Congrats to Iggy for winning today’s Poster Precedent Match-Game, and for today’s Best Gasp:

It reminded me of Ocean’s Eleven. Relieved to see they didn’t use the same motto:
“They’re having so much fun it’s illegal.”

    Ah….What about Conan O’Brien???

  2. Dan September 26th, 2008 at 1:09 am 2

Much better than the teaser trailer! Very interesting concept for a trailer. And I’m glad that they toned down the “Look! It’s Tom Cruise smirking” crap from the teaser.

  3. JuliaLambert September 26th, 2008 at 1:53 am 3

    Wow!
Yes, it’s better than the first one. It’s a fantastic trailer. And Cruise looks good. I’m not the biggest fan, so I’m always sceptical about him , but in this role I think he’ll be great. I hope so, I love movies like this.

  4. Dominik September 26th, 2008 at 1:58 am 4

It looks pathetic, just horrible IMO… looks like Disney doing a WWII-epic…

  5. Ryan Adams September 26th, 2008 at 2:19 am 5

It’s a really tidy Third Reich, isn’t it Dominik?
    Like Nazi World in Orlando.

But Bryan Singer has never disappointed me before.

  6. PR September 26th, 2008 at 3:30 am 6

It’s a fantastic trailer! Good done!

  7. elessar September 26th, 2008 at 6:57 am 7

Dominik: clearly you and I have differing tastes, but your response is more qualified as pathetic than the trailer. There’s nothing remotely “Disney” about it.

Ryan: What’s your problem with the trailer?

Personally, I liked the teaser, but this one better captures the feel the actual film will have.

  8. Ryan Adams September 26th, 2008 at 7:14 am 8

No problem with the trailer at all. I like it. I was being flippant, and only teasing. It’s just a very clean and well-swept version of the historic ambiance, that’s all.

We’re used to seeing period sets and locations that are more dinged and gritty. But it’s fair to assume the areas where Hitler hung out would have been kept pristine and as flawless as possible.

Ryan – you liked SUPERMAN RETURNS?

  10. Sasha Stone September 26th, 2008 at 7:55 am 10

I don’t think it’s bad at all but am slightly perplexed by Tom Cruise’s American accent. Is he supposed to be German or…? I’m rooting for it. I hope its good.

  11. S.T. Stevens September 26th, 2008 at 8:56 am 11

I’m not so much perplexed by Cruise’s American accent in particular, so much as the lack of cohesiveness in the cast, accent wise. You have Cruise doing an American accent; Branagh, Nighy, Wilkenson and the other British cast members doing their respective U.K. accents, and then German actors like Christian Berkel doing a German accent. All of these actors are playing born-and-bred Germans, mind you. I’m not asking for them to all do German accents, I just want some uniformity.

All told, I’m still incredibly wary of this movie. It does have the Singer-McQuarrie pedigree, but the numerous production delays, pushed back release dates, negative buzz and yes the accents aren’t making this flick look very promising.

  12. JR September 26th, 2008 at 9:00 am 12

Sasha I was thinking the same thing – why is Tom Cruise the only one with an American accent and everyone is running around with a German one? Thats my only problem with the trailer. The film has officially made a blip on my oscar radar.

  13. Ryan Adams September 26th, 2008 at 9:05 am 13

I guess no accent is better than a bad accent. Maybe there will other American accents scattered among the cast so it won’t be too jarring.

  14. Dominik September 26th, 2008 at 9:05 am 14

Of course I shouldn´t judge the whole movie by it´s trailer, but it just looks like a typical hollywood action-movie, Tom Cruise looks and acts like Tom Cruise, nice costumes and flags and flashy explosions all around… it feels false. I want it dirty, edgy and a bit demonic- nothing you can eat some popcorns while watching and in the end you say: Well, nice action stuff!
By the way, anyone agrees that the scene where Cruise shaves and dresses himself echoes a similar scenes with Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson in Schindlers List?

  15. Jane September 26th, 2008 at 9:23 am 15

I agree the accent issue is a huge problem. No accent is better than a bad one but this mix of accents will, I think, make it difficult to buy into this. I’ve nothing against Tom Cruise but this does feel too much like MI4 with some German costuming

  16. elessar September 26th, 2008 at 9:39 am 16

Thanks for the clarification, Ryan. Sarcasm does not translate well in an online post.

Sasha: I’m not concerned at all by the lack of accents, as it would have sounded quite ridiculous to hear Tom with a German accent. Branagh, Nighy, and Stamp didn’t sound much different than they usually do (although it is easier for a Brit to sound German than an American).

ST: True about the release dates, but the fact that it was moved UP has to be a good sign (the earlier switch from 6/27 to 10/3 was also a good move as this is clearly not a summer film). Re the production: the bulk of filming was completed on schedule in Germany. The opening battle could not be filmed until later because Morrocco’s weather wasn’t cooperating.

  17. Matthew September 26th, 2008 at 9:48 am 17

I’m glad they aren’t doing faux German accents. It’s like what they did with “Amadeus” and “Marie-Antoinette”. If only Tom Hulce was in this, then it’d be even more awesome.

  18. Elizabeth September 26th, 2008 at 9:56 am 18

That was an excellent trailer. It’s sad to me that Tom Cruise’s public personality has overshadowed his talent. Oh and ditto to Ryan, an American accent trumps a bad accent any day.

  19. sonnymoscoso September 26th, 2008 at 10:28 am 19

whats the problem with the accent? i mean, come on… everyone is trying to find a reason to bash this movie, if its not the accents or bryan synger then is the classic… I HATE TOM CRUISE… come on, if any of you think this trailer is bad, you are retarded, its beautifully directed, edited, and it looks like the acting is top notch, look at the locations, the desert, the angle shots, even the music….
im glad a few people have seen it and all i’ve read is that this film is awesome… and cruise does it AGAIN…

  20. ryan September 26th, 2008 at 10:33 am 20

Personally, I’m relieved that they didn’t try the German accents for the most part. Even if Tom Cruise did it well, I’m sure it’d always feel out of place. Or we could get something bad… like Harrison Ford in K-19: The Widowmaker. I think in that case, we can all agree it would’ve been fine if Ford just spoke in his normal voice.

As long as the intensity and emotion of the character is there, I don’t care how accurate the accents are. And we’ll get different accents, because we have (as advertised) an international cast.

I still want Tom Cruise to win an Oscar someday (he should’ve won of Magnolia… and Born on the Fourth of July is debatable–it’s tough to speak against Daniel Day-Lewis).

And I know I’ve said this before, but I think we’ll get a supporting nomination for either Bill Nighy or Kenneth Branagh.

  21. ryan September 26th, 2008 at 10:35 am 21

one more thing…. I was not saying Ford’s accent was the only thing keeping K-19 from being anything close to good. Haha.

  22. Alfredo September 26th, 2008 at 10:39 am 22

I’m still not 100% convinced. The trailer did peak my interest but overall I still have hold huge reservations about the film. I’m also in the what the fuck is up with the accents?! group. I’m sorry but how about getting an actor that can do a german accent? I guess that would be asking to much from a studio film.

  23. Ryan Adams September 26th, 2008 at 11:19 am 23

“Ryan – you liked SUPERMAN RETURNS?”

    Yes. Brilliant.

  24. Cliff September 26th, 2008 at 11:25 am 24

Looks good. Not usually a fan of Tom but he looks good here, except for the uber-Americanness.

  25. Liz September 26th, 2008 at 11:51 am 25

I find it interesting that so many people are complaining about Tom Cruise’s accent, yet many reviews I’ve read of “Che” point out that almost none of the actors’ accents actually match the nationalities of the real-life people. It’s just a hodgepodge of random accents from Spanish-speaking countries from around the world, none of them historically accurate.

I understand that it’s easier for us to spot differences in accents for English-speaking actors, but this seems like a bit of a double-standard.

  26. Tufas September 26th, 2008 at 11:53 am 26

Superman Returns —– no. Just no.

This trailer turned out to be better than I thought it would be and now I am *somewhat* interested in this movie. Still, Tom is so american in all his lines, it will be a hard time to suspend disbelief when the actual film arrives

  27. Daren September 26th, 2008 at 1:59 pm 27

I am more interested now, I was intrigued by it with the cast (mostly Branagh and Nighy) but the trailer looks good. I hope this is good, and the accents were a little weird but by the end of the featurette I was used to them so it wont be bothering me too much.

  28. Dan September 26th, 2008 at 2:00 pm 28

Matthew: “I’m glad they aren’t doing faux German accents. It’s like what they did with “Amadeus” and “Marie-Antoinette”. If only Tom Hulce was in this, then it’d be even more awesome.”

I’m glad their not doing bad German accents, as well. However, the accents in Amadeus and Marie-Antoinette served a thematic purpose, which was to make the characters more accessible to today’s audience so that we could see that they were perceived just like modern celebrities are today. Amadeus was the punk rocker of his time, and Marie-Antoinette was the Paris Hilton of her day, so to speak.

  29. Dan September 26th, 2008 at 2:06 pm 29

One more thing. While I do agree there is a double standard regarding accents and English speaking actors, I must ask: If everyone in “Schindler’s List” spoke with a fine German accent, why couldn’t Singer have cast actors who could in his film?

I once read someone write that as a German, it was bizarre to see a German national hero speaking in an American accent. She said it would be like seeing George Washington speaking with a French accent.

I’m afraid the critics are going to predisposed to bash this film, even if it’s pretty good. Unless the film is great, critics will rip it apart.

  30. iggy September 26th, 2008 at 4:01 pm 30

So, is there any money attached to the prize? ;)

Even though I’m not for this superfast editing in trailers (really, it can’t be any good for human eyes), it’s somehow refreshing to see a WWII movie trailer without that Schindler’s List patina and moving to tears background music.

  31. Ryan Adams September 26th, 2008 at 4:23 pm 31

Not cash, Iggy, but you win a $10,000 Washington Mutual investment portfolio. We’ll be transferring the stock to your account immedia– *poof!* …doh!

yeah, I almost posted a warning for epileptics about the strobe-light editing at the climax of the trailer, but I worried that joking about anything related to Tom Cruise or Bryan Singer would incite a lot of wrath I didn’t need. Friday Fight Night is already contentious enough with the debate upon us. Unless McCain suspends it because of a tummy ache or something.

  32. Friedl September 27th, 2008 at 1:08 am 32

Well this has certainly piqued my interest far more than the original trailer which was released in SA, which looked boring and ridiculous & made me think I’d never take Bryan Singer seriously again.

I’m still lightyears from convinced of Tom Cruise as a German. I think the casting is crap & far too “Hollywood”, but maybe that’s the point. I’m a bit of an authentisism-o-phile, so perhaps I’m being unnecessarily dismissive.

Certianly this trailer has justified this film’s existence for me (altho I agree, the trailer has a bit too much of a climax….), and I will definately watch this now, albeit skeptically, as opposed to previously where I planned to laugh at anyone on their way to watch it.

I’m not sure where I stand on the accents – i agree no accent is better than rubbish accent, but… come on – a bit of uniformity, or just the slightest effort? Having an inter-national cast with a wild array of accents playing a bunch of thorough Germans just seems funny & lazy to me. I struggle to see past it.
(altho seeing a bunch of Germans talking to each other in English, with heavy accents is just as laughable, but at least jsutifiable.)

  33. Paul Outlaw September 28th, 2008 at 7:55 am 33

    I think I will…pass.

  34. Jenna P September 29th, 2008 at 1:20 am 34

Tom Cruise looks stupid wearing that patch.

  35. elessar September 29th, 2008 at 10:18 am 35

Jenna: Well, would you prefer him with a glass eye or an empty socket then?

Seriously, people! The bashing of this movie is bordering on infantile! Tom’s wearing the eyepatch because his character lost an eye!

“I caught The Hurt Locker again last night. What a great film. Kathryn Bigelow is probably the most deserving of the nominees. I think if Cameron does pull off the upset, I don’t think sexism will be the problem. I think box office receipts and a concern with AMPAS trying to be “relevant” with the general public will be the actual result. Which brings me to this issue:

I do not understand why some critics out there think that the Academy should pick films that are more mainstream? I heard a commentator the other day saying that the 2008 (No Country for Old Men) ceremony was one of the most boring telecasts in the Academy’s history. Yes, it had their lowest ratings ever. But even if this makes me come off as snobbish, that explanation is a bunch of horseshit. 2007 was a great year in movies, and if LCD (lowest common denominator) critics and audiences don’t like it, tough.

Since I consider myself a film buff, it doesn’t bother me when the Academy pick films that general audiences may have a problem with. Let us be honest, your average film goer usually does not have the greatest taste in the world. And “difficult” films are usually more profound and original.

On a side note, I finally got around to seeing Julie & Julia this morning. Meryl Streep SHOULD NOT win the Oscar this year. That performance was ok, but not her greatest. Her performance in Doubt was a lot better. Mulligan and Sidibe should be the two actresses vying for the award, but that certainly is not the case. Honestly, I think I will be disappointed if Streep or Bullock win this year. Neither performance was that spectacular, in relation to the competition.”
