New Benjamin Button trailer

Posted by Ryan Adams On September - 27 - 2008

Epic in the purest sense of the word. Apple HD trailers here.

I think now we’ve seen enough so that this qualifies as more than a guess: Best Cinematography nomination for Claudio Miranda, and I’m all in for another 7-8 nominations in categories across the board.

Oh I can’t even watch it.
    This project is just…

… leaving me in speechless anticipation.

    Oh that picture of Cate…

    … speechless appreciation.

I mean, c’mon. Forrest Gump can win Best Picture and yet there are lingering doubts that Benjamin Button isn’t a likely nominee?

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is Forrest Gump for people allergic to chocolate and corn.

  4. Friedl September 27th, 2008 at 1:54 am 4

    he he he.

I am allergic to Forrest Gump.

& Benjamin Button makes me very hungry..

(wait, that’s weird. I’m not sure what I mean..)

  5. Ryan Adams September 27th, 2008 at 2:00 am 5

[I always forget to mention that these nice screen shots are clickable to enlarge. If it's pretty, I want it big. (wait, that's weird. I'm not sure what I mean either... 8-) )]

  6. Daniel September 27th, 2008 at 2:09 am 6

Beautiful. I think you can throw Art Direction in with cinematography, Ryan.

  7. Friedl September 27th, 2008 at 4:18 am 7

    he he Ryan!

Remember I called Cate first… & I’m standing by Best Actress rather than Supp Actress (but I stand to be corrected, as I have yet to skim the screenplay, which I… found… somewhere…)

  8. DBibby September 27th, 2008 at 4:24 am 8

    Wow, Cate is stunning.

The trailer made me cry without showing much so I’m guessing I’ll be a blubbering mess seeing the actual movie.

Best of luck makeup contenders, you’re gonna need it.

  9. Paul Outlaw September 27th, 2008 at 6:34 am 9

Damn, if you ignore the braid she really looks like classic Julie Andrews in that screen shot.

  10. Pierre de Plume September 27th, 2008 at 6:55 am 10

    Intriguing.

  11. RRA is a Curious Case September 27th, 2008 at 8:18 am 11

All I know is, this probably will be the last time that David Fincher gets to be David Fincher with alot of money and time.

Lets do try to cherish it as long as we can.

  12. Free September 27th, 2008 at 8:35 am 12

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! My favorite actor just died!
    Paul Newman is gone!

  13. RRA Salutes Newman The Hustler September 27th, 2008 at 8:45 am 13

Yeah just heard that half-hour ago, Free.

From everything I’ve read about the guy, Newman was a decent human being, which I think is as important, if not more, than the fact that he was a great actor.

Eerie enough, TORN CURTAIN that Newman did with Julie Andrews under director Alfred Hitchcock, was on TCM last night.

I was skeptical about Benjamin Button when I first heard about it early this year. I liked the first trailer & now I’m convinced it’s a perennial Best Picture contender. Contender for: Picture, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Visual Effects, & a few acting.

  15. sonnymoscoso September 27th, 2008 at 10:13 am 15

Mr. Fincher… Mr. Fincher…. Please stand up to collect your statue…. thank you

  16. Al September 27th, 2008 at 10:14 am 16

Does anyone know if the music in the trailer was from the original score composed by Alexandre Desplat?

Loved it. It sounded exactly like his style (Girl w/Pearl Earring, Lust Caution, Painted Veil).

  17. VCB September 27th, 2008 at 11:42 am 17

this will be the “big fish” and “sweeney todd” of this year…

  18. Zed & No Noughts September 27th, 2008 at 3:49 pm 18

Looks mildly intriguing but after a teaser & two trailers there’s still no sense of story coming through much less the kind of emotional hook that all the best films have. The only thing that grabs you here are the visuals & the special effects. Very pretty. Give the cinematographer a nod but this is NOT going to win Best Picture. Not on the evidence so far.

  19. Daniel September 27th, 2008 at 5:04 pm 19

I still can’t figure out whether a Best Picture nom is a resonable assumption. On one hand, I see where VCB is coming from with the Big Fish/Sweeney Todd comment. On the other hand, it looks too spectacular to ignore, especially since it looks like there will be many awesome performances.

“Contender for: Picture, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Visual Effects, & a few acting.”

Why does no one mention Art Direction/Set Decoration? Looks like a no-brainer to me…

  20. Chris Price September 27th, 2008 at 5:19 pm 20

This is what you call a LOCK, people. Best Picture, Director, Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Art Direction, Costumes, Editing, Visual Effects and possibly a Blanchett nod for either supporting or lead. 10 nominations easy. Disagree? What other movie has even half a chance at 10 nominations this year?

  21. Alan of Montreal September 27th, 2008 at 5:40 pm 21

doesn’t cate look like Julie Andrews in her younger days in that photo?

  22. VCB September 27th, 2008 at 5:50 pm 22

this is is what people call a lock early on, but then the film fails to get nominated… dreamgirls, sweeny todd, big fish, frida, memoir of a geisha, phantom of the opera, cold mountain, etc… there’s one every year, and i’m afraid this year it’s “benjamin.” it’s what i like to call the “aesthetically beautiful syndrome.” on top of that, david fincher is not an academy favorite… like most of the movies mentioned, “benjamin” should be a lock in all the technical categories…

maybe in another lifetime, when we’re both cats..

  23. Keith Lucas September 27th, 2008 at 6:52 pm 23

I have faith in this project. I do not know if its a clear cut lock per se, but it looks good and I really enjoyed the short story. I just hope it captures the essence of the short story. If it completes that one (but critical) task, then I am confident it will get nominated for Best Picture.

WHOAH! This is….I’m just speechless. It’s too magical for words. I’d say we’re looking at a definite contender for the major categories.

I must take a little exception to the FORREST GUMP hate. That was the first Best Picture winner I ever saw (when I was 9 or so), and I still have a fondness for it. Hopefully, Benjamin can be just as successful as Forrest was.

“The Academy is composed of mostly older members making this movie a dark horse. The acting is top notch, the dialogue is intelligent, and the subject matter is timely. The weighted ballot system may just push this deserving movie to the top of the heap.

Reitman’s picture is the most consistent of the nominated films I have seen, with each scene adding to the whole. Reviews have stated that some of the firing scenes were unnecessary and detracted from the film. In an odd way, they provided relief from all the tense personal relationships in the film, so I believe that the many interviews were valid.

Up in the Air’s kind of ending, somber, isn’t what is keeping it from being a mainstream hit at this point. The content that deals with job loss is the biggest detractor above all else, even though the subject matter is handled with expertise. Movies with somber endings are dominating the award season. Up in the Air, Precious, Avatar, and The Hurt Locker have far from rosy endings.

I agree that it appeals to older adults because of its subject matter. Job loss, lack of commitment, and the feminist bent of the film add up to something many forum posters will not champion because it doesn’t appeal to their young sensibilities. However, youth does not rule the Academy.”
