To Clint or Not to Clint

Since Cannes began, many have wondered whether friendships will play a part in the decision-making, the same way they wondered when Brad Pitt won Best Actor in Venice for Jesse James when Alejandro González Iñárritu was on the jury that year (Babel director).  To that end, Penn told the AP:

Having Eastwood in competition puts Sean Penn, head of the Cannes jury, in the odd position of judging the work of a man who shepherded him to an Oscar. Penn won the best-actor prize for Eastwood’s “Mystic River.”

As Cannes opened May 14, Penn said it was “an emotional impossibility, I believe, for any of us to give in to something as petty as to favor a film because a friend of ours is in it. I also want to make it clear that this person will not be biased against. And that if Clint Eastwood’s done a film that deserves awarding, we’re going to … award it.”

“Mystic River” and three previous Eastwood films — “Pale Rider,” “Bird” and “White Hunter, Black Heart” — all played in competition at Cannes. While “Bird” won the lead-actor prize and a technical award at Cannes, Eastwood has never received the festival’s top award.

It does seem that the Penn/Eastwood thing would work more against the film than for it.  Penn would never want to be perceived as someone who would give an award to a film because of a good friendship.  Both Eastwood and Steven Soderbergh are going to enter this year’s race as directors who have a lot of friends, a lot of actor friends specifically.  Either way, the Palme is notoriously difficult to predict.

    Cannes partianship isn’t anything new.

    Look at 2004, when Tarantino, himself a longtime Weinstein Bros.’ “company boy,” was on the Cannes jury, and FAHRENHEIT 9/11 won the Grand Prize….which was a Weinstein Bros. production.

    now that we know the outcome of the voting I guess the discussion about the Penn-Eastwood connection is either moot, or will drift in the direction of ‘he didn’t want to appear biased…” But in terms of Penn being favorable to Eastwood because he shepherded him to Oscar victory, well he didn’t. Eastwood is a fine director and produced a damned fine film. Penn is a fine actor and acted up a storm. Penn was due, he turned in a powerhouse performance, and he won. But Eastwood didn’t direct him to the Oscar as say Soderburgh did for Julia Roberts.

    “The first time I saw The Hurt Locker, I had forgotten who the director was. As the film unfolded I kept saying to myself, “Wow, whoever directed this really has a unique intellect and highly focused directorial vision.” I knew that this film was different, that it had a depth not usually seen in a film set during wartime — but I didn’t know exactly how or why I was experiencing this reaction. When the end credits rolled, my “aha!” moment arrived. “So it’s a woman!” I thought, “It all makes sense to me now.”

    Yet, I believe that Bigelow won the DGA — and quite possibly will win the Oscar — not because she’s female but because she did excellent work. Some voters may choose her to make some kind of political or feminist statement, but Bigelow’s name wouldn’t be on that ballot unless she deserved to be there.

    Some claim that the dearth of awards recognition for female directors is because there are so few good female directors. To me, a statement like that ignores the fact that bias has prevented more women from getting good material to direct.”
