Maybe not as dreamlike and tantalizing as the teaser poster, but a beautiful Metropolis-under-glass terrarium all the same. Probably best that promotional teasers for Synecdoche, New York stay away from trying a literal explanation of the puzzle-box complexity of the film, but this poster works for me because it manages to convey the unlikely juxtapositions of familiar cityscapes. Urban organisms like New York are pretty friggen surreal in everyday experience, so it doesn’t take a huge leap of mental gymnastics to ramp that reality up to the next valence of mind-bending 4-D origami narrative structure.
(Handy trailer accessibility after the cut, for anyone who missed Sasha’s links last week)

I love this man – I mean Kaufman. And what a fantastic cast! Maybe a best actor nod for PSH? Yes, there is Doubt but it’s possible that Academy will like this one more. Catherine Keener, Chris Cooper, Meryl Streep, Nicolas Cage, Kate Winslet – all gave Oscar nominated performances. We’ll see
Another awe-inspiring piece of art attached to this movie. My excitement is through the roof, no doubt it will be amazing.
I was lucky enough to see this film at the Toronto International Film Festival. It truly is an ambitious work of originality and vision from the brilliant mind of Charlie Kaufman. I thought it was a fantastic film. As the credits rolled and audience got up to leave, many were shaking their heads and wondering what they just watched. I myself couldn’t stop thinking about it for days after. Many left confused but affected which proves that the film really makes you think which I love. I’ll be honest, I too did not understand some parts of the film and plan on seeing it again when it’s released in theatres. More than likely I will see something totally different and new after a second viewing. I agree with Richard Curliss of TIME magazine when he says that you have to “surrender to it’s spell” in order to truly appreciate and enjoy it.
I can’t wait! (this should be released in SA sometime around 2009…)
Nice to see a positive review, Jer Bear (especially since I’ve been trying to block out the negatice). I wish I could have seen this at a festival, that would have been great.
That is one of the most gorgeous posters I have ever seen!
Great poster. It suggests a “snow globe” without the snow. It’s pretty cool visually.
