to let us hear DDL sing. They really want us to anticipate it for as long as possible. We’ve heard everyone sing except DDL, Judi Dench, and Sophia Loren. May I say, I loving Marion Cotillard’s voice and there was absolutely nothing wrong with Nicole Kidman’s singing in that clip they showed. She still got it.

As for Oprah, I found her kind of annoying. I really can’t watch her around Oscar season because she gets way too over the top. She couldn’t stop reminding the audience about the fact that she never had that amount of Oscar winners on the show. You could even tell that it made Kate Hudson uncomfortable for obvious reasons.

    46. The Natural November 19th, 2009 at 1:19 pm 46

“he also loved Columbus HP and didn`t Cuaron`s”

Totally untrue. He awarded Prisoner of Azkaban with a 3 1/2 star rating, very positive indeed. The only Potter film he didn’t care for was Order of the Phoenix.

    47. Aaron November 19th, 2009 at 3:49 pm 47

Jane Krakowski won the Tony for the revival of Nine a few years ago. A Call from the Vatican is a killer number, and I’m sure Penelope will do it justice!

    48. Dan November 19th, 2009 at 6:03 pm 48

I said 6 months ago, Day-Lewis is an odds on favorite for a nomination. If you were betting on the Vegas odds, he’d probably be in the top 3. The best actress category is the weakest it’s been in years, when you have two no names as predicted leaders. The Best Actor category is going to want to have some familiar names in the category to balance the interest in the award show.
Plus, DDL is a familiar and steady face to the Academy and he is doing something he has never done on film before. Sing. The Academy likes to reward actors who takes chances, or do something for the first time and succeed. See what that did for Depp, Kidman, Zelwegger, Zeta-Jones. Oscar nods. If he gets halfway decent reviews, he’s in.

I have to agree Ophrah was rather annoying. This was a press junket and all Oprah could focus on was gossip. I think whoever did Marion’s hair should have been slapped around a little she resembled Bette Davis in the “Corn is Green”. I thought Kidman looked great but thought her clip was the weakest. Cruz is captivating she resembles a very young Sophia.

I too noticed that no one was allowing anyone to hear DDL sing. I hope that’s not an omen.

Kate Hudson just giggled way too much but the clip was fantastic. Probably because it so was “up”. But from other venues I’ve heard it stated from some who’ve seen the film that the Hudson number could easily be removed from the film. I wouldn’t do it cause the energy level of the clip just draws your attention.

Was very strange to watch Oprah ignore the three other cast members. I mean except for a cursory mention she eliminated the three other women.

I did read somewhere that the song Loren does is a lullabye of sorts and is done quite well. At least Ophrah showed a bit of the banter between Dench and DDL. You can film a lot of singing and dancing but if there’s nothing to anchor it then it’s just a Busby Berkley movie

The one thing that stands out in my mind with Penelope is that she’s going through that very same phase Loren went through trying to master English. Sometimes it’s difficult to understand her. But then when you look at her who cares if you understand everything she says?

    51. Chance November 20th, 2009 at 3:26 pm 51

May I say that Marion Cotillard made me fall in love with her in this interview…more eloquent than half the people I work with.

    52. Kay November 21st, 2009 at 9:27 pm 52

      Oprah is an awful interviewer.

“The first time I saw The Hurt Locker, I had forgotten who the director was. As the film unfolded I kept saying to myself, “Wow, whoever directed this really has a unique intellect and highly focused directorial vision.” I knew that this film was different, that it had a depth not usually seen in a film set during wartime — but I didn’t know exactly how or why I was experiencing this reaction. When the end credits rolled, my “aha!” moment arrived. “So it’s a woman!” I thought, “It all makes sense to me now.”

Yet, I believe that Bigelow won the DGA — and quite possibly will win the Oscar — not because she’s female but because she did excellent work. Some voters may choose her to make some kind of political or feminist statement, but Bigelow’s name wouldn’t be on that ballot unless she deserved to be there.

Some claim that the dearth of awards recognition for female directors is because there are so few good female directors. To me, a statement like that ignores the fact that bias has prevented more women from getting good material to direct.”
