Thanks to Australian reader, David M., for pointing us to two new Oz Tourism ads directed by Baz Luhrmann and featuring Brandon Walters, the 12-year-old kid costarring in Australia who Luhrmann says is destined to become the country’s next leading man.
“Our next leading man is about four-foot (1.2m) high, (with) long, sort of gold hair, and is an Aboriginal boy.”
Luhrmann says Brandon is the next Paul Hogan, but wouldn’t “the next Keisha Castle-Hughes” be a better comparison? The second tourism commercial, after the cut, seems to intentionally echo the romantic longing of a Wong Kar-wai relationship.

Lovely stuff. I feel the need for a walkabout myself now. I’m a sucker for Luhrmann.
There’s something very Peter Pan-ish about that kid, isn’t there?
Wow, very stylish looking ads by Baz. He sure know how to make ads!!
God, I love Baz.
I can’t even handle the wait for Australia.
I can’t even handle it.
“Luhrmann says Brandon is the next Paul Hogan, but wouldn’t “the next Keisha Castle-Hughes” be a better comparison?”
Except Paul Hogan is Australian, and Keisha Castle-Hughes isn’t.
“Keisha Castle-Hughes was born in Donnybrook, Western Australia. Her mother, Desrae Hughes, is New Zealand Maori and her father, Tim Castle, Australian. At age of four, Keisha’s family moved from Australia to New Zealand.”
Was trying to help the kid out, Leisa, because I’d rather be compared to Keisha Castle-Hughes than to Paul Hogan, for a number of reasons.
Well said, Ryan. I fold.
I think he said “Paul Hogan” because he got a start in tourism Australia ads…but then, Brandon was in Baz’s film before the ads…. Maybe he meant these ads would make him famous… Cryptic!!
