They won’t matter because Twilight has a built-in audience. Trust me, every kid I know is going to see it and they haven’t read, nor do they care a lick, about what the critics or the bloggers think.
This is your Twilight open thread. Have at it. As for me, I’m stuck seeing it since I have an eleven year-old who also believes the movies (and the books) are bad but feels compelled nonetheless.

Ahem, why is only Team Edward represented with a picture in this thrad? We all know that Jacob`s abs are so much better.
That said, reviews are not bad. They explicitly say the movie will please only fans which is exactly what it should do. I`m reading between lines and counting hours. This is going to be most awesome.
Ugh, I cannot believe we are going to have to suffer three years of this.
Maybe more if they decide to extend the saga beyond Breaking Dawn or break Dawn in 2 a la Deathly Hallows. How awesome that would be?
Ebert’s review is epic lulz.
It`s a fun read like all negative reviews. That`s why I never read raves. Boring.
I feel sorry for him and the rest of critics sweating to change people`s minds but, alas, to no avail. New Moon will be gigantic. Must be really frustrating for them to see how zero influence they have. Midnight can`t come soon enough!
TWILIGHT was like reading a teen mag though I’m 20 years too old for it. It was exciting and dump and fun. And I will sooo rent NEW MOON as well next year.
I have a bit of a crush on both Kendrick & Stewart so who knows, lol. Nonetheless it’s going to be bad, we know that. Like did anyone think Transformers 2 would be great, 400 & 800 million later Paramount isn’t too bum’d out about it. There’s even a chance for a third Transformers flick.
These type of movies are critics-proof. It does not matter how bad they are, people will spend money to see them. I don’t waste my time telling people how awful they might be. It’s almost as if you are talking to a brick wall. Plus, the movies are fun for a lot of people, so I wouldn’t want to rain in on their parade. That’s just wrong. With that said, it’s unlikely I’ll ever pay money to see the film. I’ve yet to read the books, and all the vampires look like members of late 90s boy bands. I don’t want my perception of vampires to change. It would throw me off, and create an imbalance in the world.
Maybe more if they decide to extend the saga beyond Breaking Dawn or break Dawn in 2 a la Deathly Hallows. How awesome that would be?

I think that this would pretty much KILL Kristen and Pattinson career. Too much of a good thing may be bad, imagine too much of a horrible thing?
The backlash can be really bad
Hey, to each his own, huh? Ms. Stewart is not a bad actress but I don’t know about Pattinson and Lautner. I thought that Ms. Stewart was pretty good in Panic Room. People make choices. Even for fluff like this.
I need to start rocking the shirtless peacoat is what I think.
The books are literally unreadable to me – they are horribly written. I enjoyed the first movie as far as that goes, but honestly, I only gave it the minimum passing grade. Kristen is good, I think, but Pattinson doesn’t seem to want to be there most of the time.
It’s all good fun. Especially for the youngsters!
#7 ” Like did anyone think Transformers 2 would be great…”
Lmao, yes, I did! I adore the first one!
I love the books and enjoyed the movies – it is fun and Rob is *hot* I will see New Moon a few times in the theatre – I love movies and The Twilight Saga it an obsession for me. I don’t care if they get bad reviews the critics can’t change my mind.
I want Kristen and Rob to have long careers as they both seem like nice unaffected people.
Tranformers 1 – great
Trnsformers 2 – sucked
I see a lot of criticism over Bella becoming a vampire for Edward and I simply don`t see why there`s such a fuss over this and zero fuss over original Edward&Bella – Viggo&Liv in LOTR. It`s the same thing only in reverse – the chick switches immortality for mortality to be with the mortal guy. In Twilight, Bella becomes immortal because Edward is. It`s the same thing and LOTR is even worse because Liv chooses to die when Viggo does because there`s no life for her without him or some crap. Like, seriously, this is masterpiece and Twilight is POS? Uh-oh, not buying.
Did the horrible reviews stopped people to go see 2012 or Transformers? No. I know it is not cool to see Twilight but so what? I know the guys think that they are stupid crap but for once the women are the ones driving the box office so for me it is already an accomplishment!
The preview for this movie has to be the absolute WORST piece of crap I have ever seen–and this has become an obsession for teenagers? Ugh.
OMG, boxoffice reports from overseas for NM are phenomenal! This is going to at least double Twilights numbers when all is said and done! Glad that the world caught Twimania and it isn`t only US phenomenon anymore. So happy! Few more hours of wait!
The biggest difference between LOTR and Twilight is the quality of the movie.
LOTR is great and Twilight is the piece of crap. Simply. For example – LOTR has far greater plot. In Twilight NOTHING actually happens. The film begins. You see that he loves her, she loves him (and that they have stupid dialogue in every scene they are on the screen), and there’s this handsome Indian boy who you would like to see nude but you have to wate till New Moon for that – and before something actually starts happening the movie ends.
The Twilight saga is great, easy on the eye fun stuff. Stop taking things too seriously. It isn’t out to win awards, its out to please its audience and it does that in abundance! The film is meant to be slow ….. there is more to come!!! This will be in the top 5 earners of the year even this late in the year! It is going to be humongous!!! Roll on tomorrow!
The other difference is the acting. Let’s be honest. No one in Twilight plays well – and that’s the problem (at least for me). In LOTR almost everyone (except Bloom) was very good (some people where even great – McKellen for instance).
In honor of this release and the wisdom of the other poster on this board named Kevin, I present you with…
THE TOP 5 FUNNIEST LINES FROM ROGER EBERT’S REVIEW OF “THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON”:
#5: Since they know it all and we know all, sitting through this experience is like driving a pickup in low gear though a sullen sea of Brylcreem
#4: The characters in this movie should be arrested for loitering with intent to moan
#3: You know you’re in trouble with a sequel when the word of mouth advises you to see the first movie twice instead.
#2: Bella (Kristen Stewart) is still living at home with her divorced dad (Billy Burke), a cop whose disciplinary policy involves declaring her grounded for the rest of her life and then disappearing so she can jump from cliffs, haunt menacing forests, and fly to Italy so the movie can evoke the sad final death scene from–why, hold on, it’s Romeo and Juliet! The very play Edward was reciting narcissistically and contemptuously in an opening scene.
#1: Yes, Edward (Robert Pattinson) is back in school, repeating the 12th grade for the 84th time. Bella sees him in the school parking lot, walking toward her in slow-motion, wearing one of those Edwardian Beatles jackets with a velvet collar, pregnant with his beauty. How white his skin, how red his lips. The decay of middle age may transform him into the Joker.
I love Ebert’s review. This whole vampire romance crap is definitely a fad that will be looked back upon in shame, just like boy bands of the late 90s and nu-metal crap like Limp Bizkit and Korn.
Apparently Roger Ebert doesn’t realize that no one is going to see the movie for it’s riveting story line.
To Chris, Korn actually has talent, not my kind of music but I can see the talent. Limp Bizkit is complete shit though.
To Yvette, Ebert knows that but that is not his job to talk about. He is supposed to give HIS opinion on the films merrits as a movie regardless of popularity or motives of movie goers.
chris138,thank you for making fun of korn/limp bizkit.and craig does it really matter if korn has talent ??? having talent isn’t really much better than musicians coming across/wanting to come across as smart/and having gazillions of musical knowledge/liking 400 musical genres and still doing crappy recordings.
It matters to me if they have talent because I don’t think all there recordings are crappy and there talent shows through on some of there stuff like Got the Life, Freak on a Leash, Coming Undone and there remake of The Wall. And who gives a shit if they mix a bunch of music genres? All music today is a result of mixing genres.
craig,you like them.fine whatever. i don’t.
and craig i don’t mind or care about music mixing/genre combine things i just have zero interest in korn’s take on whatever it is their combing.and i also may have zero interest in those genres separately either.
so i’m underwhelmed by their talent.and pretty annoyed since i wish bigger alternative could have gotten away from the riff rock whatever slant on metal/’for the guys’ stuff vibe a bit.and i’m also little whatever to praise their talent since they were so big/ultra popular for a bit. what about all those bands with talent that got nothing.rather they’d get some praise…
‘All music today is a result of mixing genres’. and shouldn’t we have gotten a more unpredictable mix of things than what korn put together ???
but whatever chris.there’s obviously zero either of us could say to change the other view on this.
but then again i was always more a dreampop/noisy guitar/weird alternative kid. and it was sort of painful to see the sort of stuff i got into alternative to avoid( yes this includes stuff like korn.sorry that’s my take…) become the biggest things in alternative.
while, things i liked had zero chance of breaking through * even if* they got the big major label deal etc…
and speaking of combining genres. the only new music i really listen to is mash ups/and bastard pop stuff. ha ha
love those…
Well, jeez. Sorry I mentioned Korn. Let’s just stick to making fun of Limp Bizkit then.
Anyways, yeah. Point being is that this whole thing is a fad. A very. Annoying. Fad.
No serious movie critic thought is his/her mission to put or don’t people in theaters. In fact, criticism in all of the forms is not about that. Is not about tell you should eat in that restaurant, or admire that painter in that museum, or go to that movie.
Is a way to increase the way that art touch you, for those who are interested in cinema, books, food, or whatever, for more than that the single moment in which we are consuming it. It’s a form of knowledge dedicated to help your opinion to be more complex, improved, fill of nuances. And I think it healthy when you read the reviews after you saw the moivie, read the book, etc.
At 19h P.M, here in my country I leave a theatre after a session of “Law Abiding Citizen”. In the hall of the multiplex at least 50 teens girls and one boy are already waiting, since 17h the maneger told me, for the midnight session of “New Moon”, which is completely sold out. And you know what? Cynical as I am from time to time, if a serious desire to mock that, that kind of thing is cool.
It shows how somethinh like a simple movie or a book could be truly importanto to a person – let’s be clear, in this particulary case, to a girl. Doesn’t matter if when she turns 25 she will be ashmed of it. I know a sister friend’s who saw “Titanic” 61 times, collect the tickets, and nowadays is studying to be a brain surgery, and of course, laughs of that fanaticism. I kinow a man that wants to be a candidate to a serious politic charge next year in my country, and weeps like a two year old everitime he saw “Return of the Jedi”.
But once upon a time that stuff was importante to her, to him, to her, to his trajectory as a person. And that’s terrific.
But the first “Twilight” movie is just 5/10, IMO.
I opened Rotten Tomatoes, and the first Feature that showed was the “New World Premiere Gallery” with the three leads and their paparazzi smiles. I laughed because just above and to the side of it is a Wendy’s ad that reads, “Our beef is fresh, never frozen” and “You know when it’s real.” Yeah, I know, it’s not THAT funny, it just struck me right and made me laugh. It’s late and I should go to bed.
The problem is that tweens don’t know Twilight is horribly written because all of the other books they read are too. Even the literature read in school English classes is going down in quality these days… and if teens are forced to read a real novel, they skim it or use sparknotes or some other short cut (or don’t read it at all) and are then proud of the fact that they got through a year without reading a single book. How sad the state of things is getting…
Twilight is so ridiculously sexist and laden with disturbing mormon thumping messages its sickening.
just like all panned blockbusters… transformers 2 remember?
one of the best pan from village voice
Alone of all the earnest players in this turgidly euphemistic melodrama, Sheen seems to grasp that the only way you can keep a straight face through this choked-up virginity is to carry it way into camp.
This was terrific! Loved it! OMG, I`m still so giddy after midnight screening! Everyone was great! Love, love this movie! It was amazing experience to watch it with true fans. We were screaming every time someone takes his shirt off and that means a lot, lololol! Wonderful, wonderful movie! Team Jacob forever!
#20 I commented on LOTR romance not the movie as a whole. If twilight romance is crap so are Viggo&Liv because she does the same thing like Bella – changes her life status into his (Bella chooses immortality, Liv mortality to be with the guy and both are defined by men in their life). Plus, in twilight, love triangle actually makes sense because Bella is caught between two really beautiful, really brave guys of her age who care about her. In LOTR, that misguided attempt at love triangle should`ve been cut out entirely because Viggo would never dump his incredibly gorgeous spring chicken for Karl Urban`s wallpaper aunt. Like, seriously, they couldn`t cast a young, beautiful actress to be a reasonable competition to Liv? Like Scarlett? There was no suspense who Viggo would choose because there was huge discrepancy in looks and age between two women and there was no way that young and beauitful Liv wouldn`t win.Like, duh! OTOH, Tay and R-Patz are two super hot guys whose characters are teenagers. So Bella`s dilema was real. Triangle is real. I`m just pointing out that when it comes to romance (which is in the backburner of the story but still) LOTR is just like twilight and even worse. There. You can find shitty romance in a good movie and that should be more criticized than Twilight because it sticks like a sour thumb.
#35 I`m sick of people going “Sheen and Dakota did Twilight to pay the morgage” and crap. How about they actually wanted to be in the series? It`s an amazing and popular series and good on Summit for casting all those greats and reminding people that Catalina Sandino Moreno, Q`orianka Kilcher are still alive and kicking. Besides, Sheen deserves to be in big movies after years of flying under radar and suffering humilation when Kate dumped him for UW director and what not. So, yeah, all the Twilight glory is just the happy ending. BTW, Anna Kendrick was awesome, small screen time but great scene.
#36 Glad you enjoyed it Bambi!
Luuuved it, thanks!
While I don’t get the slightest appeal of the interspecies romance between a vegetarian bloodsucker, an emo deadpan girlfriend and an insecure teenager werewolf, the popularity of this series among females is undeniably humongous. New Moon is breaking records everywhere it opens.
‘New Moon’ May Have Set All-Time Midnights Record, Besting ‘Harry Potter 6′ & ‘Dark Knight’
http://www.deadline.com/hollywood/phenomenal-breaking-records-new-moon-doing-dark-knight-midnight-numbers/
“The movie took in AUS$1.7 million ($1.6 million). It sailed past the previous Australian midnight record set by “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith”
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3ie595ec28836e2d88c9b57363cb9de6e3
This is the same Roger Ebert that gave “2012″ 3.5 stars out of 4, correct?
New Moon just has two awkward teenagers staring at each other and a 16 year old taking his shirt off for two hours. I’d rather watch the world being destroyed for a couple of hours.
A.J. this is awful news. God damn it people, what is wrong with you?? I don’t mind entertainment once in a while, but jeez this is way too much. I guess we have a lot of misguided perceptions in this country on what love is. (stare at a vampire for five minutes and declare him your soulmate for the rest of your life).
If teens read better books, maybe Twilight wouldn’t be such a hit. I would like to actually know the number of teens who have read “1984″ compared to the number who have read the Twilight series. I am not very optimistic about Orwell’s chances.
Nick,
Sadly something worse is coming down the way.
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2009/11/new-moon-smashes-potter-midnight-ticket-sales-record.html
“Two people close to the pictures said the exact gross, which is still being calculated by Summit Entertainment, could be as high as $26 million.”
You know it is the entertainment industry not fucking brain surgery – if people enjoy it then that is great and it is bringing money to a sorely needed industry.
I hated 2012 that to me was really a crap movie but that is my opinion and I am happy that some theatre goers actually liked it.
Keep the money rolling in so more movies can be bank rolled.
Onto to the Twilight books I work in a library and this series has young people reading again and even if it isn’t a literary classic kids reading is great.
“As for me, I’m stuck seeing it since I have an eleven year-old who also believes the movies (and the books) are bad but feels compelled nonetheless.”
Funny, I have a niece at a similar age and in a similar case. She only liked the first book, she thinks the others are quite crappy but will go to se the movies anyway. Why? No idea. That, together with her confessing to having seeing Jennifer’s Body too, prompted me to have an uncle-niece talk about consumerism
Poor girl, she was too civilized and listened to me.
As for myself, I’m obviously not the demographics these movies aim at. I watched the first one on TV a few days ago. I thought it wasn’t too bad -the Happening kind of bad- but that there was nothing remarkable about it either. Just a Hollywood movie. I think that’s the best I can say about it.
I don’t have an opinion about New Moon because it’ll be a while before I see it. But for anybody craving a strange and very real feeling vampire take that’s sexy and creepy beyond anything in recent memory, you have Thirst to look forward to. Saw it last night and it’s on par with Let the Right One In, except with more fucking and sucking.
I gave Twilight a 2/100 (that’s right, an out of 10 scale didn’t rate it low enough for my liking), and thought New Moon was a worse book than Twilight, but good lord, this movie shocked me. Chris Weitz eviscerated Stephenie Meyer’s material and made his own movie out of it, and while it’s very flawed, this is…a good movie.
http://postavant.com/2009/11/review-the-twilight-saga-new-moon-chris-weitz-2009/
Lengthy, but it goes against the grain of every review I’ve read. I’m…I’m really surprised.
LMAO Ryan, that should run in ads for the film.
Ryan Adams calls ‘Thirst’ “‘Let the Right One In’…with more fucking and sucking.”
Amen to “LOTROI with more fucking and sucking”.
That said, just got back from second NM viewing and it`s getting better. It`s such a wonderful movie that improved on the source material.
11/20/09 – The day the entire female population went full retard.
Oh, please! $80 mio opening day just proves that it`s very easy for movies with rabid built-in fandom to open big. Much trickier part is getting to milestones, particullary $300 mio and up. Especially for frontloaded movies. NM has $200+ mio guaranteed but not the rest of it. We`ll see what the legs are going to be like. But all said and done, it`s incredible number and shows that $100 mio opening day isn`t far off as I cna see quite a few movies pull this feat (IM2, any of remaining HPs, Batman 3, The HObbit, remaining Twilights have a good shot if they open on Friday instead of Wednesday).
Ew, i hate New Moon. Oh Bambi is the new Afrika now?! You irritated me, gal. Stop over-praised New Moon. Stop it.
I can`t, I love it so much! And this is NM thread,no? But I`m not going to bring it up on other threads anymore unless someone provokes me.
Also, as a big Radiohead fan, I just have to say that Thom Yorke should be ashamed of himself. That song (which was easily the best thing about this movie) should have been on a Radiohead album, not the fucking New Moon soundtrack. You fucking owe us big time, dude.
LOL @50 – That lightened up my day, Kirk. Just when I was going to cut my wrists at seeing the cinematic facepalm that was Twilight breaking TDK’s box office record.
Like I told Sasha earlier this week, I really do wish it was Stephanie Meyer instead of poor Paul Sheldon that had to endure the company of Annie Wilkes in “Misery.” Of course, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if most Twi-heads don’t even know what I’m talking about.
EBERT’S review is epic!!!!
gave 1 star.
twilight saga has an interesting idea of a vamp loves girl but sadly the whole fucking saga is a waste.
i have nothing against robert pattison. he could be a great actor. his just in the wrong film. he could be a crazed psychopath or a killer or a villain. just look at his face. no mercy and no remorse.
anyways, TWILIGHT sucks and all you fangirls should shut the fuck up!
long live TDK’s BO champ. or TITANIC.
don’t let the TWILIGHT SHIT MOVIES go past TITANIC or TDK!!!!
both movies are fantastic!!!! no unholy movies shall go pass these films!!!!
Lmao, seriously, how could Twitanic/The Dark Twight sink Titanic and TDK when is all said and done? It`s the most frontloaded movie in history and it`s catering to women almost exclusively. There`s nowhere to go from there but down. Don`t worry, it`ll be lucky to break $300 mio domestically which is incredible for a movie costing well bellow $100 mio. OTOH, Titanic and TDK needed those billions because they costed too much to begin with. Everyone is and will be a smash in its own right but Titanic and TDK will remain unseated by Twi Twi.
That said, I`m having a ball with all the hilarious bad reviews but my fave quote is from Peter Traver`s review: “You can almost hear the young cast thinking, “Is that acting? It looks hard.” Gold.
