No Response for "Brand New Australia Trailer"
Hi!
Can anybody tell me why isn´t Australia being considered as a Frontrunner in virtually every Main category???
It looks just amazing!
Also, it’s because it has yet to be seen by anyone. It does look pretty awesome. I’ll see it when it comes out, that’s for sure.
Fernando & Michelle,
The explanation (for anyone who missed the other 605 times it’s been explained this year): A movie doesn’t earn a spot on the sidebar based on trailers and speculation. The entire film must be seen in a theater before it qualifies for sidebar status.
[edit: yeah, what Matthew said. Except I might have an issue with the "also"
Trust me, if bias were a factor I'd be lobbying against the inclusion of the W. nominations. I think Josh Brolin's best shot at a nom is for Milk, and he's not in the Cate Blanchett, Jamie Foxx, Julianne Moore league of simultaneous double-nominees -- yet.]
[On that note, based on feedback from our eyes in the field, I do think Slumdog Millionaire has earned consideration for its cinematography by Anthony Dod Mantle and its editing by Chris Dickens. As important precursors for Best Picture those are two Guild nomination candidates with lots of promise.]
OK, I get that you can evaluate a movie just for the trailer (remember The Golden Age!!!!), but if this is case, the only movies being considered at this point should be Slumdog and Dark Night…
In any case, I hope that lack high hopes eventually lifts the movie over ther rest of contenders (as it was the case with AA nominee Moulin Rouge!)
Sasha, great site by the way!!!
This movie looks it might be horrible. That is all.
No one has seen Australia. Generally speaking, this isn’t supposed to be a “wishful thinking” site that pushes anyone. We cross that line again and again but we continue to strive not to do so. I’m going to remove Thandie Newton’s name because I’m sick of hearing it from all of you, truly. I like to make my own decisions, though, and every so often I am wrong. Most of the time, though, this site tends to be more right than it is wrong.
I am just not drawn to this film. Everything about it should make me want to see it, but the desire isn’t there.
Australia at this point has a lot going for it: Two stars who appear to have onscreen chemistry, a great look, epic scale, and Baz Luhrmann. Will this add up to an effective whole? Time will tell. But I’m guessing the film will be a contender in craft categories (e.g., cinematography) and will attract a respectable audience. It might even do better than that.
Rob Y. …I agree. It does not excite me in the least.
Harry…that was awesome. i’m almost in tears. there’s someone on this site that i argree with on something. it is truly a glorious day !!!!!
It looks like a bad Out of Africa and very pompous (is that the word?).
Also Kidman have no expression because of the botox.
Trailer looks good. It looks like tons of money (and effort) was spent on this movie. On paper everything looks great but somehow i have a feeling that it will bomb at the box office. So far, i have seen the trailer a couple of times in a movie theatre. It didnt seem to create much excitement. For example, when Milk’s or Doubt’s trailers appeared on the screen people stopped talking or made some comments. But Australia’s trailer didnt create such a response. I am not sure i just have a feeling that it will not live up to the expectations (at least in terms of box office)
And unfortunately i have to agree with Alfredo. Nothing moves on Nicole Kidman’s face. too sad….
That trailer was awful. Still can’t wait for the movie though.
I just don’t understand all that bitching about Kidman’s face… Anybody seen her in Margot at the Wedding? Or you doesn’t bother yourselfs and read only Perez hilton?
The video looks terrific, I hope the movie will be success.
“…if this is case, the only movies being considered at this point should be Slumdog and Dark Night…”
I’m not following you, Fernando.
The Visitor, Frozen River, Burn After Reading, WALL-E, Happy-Go-Lucky, Rachel Getting Married — many of us have seen all these. The Wrestler, Che, and others have been seen at festivals and evaluated by people we trust. Likewise all the foreign language and documentary films have been seen by thousands and thousands of people in theaters.
For the record, I’ve never made any direct criticism of Thandie Newton, and made it clear lots of times that I’m no authority because I haven’t seen W. (on high-fallutin principle). I think I quoted one outside source once, several weeks ago who had a negative reaction.
Alfredo…do you think nicole can even cry ???
I agree with the notion that movie should excite me but it doesn’t. To be honest, big, sweeping romantic movies are not my cup of tea, mostly because you can only do that genre so many times before it gets extremely cliched and predictable. I’ll be interested to see if it turns out good, but it does look like a cross between The African Queen and Out of Africa, and neither of those excited me either.
I’m still not feeling this thing. Maybe it’s my inability to get excited about anything with Hugh Jackman in it.
I saw Margot at the Wedding and in the final sequence there’s a part when she started to “cry” and she was able only to move her lips a little bit and the whole moment was lost.
Let’s put it this way, now she wouldn’t be able to play Virginia Woolf.
I don’t see what people see in it other than the war segments. And I love Luhrmann.
The more I think about this movie the more pretentious the mere idea of it seems. Imagine if say Clint Eastwood decided to make a period drama starring Brad Pitt and Reese Witherspoon, set it during the Spanish American War, added a dash of some magical Native American characters and called the movie “America.” For all I know that may actually sound like a decent movie to some people, but to me it seems like an overly romanticized and simplified portrayal of a country and its people.
The weird thing about the trailers for this movie is that every time I see one, it seems like a completely different movie. This one made me at least want to see it. Baz Luhrmann should never be underestimated folks. Let’s hope he doesn’t disappoint.
The trailer was okay, nothing horribly special. I still want to see it but for Jackman and Baz (mostly Baz).
Almost every time I saw Kidman’s face I cracked up, especially during the first 30 or so seconds when she’s waking around the dock holding a parasol (”G’day, love!” “WEH!?”).
Some of this trailer suffers from a serious lack of quality editing. Oh well, I still kind of want to see it. Something about it has sort of an Atonement vibe for me.
“an Atonement vibe…”???
Seriously? Too wierd.
Stop bitching.
She isn’t my favourite actor, and I certainly don’t think she is perfect but, here goes. . .
Nicole Kidman is indisputably one of the strongest, most interesting actresses working in major motion pictures, who over the past decade has created a body of work of such range and vitality to rank along side any of the truly great actors, past or present; Have a bit of fucking respect.
Can we stop the mindless catty gossip about someones forehead.
Now I’ve got that out of my system . . . I think the film looks good.
I understand the wariness in endorsing it as a bona fide contender: it certainly has more than a hint of the ‘memoirs of a geisha/dreamgirls/Flags of my fathers/Elizabeth:the golden age/Atonement’ air about it, but despite all the possible mawkishness and scope for cringe-worthy failure, it could so easily be very good, and moreover, very successful.
It also appears to have escaped from one of the biggest fatal flaws in all the films mentioned above, in having very low expectations prior to its release.
“‘an Atonement vibe…”???
Seriously? Too wierd.’”
Friedl, I’m not really sure why. Something about it just screams Atonement to me =S.
This looks like “Gone with the Aussie Wind”. This is a much better trailer than the teaser that came before it, though. I would say that it probably has a slew of production nominations coming it’s way, and possibly a directing nod because it does look like such a big film. But like most of Baz Luhrman’s films, it looks like it’s more about style than substance.
alfredo, your margot memories made me laugh…
and s.t. stevens thanks for the words !!
There has been a number of test screenings for Australia. The feedback has been favorable so far. I for one has seen this film and I’m excited about its awards prospects. Have a look at some of the clips from the Australian Bigpond sites. A couple of them showcase Nicole’s performances and they look really great.
watching the trailer a couple of times im thinking pearl harbor crossed with dances with wolves and i dont know why lol. but i highly doubt this will get a best pic nomination, unless Jackman or Kidman dies in the film.
This looks unbelievably cheesy and mawkish. I hope the movie is better than the trailer indicates. It looks like it should have been made in the fifties with Deborah Kerr and Robert Taylor.
read this weekend that Luhrman doesn’t have a movie yet. it’s in piles of bits and pieces around an editing room. no one has seen it. i just hope it lives up to its epic promise and that Baz doesn’t inject his typical brand of weirdness that ruined everything else he’s made (no, i’m not a fan, but you can always hope a filmmaker will come up with something remarkable). to be honest, we’ve seen a vast, excellent, romantic, lush Australian epic before. it was called THE THORNBIRDS.
seriously despite of that much botox, she looks great. probably she’s much better than all of you.
Well, this trailer wasn’t as good as the other one, but it will still be a very good movie!
I can’t wait to see it!
“It looks like it should have been made in the fifties with Deborah Kerr and Robert Taylor.”
I think that’s exactly the point. The stylised visuals, the heightened tone of the performances … we’re clearly dealing with Old Hollywood pastiche here. While that may put you off, I find it quite exciting.
If anything, this has definitely got production noms in the bag. Definitely will be a fine looking film. Whether it will have the heart that it needs to be a great film is debatable. Kidman used to have some great performances in her but for some reason she’s been decidely average in her last few films – her last good film being Birth.
This film looks so BLAH I will consider it…..
… for the Razzies
T.
To me, it looks big, lush, Epic, and beautiful.
Do I think it will get acting nods? Nah, probably not. Do I think it will get a screenplay nod? Ha, probably not. But I friggin’ love those big, lengthy, sweeping, beautiful Epics of old.
And I just hope the acting/script/story is ‘decent enough’ to match-up to what looks like some stunning imagery.
I personally can’t wait.
Oh my gush! I want a full-size poster of this movie sooo bad on my wall, I would even replace Vanessa Hudgens for it…
Just kidding…movie looks old-fashioned in an uncomfortable way- smells like kitsch sprit.
We can only wait and see. I predict some critics will love the film and some will think it is pretentious smaltz . When all the critical response is said and done, I believe it will rate a fresh tomato on rotten tomatoes. Above 60% favorable. I don’t think this film will hit the $100 million mark in North America but will be a huge hit elsewhere. I also see it earning at least 6 Oscar nods and maybe a couple wins.
“Gone with the Aussie Wind”
No matter what one thinks of the trailer, this is really funny. Thanks, Alan.
I’m going to have to agree with my doppelganger, Alfredo – I’m just not feeling the trailer or the movie but who knows I might completely wrong. I mean I did like Romeo & Juliet and Moulin Rouge! I’m afraid that something has gone terribly wrong with Nicole’s face. I’m not going to say she’s had botox because I don’t know her personally but her face does seem a lil more plastic looking.
Viva le Dark Knight!
Pretty much nothing anyone can say could deter me from going to see this movie opening weekend. Baz Luhrman is fantastic. Nicole Kidman is fantastic. And the two of them together…Gold!
As for the Botox… I’m tired of people trying to find things wrong with successful people and then feasting on what seems to be and not what is.
I hope this movie sits somewhere around 70% on Rotten Tomatoes… It’s always good when there are Haters for a movie… means its sparked some sort of emotion in them at least.. and, after all, I think that’s the point.
“Nicole Kidman is indisputably one of the strongest, most interesting actresses working in major motion pictures, who over the past decade has created a body of work of such range and vitality to rank along side any of the truly great actors, past or present; Have a bit of fucking respect.”
I’m sorry Euan, but a matter of opinion can not be indisputable. There are quite a few of us who have never appreciated Kidmans acting, and in my opinion anyone who has produced so many films along the lines of The Invasion, Bewitched, The Stepford Wives and The Birthday Girl in one decade has no place being put anywhere near the greats.
As far as Australia is concerned, I do not like the look of it at all, but I am biased, being Australian for some reason the idea of this film has always really frustrated me.
I imagine this movie would be getting unimous positive responses if it were dark and masculine. Is it coincidental that the most female-oriented BP nominee this year were “Atonement” and “Juno” and that they were the most ripped apart from bitchy blog commenters.
Hmmm. And, really, if we’re really going to discuss Nicole Kidman’s missteps as “one of the greats” despite being in a lot of bad films then are we going to do that for the likes of Phillip Seymour Hoffman or Johnny Depp (for examples)? Of course not. :/
I am Australian too and I can’t wait to see it. Hopefully it will be awesome and garner many awards but most importantly make a profit.
I can’t understand why you would be biased against the film because you are from Australia???
I have always been proud of Nicole and her acting skills and in all her interviews she seems very grounded.
I agree, Glenn. This is how the double standard for men and women operates these days.
And, by the way, I think this movie looks fantastic. I don’t understand why all of you are not at least interested in seeing it—it clearly has a lot of potential to be a good movie.
Kezza, unless you are Australian you can’t proper level of “tall poppy syndrome” and “cultural cringe” that people here have. Once people get too big for this country they go overseas and then the Austalian media CUTS them down because “oh, they’re too good for us now”, which – in relation to “Australia” – is quite silly considering it’s a whole lot of Aussies coming back to make this movie. Silly people.
But the term “cultural cringe” is synonymous with Australia. We don’t like being mocked by foreigners. We have no sense of humour about it. Meryl Streep’s “Cry in the Dark” performance is routinely mocked here and the idea that this film is going to be perceived as a negative against Australians as people is something that a lot of people will be thinking.
But I’ve heard far more Australians talk about their desire to see this film than a desire not too. Well, outside of blog comment sections that is, but the comment sections on blogs aren’t real and the thoughts people express on them are routinely hyperbolic and nothing more than a load of big words to make themselves feel big.
When the movie opens you’ll find a lot of people talking bad about it will indeed go and see it because they can’t bare be left out of a conversation. That or they’ll just pretend they saw it, which happens far too often.
“Kezza, unless you are Australian you can’t proper level of “tall poppy syndrome” and “cultural cringe” that people here have. Once people get too big for this country they go overseas and then the Austalian media CUTS them down because “oh, they’re too good for us now”,
Huh? Glenn, what Australian media are you taling about? The Australian media is obsessed with glorifying any Australian who has the slightest bit of success internationally. The people they cut down are the people who ‘mess’ with our celebrities, like how Tom Cruise used to be one of the tabloid favourites, but the moment he and Nicole got divorced he became a standing joke in the Australian media (long before the rest of the world started in on him) Nicole and Kylie Minogue in particular are literally treated like royalty.
This latest trailer is by far the best! I loved the music theme they used and the hole feeling that the trailer left to me after watching it. ‘Australia’ will definetely earn many Oscar nominations, it seems to be such a classic! Hopefully, Hugh Jackman will at last be nominated for an Oscar too, he’s such a great, talented actor. Cross fingers, this will be an amazing, breathtaking, epic movie. CAN’T WAIT FOR IT!!
Glenn I AM Australian as I said in my post born and bred – everyone I know here in Australia which includes the media have high hopes for this film. I can’t wait to see it I think it looks great and to see my country Australia on the world stage has me feeling so proud.
I agree with Walt G the media loves a successful Aussie – Kylie, Nicole, Cate etc are treated with the utmost respect. Even Big Russ.
Yep Tom Cruise better not show his mangy head in Australia anytime soon he is hated here for what he did to ‘our Nicole.’
“if we’re really going to discuss Nicole Kidman’s missteps as ‘one of the greats’ despite being in a lot of bad films then are we going to do that for the likes of Phillip Seymour Hoffman or Johnny Depp (for examples)? Of course not.”
You’re right, Glenn, we’re not. Because even when Hoffman and Depp are in bad films, they almost always give very good performances. Kidman does not. They are plenty of women who have been in bad movies but who still give consistantly good performances, such as Meryl Streep (Devil Wears Prada, Lions for Lambs) who is still considered “one of the greats.”
So let’s stop purposely looking for places to cry sexism and stop it with all this “double standard” BS.
does anyone know what the music is in the first half of trailer G, if anyone has seen that one?
i love it!
why all this Nicole hate? you idiots! Nicole is one of the few actresses left in Hollywood who can actually “Act”. This stupid botox comment has no foundation. Did you see Margot at the wedding? or all have recent indie movies? HATERS!!
wtf. you people are liars. most of you are going to be at the theatre opening weekend, sitting in your seats, excited. most of you loved the trailer. cut the b.s.
and i’ll bet Nicole looks a hell of a lot better than anyone here looks IRL (myself included).
