We’re closing the giveaway as of now. Feel free to continue to add your predictions if you like!
I just want to give thanks for you fabulous readers, some of whom have been here since the early days, going back a full decade. This site wouldn’t be what it is without you. And thanks for the enriching, informative and timely comments! I also want to thank my partner in crime, Ryan Adams, who brings so much talent and intelligence to the site. Here is some space to share your thoughts, even if you aren’t in America and aren’t celebrating Thanksgiving. It’s November, almost time for the first real leg of the Oscar race. If you had to predict the Oscars today, what would you say is headed to win? Feel free to name just the top categories, or do all of them. It’s your choice.
AND Oscar giveaway!
I’m having a sad Thanksgiving myself, I don’t mind saying. A close relative of mine passed away yesterday and it has made me feel a little George Bailey today, hence the sappy posting. I do wish you all a happy and healthy one.
Onward to your predictions. I will be choosing TWO WINNERS at random – that means I go to Random.org and have them choose a number. I have to first check on IP addresses to make sure no one double posted. Your predictions will be your entry — feel free to comment after that as I will only count those who put in their Oscar winner predictions.
The prize is a choice between the shooting script for The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call: New Orleans or Heads On and We Shoot: The Making of Where the Wild Things Are
. These are hardcover bound, extremely beautiful and super cool to have.

SHERLOCK HOLMES for the win.
Sorry for your loss, Sasha. I am one of your ten-year-old posters, but I look even younger now than I did then, mainly due to Ryan making me laugh so much. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, and to him and his.
We have some yank pals coming over to our place in Barcelona this evening, so we’re throwing a Thanksgiving dinner for them. One caveat: no American football on the TV!
I think Precious is winning. I know it’s still early, but I think so. It’ll be like Slumdog Millionaire last year.

I think Christian McKay is getting Best Supporting over Christoph Waltz. If they wouldn’t give Ralph Fiennes an Oscar for playing a Nazi in Schindler’s List they’re not about to give one to Waltz. And McKay’s notices are every bit as phenomenal as Waltz’s.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
Precious is not this year`s Slumdog because it`s not happy-go-lucky despite some dark clouds with bubbly characters, catchy music tunes, Pinto`s cover girl poses and stupid bathtub-o-money homicide/suicide/who cares. Also, unlike Danny Boyles star turn as the director, Daniels is totally in the shadow of his cast. Oh, and good on people who can sit through Mo`nique`s shocking monologue again and again but I`ve been disturbed for life. And I expect the Reader voters will be too since she`s not talking about the Winslet boobies but hers.

Precious is not this year’s Slumdog. It’s 2000’s Requiem For a Dream, another downer of a movie that nobody would want to watch more than once. Hardly the sort of thing a Best Picture should be.

A hideously overweight woman is tortured by her mother, is raped by her father, with whom she has two children is uplifting? That’s a lot of heavy lifting. I hire people to do that sort of thing for me. I prefer UP to DOWN.
Hunter, go home and celebrate with your family. Your snide comments about the girl’s weight (ha ha, that’s original!) are cruel and out of spirit. Happy Thanksgiving. Now get lost.
yes – it’s all that happens in the film, and yes, some scenes are hard to watch – but this woman who has been beaten down, rises above all of that when she is taught and believes that she can. I was really surprised at how happy i felt when i left the theater.

YES! I really spread the love but seeing the craziness of doing something like this even before G.G & SAG nom’s and The NBR announcement. But I still see this year being fairly spread out. No Slumdog or No Country that’s going to ride it straight to the podium. No SWEEP potential. Split between The Hurt Locker, Lovely Bones, Up in the Air, Nine and either Precious or Invictus.

WARNING! Winners chosen by Random.org may recieve nothing. Contests on Awards Daily may just be a hoax. You may be left with your dick hanging in the wind.
From 1eyedjoker, winner of tickets to Five Minutes of Heaven yet never recieved them.
I wonder if Precious may be peaking too early? I haven’t seen it, but it also seems too much like Slumdog Millionaire last year.
Therefore:
Best Picture – Up in the Air
I think this will really get people hooked in when its released in mid-December. It’ll really sum up the past year. This could also work against it.
Best Actor – George Clooney
Therefore, this may be the end result, and Precious ends up winning.
Best Actress – Gabby Sidibe
Precious will be far more successful than An Education, and Gabby would be a better overall story.
Best Director – Lee Daniels
Another good story.
Best Supporting Actor – Christoph Waltz
This may be more hope than actual prediction.
Best Supporting Actress – Mo’Nique
This almost seems like a sure thing, even with the movie peaking early.

Lovely Bones ain`t winning shit. Support just isn`t there (most of the positive reviews are from sites that always give Jackson and geek movies thumbs up – AICN, Empire, Total Film, Den of Geek, The Sun) and main criticism by critics who matter (regardless of what one thinks of them) is that it`s effects overkill. Also, in its own house, it`s going up against UITA which is locked and loaded for BP, BD, BA,BSA and BAS. Paramount won`t suddenly split their funds that they claim they barely have to heavily campaign two movies. They may push Ronan and Tucci since they have no one in BAss and BSAss but I`d be shocked if they undermined UITA and Reitman by giving it all to Bones and Jackson despite worse reception.

Susan Sarandon jumps off LB train (real deal, not another “Bambi tries to be a smartass” news):
Sarandon not interested in ‘Bones’ fantasy
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/news/a188551/sarandon-not-interested-in-bones-fantasy.html
Susan Sarandon has admitted that the fantastical elements of Peter Jackson’s latest film The Lovely Bones did not appeal to her.
The actress stars as Grandma Lynn in the Alice Sebold adaptation, taking charge of the Salmon family after the murder of their eldest daughter Susie.
“I’m really curious to see it again because the first time you see it all you notice is the things that are missing, you can’t really enjoy it,” Sarandon said at the film’s world premiere in London.
“When I read the book I wasn’t interested in heaven or the in-between, so it was interesting to see how [Jackson] saw it. My mind didn’t go there at all, I was totally identifying with the family.”
I`m sure something was lost in translation but when your cast memeber can`t muster up any praise, than there`s serious trouble ahead.

Your conviction is strong Tom, I like it. I dont believe it but I like it!

Right now I’m leaning towards Up in the Air taking the top prizes.
I think this is going to be a really interesting year–I can’t see any one film dominating the nominations this year. Hopefully there’ll be some variety among the critics awards winners, with no category being dominated by any particular film or actor/actress (though I’m thinking that foreign film will likely be dominated by the White Ribbon, and Mo’Nique possibly in Supporting Actress). It makes things so much more intriguing that way.

………….
Yes !
Rules of the game have changed.
There will be movies made to win awards at the Critics choice Awards, at the People Choice Awards or at the Kansas City critics Awards. These will be Movies dealing with American-centered subjects.
And there will be movies made to win at the Globes or at the Academy Awards. Movies made for the Worlwide audience.

No guts, no glory so…
BP:Sherlock Holmes
BD:Guy Richie
BA:RDJ
BA:SaBu
BSA: Christoph Waltz
BSA:Mo`nique
The reason being:
“Early polling for writer-director James Cameron’s $310-million “Avatar” from Fox isn’t as favorable as it is for Warner Bros.’ “Sherlock Holmes.” The latter film comes out a week after “Avatar” yet still has significantly higher “definite interest.” At the same time, young girls — the fanatical ticket-buyers who pushed Cameron’s Oscar-winning “Titanic” into the box-office record books — are so far showing cool curiosity in Dec. 18’s “Avatar,” preferring by an almost 2-1 margin Dec. 23’s “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel,” also from Fox.”

If Holmes gets great reviews and pulls a boxoffice upset over Avatar or at least becomes a surprise boxoffice success, the sky`s the limit. Plus, there`s Guy Richie comeback which they won`t be able to resist.
Yeah, SHERLOCK HOLMES is looking very good, positionally. And won’t it be fun watching all the prognosticators who have ignored it all year get egg on their faces?
I was surprised about mostly everybody focused on Mulligan to win. Do you know that the BAFTA has chosen Emily Blunt British Actress of the year this year?, The same thing they did to Winslet last year?? which Winslet eventually won the Oscar, Seems to me Emily Blunt could possibly get nominated and bump Mulligan out of the top 5, and did you know that Cornish beat Mulligan again at the London Film Festival for Best Actress,Mulligan could possibly get snubbed,
and by the way Meryl Streep should win this year she had the best reviewed performance of the year much better than Mulligan and Sidibe combined.
I think Mulligan was overhyped.
Hey Sasha, did not fully read your post (skim reading at work) but just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear of your loss, and thank you for bringing me so much new and joy over the past 5 years (?) I have been coming to this site.
You are my very first internet read in the morning, and my last at night.
