New York Magazine gave “not-so-great” review for the Road. They call it very depressing which is quite normal giving the book. I dont know how that overall mood will affect the movie’s chance but i think based on the trailers Viggo should get best actor nomination

I never been too big a fan of Viggo. Eastern Promises was good, but A History of Violence pissed me off more than just about any other movie I saw this decade.

I didn`t like HoV much either, but he was good in it and amazing in EP. I hate Bello. She`s so annoying on the screen and annoying, stuck up and full of self-importance off it. Oh, and she sucked donkey balls as Weisz`s replacement in The Mummy 3. I don`t know what she was thinking when she signed up for it but if you can`t lighten up and you think looking constipated is the way to do a supposedly entertaining adventure flick, than you`re not nearly as talented as some critics make you to be.

That said, must they ask about that stupid rabit soup story over and over again? I`m sure there`ve been other interesting things in the actor`s life worth asking about.

Mortenson’s low-key presence is refreshing — and quite a departure from some of his characters.

His acting ability is well respected, so even if The Road doesn’t take off commercially, his chances of an Oscar nomination are hopeful if not assured.

Viggo seems nice and down-to-earth, but his performances are always just shy of being “great.” I don’t know what it is. Maybe he is just too mellow and restrained.

Bambi, I must have missed the donkey-ball sucking scene in the Mummy 3. I’m frankly surprised that got past the censors. Nonetheless, I have to question the worth of any “I hate…” criticism. Especially when it’s an actress who is widely respected. Perhaps you should go to IMDB forums.

      some men are incredible…

Look at him in this clip. He doesn’t look a day over 35 :)

    8. bambi November 21st, 2009 at 12:15 pm 8

Arjay, I didn`t say Bello was not respected, just that I don`t get the hype and that she was terrible in The Mummy 3 (there are reviews to prove too). And that she`s full of herself. Not going to imdb.com unless Ryan and Sasha ban me.

I would be very sorry to see Viggo M leave film. Over time I’ve really grown to admire his screen performances, particularly HoV and Eastern Promises. In articles I’ve read on him he truly seems like a renaissance man – this rabbit story exemplifying just a few of the many non-traditional (now, anyway) skills. I guess he’s also quite devoted to his son, speaks several languages and is an artist, writer and many other things.

    11. Sally in Chicago November 21st, 2009 at 7:02 pm 11

His greatest role was in Carlito’s Way. I think it was his first movie. I watch Carlito over and over and over and he gave a mano a mano performance to Pacino’s and you can see Pacino’s respect for him in that scene, where’s in the wheelchair.

Now on the flip side, watching the Letterman seg — is he gay? He’s either very shy or in the closet. I never pegged him for gay, but I never read where he has a woman either.

    12. Ryan Adams November 21st, 2009 at 7:14 pm 12

Viggo was once married to punk-rock legend Exene Cervenka, and they have a 22-year-old son.

    13. The Natural November 21st, 2009 at 9:57 pm 13

What, so now being shy means you’re gay? Geeze, the list never ends, does it? I think everyone’s gay by now.

    14. allen November 21st, 2009 at 10:41 pm 14

viggo is on his way to the to five, I have a gut feeling

    15. bambi November 21st, 2009 at 10:56 pm 15

he gave Karl Urban a tongue kiss but who wouldn`t?

Anyways, Ryan, why aren`t we discussing lukewarm word on Invictus(toldya), Twitter raves for LB and SAG eating up Nine at the screening? Where`s the thread?

    16. K Trout November 21st, 2009 at 11:38 pm 16

      Viggo’s lookin’ a little face-lifted in that clip…

    17. dlen November 22nd, 2009 at 12:20 am 17

I’ve said it before, but as fine as The Road is it didn’t move me and you need a little more uplift after 2 hours of heavy going. Viggo’s perf is good but not great.

I happened to have the opportunity to interview Viggo earlier this year (with 3 other writers)when he was in Australia promoting Good. He is very quietly spoken and judging by his dress sense that day (there were no photographers) if he is gay he’s not one of the fashionable ones!

BTW Peter Weir’s Witness was Viggo’s first film.

I’m watching ROTK right now and I think overlooking Viggo was a massive oversight. If he’s as good in The Road as he is in this he totally should be nominated.

    20. JoeyG November 22nd, 2009 at 4:48 pm 20

      still watching it…

“The first time I saw The Hurt Locker, I had forgotten who the director was. As the film unfolded I kept saying to myself, “Wow, whoever directed this really has a unique intellect and highly focused directorial vision.” I knew that this film was different, that it had a depth not usually seen in a film set during wartime — but I didn’t know exactly how or why I was experiencing this reaction. When the end credits rolled, my “aha!” moment arrived. “So it’s a woman!” I thought, “It all makes sense to me now.”

Yet, I believe that Bigelow won the DGA — and quite possibly will win the Oscar — not because she’s female but because she did excellent work. Some voters may choose her to make some kind of political or feminist statement, but Bigelow’s name wouldn’t be on that ballot unless she deserved to be there.

Some claim that the dearth of awards recognition for female directors is because there are so few good female directors. To me, a statement like that ignores the fact that bias has prevented more women from getting good material to direct.”
